Puppet Movies, Muppet Movies, & Animatronic Movies!! Oh My! The Best & Worst!!

Updated on September 14, 2010

The Neverending Story is about a sensitive little boy, still grieving for his mother, finds respite in a book which chronicles the plight of Fantasia, a magical land created by the dreams and imagination of humankind, now threatened with destruction by The Nothing, a shapeless, ominous force created by human despair.

One of the first Large animatronic characters I can remember was Falcor the giant flying dog dragon thing. With incredible creatures and characters The Neverending story makes any 80's child look back and reminisce. Great family film that you can watch with any age group and not have to worry about turning their heads away from nudity or gore. A movie that will work imaginations. Got to love that!

GREMLINS, When Billy Peltzer is given a small creature called a Mogwai by his father, he is unaware of the carnage he is about to encounter. There is a huge responsibility in looking after Gizmo as there are certain rules which must be followed. The Mogwai must be kept away from bright light, never made wet and never, ever be fed after midnight. When an accident occurs involving Gizmo and water, the next evolution stage of the Mogwai appears, and it isn't nice at all.

One of my favorite films of all time, this movie not only gave us cult classic creatures but also arguably the cutest creature ever made!! Gizmo! Granted this movie might spook out some of the younger viewers, I still think everybody in their lifetime must see it at least once! Or twice!
The effects team really knew what they were doing with Gizmo and the monsters. But it's just not the horror theme, these imps have personality, and I found myself cheering them on--Stripe especially! The bit with Snow White was classic, and the microwave scene is one of the grossest and funniest moments in movie history. But it's also a good way to show that good and family love can persevere over evil, and that's what makes it a gem!

In Labyrinth , teenage Sarah is left to babysit her baby brother Toby and he will not stop crying. So Sarah tries to put the baby to sleep by reading him a story. When she accidentally conjures up the Goblin King from the fantasy, he steals the baby and takes him to his castle, which is in the middle of a labyrinth. Now Sarah must solve the labyrinth by midnight, or Toby will be turned into a goblin.

This movie I hold in the highest ranking for muppet movies. With muppets of all shapes and sizes and David Bowie playing the Goblin King you really cant go wrong. All around this is just an absolutely fun movie! The muppets make it goofy in a real fun way, as you are taken into a labyrinth of mayhem and madness. The costuming, scenery, and soundtrack make this a keeper alone but the muppets make it a Classic!

The Dark Crystal is a story about the last of the Gelfings, Jen and Kira who join forces and embark on a dangerous journey to "heal" a precious Dark Crystal and restore order to their planet. However they do run into quite a bit of friction during their long travel.

Probably one of the most visually creative films I have ever seen, this was before CGI(computer generated). What impressed me about this movie is that there are no people characters in this film at all. As a child watching this movie though I must admit it scared me more than I enjoyed it but as an adult I can appreciate how creative it is. This being a huge cult classic film is the reason for me going back to it and giving it another chance and I am happy I did.

Return of the Jedi is about Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Lando Calrissian and their small army of friends rescue Han Solo from the clutches of the menacingly ugly Jabba the Hutt and go on to do battle with the Empire, even after Darth Vader has broken off in his own rebellion.

This is one of the best Star Wars out of the films. The movie is filled with adventure with different characters from the good to the bad like the Emperor and Darth Vader himself. What makes this movie a part of the best puppets and animatronics movies however is Jabba the Hutt, The ewoks, and all of the little minions on Tatooine! We already know this movie is a classic because it belongs to the original Star Was trilogy bu also a superb movie for anyone with a respect for old school puppeteering

Little Shop of Horrors is a  dark but goofy and thoroughly fun musical, shy Seymour and bubbly Audrey don't recognize the romance blooming between them, but they do recognize the money-making potential of Seymour's weird plant, discovered after a total eclipse of the sun. Soon money pours in and Seymour becomes a minor celebrity, but behind the glamour and fame lies a secret Seymour can't reveal: this strange and unusual plant's favorite food is blood. As the plant grows taller and taller, its demands for food grow as well, and Seymour starts to suspect that the plant might have an agenda of its own.

This movie has such good acting and music accompanying an idealistic march toward the American dream that people forget to appreciate the true animatronic wonder that Audrey II the plant was for its time. Going from a small sweet little plant to a giant man eating monster these creators made sure this plant had all the personality of any of its fellow cast mates.

