A Return to Form for the Mighty Maiden

Iron Maiden's sizable fanbase is generally a very vocal lot, but prior to the release of 2000's BRAVE NEW WORLD, they'd been suffering in silence for quite some time. It had been a rough couple of years for the venerable British institution - their arena-ready metal style fell out of popular favor in the face of the early '90s Grunge revolution, then their beloved lead bellower Bruce Dickinson shocked fans by abruptly leaving the band to pursue a solo career. Maiden drafted the powerful, but ultimately incompatible, wailer Blaze Bayley (formerly of Wolfsbane) to replace Dickinson and went on to release two plodding, poorly received studio albums with him on the mic (1995's THE X FACTOR and 1998's VIRTUAL XI). Faster than you could say "Up the Irons!", Maiden found themselves toiling away in mid-size theatres and small rock clubs rather than the huge stadiums they'd become accustomed to. Meanwhile Dickinson, having toyed with pop metal and grunge on his first several solo outings, re-united with another former Maiden-ite, guitarist Adrian Smith, and cut an excellent pair of no-frills metal records - 1997's ACCIDENT OF BIRTH and 1998's THE CHEMICAL WEDDING - that sounded more like classic Maiden than Maiden themselves did at that time. With Dickinson's stock rising at the same time that his former band's was plummeting, Maiden suddenly announced that they had ousted Bayley and welcomed both Dickinson and Smith back into the fold. A highly successful "greatest hits" tour followed in 1999, and then the band released the highly anticipated BRAVE NEW WORLD, their first studio collaboration with Dickinson in almost a decade, a year later.

Though BRAVE NEW WORLD enjoys a measure of worship from the Maiden fanbase nowadays, those fans were not much more than cautiously optimistic about it prior to its release. Maiden's last few studio records with Bruce at the helm (1990's NO PRAYER FOR THE DYING and 1992's FEAR OF THE DARK) had sounded rather tired and limp when compared to their early '80s breakthrough classics. When BRAVE NEW WORLD finally hit the streets, those fans were pleased to hear that the album not only surpassed those less than stellar records, but it also utterly erased the tepid-at-best (and I'm being generous there!) Blaze Bayley era. On BRAVE NEW WORLD, the band had seemingly decided to pick up where they'd left off on 1988's SEVENTH SON OF A SEVENTH SON, which is considered by most to be the last truly essential album of Dickinson's original tenure.

Iron Maiden has never been a band that worried about three-minute radio singles, and as a result most of BRAVE NEW WORLD consists of sprawling, epic works, with only three of the songs coming in under the five minute mark. Things kick off nicely with the opening track "The Wicker Man," which is wrapped around a galloping riff that brings to mind such classics as "Wrathchild" or "Invaders." "The Mercenary" and "Fallen Angel" also keep their feet firmly planted in straight-ahead metal territory. Much ado has been made about the 1970s style progressive-rock influence that's permeated much of Maiden's later works, and though Steve Harris has never hidden his admiration for such acts as early Genesis and Jethro Tull, have no fear - nobody's going to mistake BRAVE NEW WORLD for a King Crimson album. The spacey feeling of such bands does pop up occasionally during the lengthier tracks like "Nomad," the excellent "Out of the Silent Planet" and "The Thin Line Between Love and Hate," but it's always tempered with plenty of up-front, pounding bass lines and classic Maiden guitar runs. The happiest news of all was that Dickinson's voice, which had been something of a hit or miss proposition on his last few Maiden albums, sounds as strong and vital as it did twenty years ago throughout the CD. "The Human Air Raid Siren" was definitely back in full force!

Summing It Up...

Overall, BRAVE NEW WORLD may not have been the "ultimate" Maiden album that many fans had hoped for, but it was definitely a welcome return to form by a band who'd had much to prove. The sparkling production by Kevin Shirley (best known for his work with progressive metal titans Dream Theater) successfully captured the Iron Maiden that the fans had been waiting to hear again since the end of the 1980s. As we all know by now, BRAVE NEW WORLD resuscitated Maiden's waning fortunes and relaunched them back into the musical stratosphere, where they've been regularly releasing albums and touring the Enormo-Domes of the world ever since its release. At a time when many so-called "classic" bands were reuniting amidst much hype, only to disappoint fans with sub-par albums (KISS' disappointing PSYCHO CIRCUS, anyone?), Iron Maiden thankfully avoided the temptation to skate along on their reputation and successfully entered the 21st century in style.

EXCELLENT review!!!!!!!! I remember when I first heard Wicker Man prior to album's release - as soon as the song kicked off with Adrian's monster riff, I knew the where back. Easily the best Maiden since 7th son!!!!!! The album feels like the next logical progression from 7th son.

Obviously Maiden was seriously missing Bruce, but you can't discount the return of Adrian. His return solidified the Maiden line up and showed that three guitars are better than two!!!!!

If you don't believe me, just listen to Jannick's solo in Blood Brothers (the last solo in the song after the refrain) - one of the BEST SOLOS Maiden has ever record.

UP THE IRONS!!!!!!

The 90s were not kind to the metal bands of the 80s in general. There are a few exceptions to that, but it seems in the last decade, a resurgence of those bands occurred that brought back there waning fan bases and created a whole new generation of fans.

Great review of a great album.

Thanx Duck... you're right, the 90s were a tough decade for the metal scene... I should know, I was there, haha. Suddenly all the cool concerts and album releases started drying up, and the resurgence didn't start happening till the end of the decade.

Well, yeah. When two of biggest bands in metal (Iron Maiden and Judas Priest) both had replacement singers, nobody wanted to be bothered with'em.

I still love this album and I like the line that nobody is going to mistake this for a King Crimson album (a band I am also a fan of), they took their various influences and infused them with what Iron Maiden does best. Excellent review.

Not my favorite Maiden album, but I think I should give it another spin after storing it semi-permanently in my huge box o' CD's. Maiden is one of my favorite bands, but I wasn't a huge fan of Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, as I didn't hear much there worth listening to. You know the chorus to the title track? Not very creative. Powerslave and Number of the Beast are essential metal listening, in my book. Good review, I'll give it another go.

Thanx Steve - I dig "Seventh Son," even though I must confess I never understood what the so-called "Concept" that ties the whole album together was about. Haha.

I still listen to B.N.W. quite frequently, at the time of course I was over the moon about it since Bruce was back in the driver's seat, but nowadays I'd say it settles comfortably into the middle of the Maiden pack.

Describing King Crimson as "spacey" means you never heard them in your life! LOL.

Nice review, I started paying attention to Maiden again around the time Dance With Death came out. I grabbed that album and then also picked up the Rock In Rio DVD. Honestly, after hearing the live versions of many of the Brave New World tracks when I finally got the studio album I was disappointed in it. I think in every single instance the live versions are better, more powerful and have an extra spark of energy lacking in the studio versions.

I would say Brave New World is probably my least favorite album since Maiden reformed, still a good record and better than No Prayer, FOTD and the Bailey abortions...but overall, they still needed some time to gel back together.
