Movie Review: Puss In Boots 3D (2011)

If you are a fan of the Shrek animated movies, this new addition to the movie line does not disappoint. Puss in Boots is a minor character in the Shrek movies but finally has a movie that is all about him and Dreamworks did a great job of creating a story line that is full of adventure, humor, and of course, redemption.

The production value of this movie, like the rest of the Shrek line, is very well done, just a notch below Disney, but still wonderful. Seeing the movie in 3D is virtual eye candy. What was unexpected in this animation is the Puss in Boots storyline, the writers have moved away from the traditional Puss in Boots story. The traditonal Puss in Boots was in service to a master, the youngest son of a well-to-do miller. Puss helps him to marry a princess and become a prince. In this movie, Puss in Boots is a suave, milk-drinking, ladies' man and swashbuckling outlaw who does good deeds.

The Story of Puss in Boots

Puss, as a newborn kitty, was left at the doorstep of an orphanage and was brought up under the care of a kindly matron that took care of him and who he comes to regard as his mother. At that same orphanage, Puss bonds with the young Humpty Dumpty and they become like brothers. They have a dream to get out of the orphanage and the city of San Ricardo. As they grew older, Puss became a fine upstanding citizen of San Ricardo while Humpty Dumpty falls in with some bad characters. Things come to a head and Humpty Dumpty embroils Puss in a crime and Puss becomes an outlaw. Years pass and Puss finds out that magic beans (of Jack and the Beanstalk fame) exist and he sees that as a way to redeem himself in San Ricardo. The magic beans also causes Puss to cross paths with his old nemesis, Humpty and Humpty's new partner, Kitty Softpaws. In fact how Puss and Kitty meet is one of the highlights in the movie and features a latin dance duel that is entertaining, humorous, and enjoyable. Needless to say, the three make a pact and set off on an adventure to steal the magic beans, grow the beanstalk, and abscond with the goose that lays the golden eggs which they can bring to San Ricardo to redeem Puss and Humpty's reputation. However all is not what they seem but in the end, sacrifice and brotherhood bring redemption.

Antonio Banderas is the voice for Puss and Salma Hayek is the voice for Kitty Softpaws. There is great chemistry between the two and their voices do a great job of embodying the subtleties of their respective personalities and their relationship to each other. Zach Galifianakis is the voice for Humpty. I had no idea that Humpty had such dimension in his character. I just thought he was an egg that lost his balance on a wall. Dreamworks continues to build an animated world that uses traditional fairy tales as the starting point and creates something totally different and thrilling. Children will obviously like this movie for its story, the characters, and its visual appeal. Adults will find more than enough to engage them in this movie as they will appreciate the jokes, entendres, and ironies. This movie is a wonderful addition to your movie collection.

Pretty good hub, as I have to say I don't disagree with any of your points about this movie. Personally, I was a bit surprised how well this movie was, as I know it seemed like the Shrek franchise was running out of steam when the fourth movie ended. However, "puss in boots" might just end up becoming a new franchise for dreamworks to develop now, as they definitely left it open for a sequel. Anyway, thanks for the great read, and as always, it was a real pleasure seeing you again as well. :)
