Priyanka Chopra : From Bollywood to Hollywood

After enjoying a large amount of critical acclaim for her roles in a number of successful Indian films and becoming one of the highest-paid actresses in Bollywood, Priyanka Chopra is making a transition to Hollywood.

To Bollywood and Indian cinema fans, Her biggest roles that you likely know her from include her role as Jiya in the 2003 Bollywood film “Andaaz.” The role won Chopra the prestigious Filmfare Best Female Debut Award, bringing her critical recognition early on in her career.

For her role in “Andaaz,” which was one of the highest-grossing films at the 2003 Bollywood Box Office, Chopra was also nominated for the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award.

In 2004, Chopra gained a warm critical reception for her role in the thriller film “Aitraaz,” in which she played Sonia Roy. Her role as a seductress, which was not unlike the role she played in “Andaaz,” won her the Filmfare Award for Best Performance in a Negative Role.

Chopra’s leading roles in the highly acclaimed films “Don” and “Krrish,” both released in 2006, further compounded her success as a Bollywood actress.

In some of her more recent film projects, Chopra played unconventional characters, such as her role as a serial killer in the 2011 film “7 Khoon Maaf” and her role as an autistic woman in the 2012 film “Barfi!” She won several awards for both films.

Following her huge success in Bollywood, Chopra began her attempts to break into Hollywood with her 2012 debut into the music industry.

Chopra’s transition from film to music is not all that surprising. The actress has been a songwriter for a large part of her life, and even utilized her musical talents for various Bollywood films in the past, including her recording of “Ullathai Killadhe” for the 2002 film “Thamizhan.”

In July of last year, Chopra was signed by Los Angeles-based CAA (or Creative Artists Agency,) a move that officially commemorated the beginning of her transition from Bollywood to Hollywood. Her first single, “In My City,” which featured Of The Black Eyed Peas, was subsequently released in September of last year.

The song received tons of commercial success in India, with over 100,000 copies sold in the week following its release, and earned Chopra the Best International Debut Award at the 2012 People’s Choice Awards India. Although it did not receive much attention in the United States, Chopra is continuing her endeavors in the music industry.

This past April, Chopra Spent time in South Beach Miami filming the music video for her new single “Exotic,” which features American rapper Pitbull. The song and the accompanying video was released on July 9, It is a very catchy song and debuted at #1 on Itunes India, #16 on the Billboard Dance chart, and was #74 on Canadas Hot 100 chart.

Look for her next single later this summer.

In addition to breaking into the music scene as a way of breaking into Hollywood, Chopra has accepted a rather surprising role that departs from her normal roles in the film industry.

Chopra will provide the voice for the character Ishani, in the upcoming 3D animated Disney film "Planes", a Spin-off from Cars & Cars 2, Which will be released in U.S. theaters in August of this year and in India later this month. This will be Chopra’s first role in an animated film.

Recently, it was revealed that she was under consideration for the role of X-man (or X-girl, X-woman, okay, X-men Member) Psylocke in this summers The Wolverine Starring Hugh Jackman but her character was eliminated during a re-write. There have also been rumors she may be Lara Croft Tomb Raider, a Bond Girl in a future James Bond Film. Some have even suggested she could be Wonder Woman, (UPDATE: this was not to be as Gal Gadot was cast as WW) if Warner Brothers and DC Films ever get that film off the ground I think she just may be good in the part! Lets just hope Hollywood sees her for not more than just another exotic pretty face. As someone who has seen her previous work, She does have the talent to go far if given the chance!

She is currently starring in the ABC US Television series Quantico that is already getting a lot of news in the press.

UPDATE: February 2016, It was announced this week that Priyanka has been cast as the Villain in the upcoming Big Screen reboot of the 90s tv series Baywatch going up against Dwayne The Rock Johnson and Zac Efron. .

Whatever the outcome of Priyanka Chopra’s Hollywood debut, her endeavors in the American entertainment industry will be sure to provide her fans with something interesting to follow.

Not bad for someone who first gained fame as the winner of Miss World 2000.