Ripley (Sigourney Weaver), the sole survivor from the original ALIEN, is awakened after 57 years of drifting through space, her stories disbelieved by Company executives who tell her that the alien's planet is now inhabited and colonized. When contact is suddenly lost with the colonists, Ripley returns to the planet with a squad of marines and a Company executive with a mission of his own. Once on the planet, no survivors can be found except for Newt, a little girl who awakens motherly instincts in Ripley just in time for the acid-blooded aliens to attack in what quickly becomes a one-sided battle for sheer survival.

Let’s face it. Most aliens are hell bent on jamming their ovipositors down your esophagus and laying eggs in your intestines. It’s not a lot of fun. But meeting their mama is even worse. She’ll eat your face whether you like it or not! The soldier aliens and the face huggers were amazing creations all by themselves but when the Queen Alien was unveiled you really needed to take a step back and appreciate the sheer size and horrific realism of this creature which was created from rubber and metal. The Jurassic Park Dinasours should be thanking the Queen for paving they way for them!

The contemporary story of a remarkable theme park built around actual dinosaurs, created from DNA deposits. But when people are brought in for the first time to test out the park and view all its prehistoric creatures the humans lose control and nature takes over!

Jurassic Park was an amazing film, the story-line was outstanding, I cant stress how incredible it is to watch. The visual and electronic work is extremely beautiful when it comes to the dinosaur aspect of the film, it wasn't tacky or cheap like a lot of the stuff out there. It was the very first dinasour film where you truly believed you were looking at living creatures and not a guy in a costume.

Fresh out of drama school, Kermit Fozzie Bear and the entier cast of Kermit's musical "Manhattan Melodies" head for the Big Apple with plans to turn their small play into a big hit! But when no one in town will even meet with them, it's up to Kermit to believe hard enough for all of his friends that the show will go on!

"Muppets Take Manhattan" shines when it comes to the beauty of Jim Henson's magical mind. If u see this film,u will see a lot of Muppet-style heart and soul. Whether it be seeing the Sesame Street Muppets at Kermit + Piggy's wedding,or the rats blowing Kermit's cover at that caricature resturaunt by emerging from under the table to get a bite of the food, there will be something to smile at. 1 of the most interesting things about this movie has to be that this was where the "Muppet Babies" made their grand debut to the world before their cartoon came out.

I cant mention the BEST without also bringing up a few of the WORST!!!

THE WORST

In Critters Furry fuzzballs are unleashed from their home in space, and hightail down to Earth where the terror begins. They land near a deserted home where a family lives and sink their sharp teeth into their enemies.

This is a far cry from Gremlins. It's not meant to be very good- you can tell that just by watching the movie trailer, but it's still frustrating to watch, because it's actually a pretty interesting plot that's not justified by the bad acting and special effects.

Howard, a duck the size of a human man, is accidentally brought to Earth through a laser beam in an experiment being performed by a Cleveland physicist Dr. Walter Jenning, and his assistant Phil Blumburtt. Howard ends up in Cleveland, where he rescues singer Beverly Switzer from a group of thugs. Beverly and Phil are friends, and when the government is told about Howard, she helps Phil and Dr. Jenning hide Howard from the authorities until they can get him back home -- but then an evil being arrives through the laser beam and takes possession of Dr. Jenning's body, putting Howard, Beverly, and Phil in a fight for their lives.

Classic 80's movie. Big hair, smart talking kids or aliens. A catchy theme song (Howard the Duck). You are looking this movie up because you are either a child of the 80's and you actually liked this movie?? or you were researching Tim Robbins career or Lea Thompson or even George Lucas. Yes, Lucasfilm has something to do with this crap. OR..you are just looking it up because you heard it was the WORSE MOVIE EVER. Yes..it is the worse movie ever. You probably will like it if you are 12 years old and under or if you are a child of the 80's but other then that it is a big waste of time.

A young man and his girlfriend move into thre man's old mansion home, where he becomes possessed by a need to control ancient demons.

This was a huge disappointment, I thought puppets were cheesy and the acting was laughable. Gremlins is the first horror movie about little a horde of evil little creatures and it remains the only one of that type that's worth watching. (Sorry, I take that back; Gremlins 2 is also worthy). All these Gremlins clones: Ghoulies, Critters, Munchies, Elves, etc. aren't worth your money or time.

??????????????????????????
