Pretty as a picture- Photography done my way

The Magic of a Picture

What makes a good photograph? Is there such a thing as a bad picture? Can everyone take nice pictures? Does the camera really matter, or is it mostly the photographer that counts? These are just a few of the questions I get when I am telling people about photography.

My answers to these questions are as follows:

  • I dont know what makes a good photograph, I suppose the way that the photo appeals to others on some other level.
  • I don't know if there is such a thing as a bad photograph. What is horrible to me, may be stunning to another persons eyes. Sometimes -Some pictures, are not suppose tp have heads included, and that is what makes them what they are and liked. It all depends on who is looking at the picture and what they see when they look at it.
  • Yes, everyone can take a nice picture. Even if you do not have any talent, any skill, any anything having to do with photography, you are bound to get one good picture every so often.
  • The camera matters, but that doesnt mean that some wonderful pictures can not be taken with a cell phone. Just because you do not have a $2,000 camera, does not mean you shouldn't take a picture if you see one you want to capture.

As a photographer, I do not just look at the subject I am photographing as whether or not a picture is going to be great, or something I am proud of. I mostly look at the light, and how light bends around objects, creating shadows and highlights. I look at the colors around me, and how they are drawn out or taken in by light, and then I look at focus. Where should I focus to gain the full effect of the scene I am trying to capture. Once this is all done, even I sometimes make mistakes and think later, I wish I wouldnt have made that adjustment, changed that lens or focused there.

The good news for all is, mess ups can be worked up with Photoshop. Photoshop has saved my butt (given me a butt), in many of situations, when a picture didn't turn out exactly as I would have hoped.

The video above is a collection of my photographs that have been taken through the layers of Photoshop to become better than they were. I love Photoshop, and the ability to edit photographs, but I do realize that not everyone has the same availability to the program that I have.

If you are not a Photoshop pro or do not have the program, do not fear. There is help out there for you as well. A friend of mine is the owner and talent behind an innovative way to save your photographs. Check her FotoFix service out, first fix is free...and you will look like a master photographer, with no one being any wiser to your secret.

I envy those with the photographers eye. You certainly have it. Educational and beautiful at the same time.

Sandra, thanks for the comment. I love being in the darkroom, and I also love all the options that Photoshop provides as to how you can stretch the possibilities of a photo... But there have been a few times (specially during wedding season), where I have gotten so backed up do to editing my photos, that it takes me a good 4-5 months to catch up. I really like Jessica at Photofix, because she pays special attention to my individual style of photography and after a few times of using them, I no longer had to explain what to do with each and every photo i sent through. Of course, I would rather do the editing myself, and I do with all my portfolio pieces, but for mass projects like a wedding- Id rather save my sanity and call Jessica :)

mckbirdbks, thank you for the compliment. It kind of runs in the family. My grandfather, father, sister and brother are all photographers...My dad kept a darkroom when i was growing up, so I have always had a love for photographs...even though it did take awhile to get the eye developed for it...

Hi, I came back today, and your video was fine. It was lovely, by the way. You did a beautiful job. I was just stuck by the people in the video and wanted to know about them, especially the beautiful child. I voted this UP, etc.etc.

Love your video. My passion is black and white photography in which I am creating a hub about it as we speak. You are right, there is no bad picture. It is all in the eye of the beholder and how you interpret your work. I thoroughly enjoyed it! Lisa voted up!

Nice video. I am focusing on your statement that when you take a picture, you don't just look at the subject. You also look at light, color, and focus. I am going to the Grand Canyon and Sedona in 2 weeks. I don't have an expensive camera, but will concentrate on light, color and focus. Who knows, maybe the pictures will turn out well and you may see them in a future Hub.

Tell my wife that there are no bad pictures, she hates most of mine.

Voted up, useful and shared.

Thank you Kellyward... so glad you could come by and comment. Photography has its technical side for sure- but it is mostly about the person taking the pictures, classes or no classes- a love for photography and skill for it, have zip to do with a class :)

Rusticliving, thanks for the comment and for looking at my pictures... Everyone has a different taste-and style, there is someone out there that will like a picture you hate and hate a picture you is what makes art so wonderful. :)

HC, I loved your video and the photos that you showed. I like what you said about it being about light and how the light wraps around the subjects. Interesting!

I do not have Photoshop yet, but have been able to find some free programs online that allow me to play with photos. It is a lot of fun! Thanks for the hub. Voted up and more.

prairieprincess- Thank you once more for commenting on my work. Photoshop has saved many photos for me over the past 13 years.. it is a great tool. Although I do use some other free tools, nothing compares to the magic photoshop provides :)
