Music You Don't Want To Miss

Everyone knows that the focus of my hubs is homeopathy, poetry and spirituality. However, I couldn't pass up a chance to invite everyone to take a listen to a group of musicians that I find inspirational. This young group, based in Brooklyn, caught my eye on their psychedelic video mix of brightly colored transformational images and the sound behind it.The more I explored, the more I liked the innovative sights and sounds. I love the rhythmic electronica and bells.

The group "Chairlift" is composed of Aaron Pfenning, songwriter who plays electronics and guitar, Caroline Polachek, lead singer, and songwriter who plays synthesizer, and Patrick Wimberly on drums and keyboard and produces the songs.

Chairlift - Doves of Summer

Doves of Summer Lyrics

“In a sweet and slow vibration
it was all I had to hear
he came shivering the plaster
in a long conversation
come and take your last rebuttal
from the battle that you'll lose
pit your fear against your senses
in a long, long conversation
cause I won't go far from here
to watch you as you float away
I can hear the doves of summer
they are migrating today
I’ll take a cold magnetic hammer
we'll smash ’em all up into shards
the static flying doves of summer
have laid their eggs in our backyards”

The Group's History

[Doves of Summer is audio only]

Caroline began as lead singer of "The Rhodies". Later, Aaron Pfenning and Caroline Polachek collaborated at the University of Colorado in October 2005 as a two-some. The group intended to make background music for haunted houses. Along with bassist Kyle McCabe, "Chairlift" recorded the beginning of "Daylight Savings EP" at New Monkey Studio in Los Angeles, California in April 2006. "Chairlift" moved to Williamsburg, Brooklyn later that summer in August 2006 and signed to Kanine Records in June 2007. Patrick Wimberly joined the group in early 2007. Everyone attributes their sound to the 80's American pop charts.

Before moving to Brooklyn, New York the band played in Boulder, Colorado. Even if I post their tunes numerous times here, you will enjoy listening over and over again. With the smacking rhythm and the repetitious melody you'll be tapping your feet and hitting "replay."

Their hit song “Bruises” is on their album, “Does You Inspire You.” Many groupies have fallen in love with Caroline's voice and the total group sound.

You really know you've made it big when you are listed on Wikipedia

If the song "Bruises" sounds familiar, it is because it was introduced as a commercial for the iPod Nano.

The TC Daily Planet described the group as "morphed into a lush, moody pop band," and praised lead singer Caroline Polachek with a "really terrific multifaceted voice, and she segues easily between English and French over the group’s electronic beats."

The video Planet Health also can be found on the album 'Does You Inspire You' 2008 Kanine Records.

Taking us back to an orgy setting in ancient Rome with toga and grapes, the psychedelic color with voice over oozing gently along and tinkling strings creates multilayered textures. There is a story line about life. Kick you off planet earth into a universal cold. “Stop, drop and roll.” Heading us into the fire. I am feeling great now. With the 80's beat.. everyone has some connection to this band's sound from the past even with the introduction of Chinese elements.

Video and Lyrics

Chairlift - Bruises, Lyrics

First Verse:

I tried to do handstands for you
I tried to do headstands for you
Every time I fell you on yeah every time I fell
I tried to do handstands for you
But every time I fell for you
I'm permanently black and blue,
permanently blue for you

I tried to do handstands for you
I tried to do headstands for you
Every time I fell on you yeah every time I fell
I tried to do handstands but every time I fell for you
I'm permanently black and blue, permanently blue for

Chorus:
You-ooo OOOoooo
For you-ooo OOOooo
So black and blue-oooo OOOoooo
For you-ooo OOOooo

Man's verse:

I grabbed some frozen strawberries so I could ice your bruisy knees
But frozen things they all unfreeze and now I taste like
All those frozen strawberries I used to chill your bruisy knees,
Hot July ain't good to me
I'm pink and black and blue

2nd Verse:

I got bruises on my knees for you
And grass stains on my knees for you
Got holes in my new jeans for you
Got pink and black and blue

Got bruises on my knees for you
And grass stains on my knees for you
Got holes in my new jeans for you
Got pink and black and blue for

Chorus:
You-ooo OOOoooo
For you-ooo OOOooo
So black and blue-ooo OOOOoooo
For you-oooo OOOooo

Do-doo-do-do-do
Do-doo-do-do-do
Do-doo-do-do-do
Do-doo-do-do-do
Do-doo-do-do-do

Denver Post Colorado: Grown Band Chairlift Rides iPod Buzz

Ricardo Baca, music critic had a great interview with the group.

Interview Excerpt:

Q: Was "Does You Inspire You" entirely made in New York? If so, where and when? Tell us a fun story about the making of the record.

A: "Does You Inspire You" was recorded in New York City at Great City Productions by Britt Meyers and also recorded in Brooklyn by the three of us. There's a song on the record called "Somewhere Around Here" that I wrote while isolated during a snowstorm inside a basement with no heat, and I remember having a moment of sudden clarity and thinking my cellphone is the answer to this song.

Of course I was in a state of total delirium. I opened my phone and found samples I recorded previously of our cockatiel singing in our apartment, and laced them into the beginning of the song. Had any more time passed with me alone in that room, the song would have turned into a Jim Henson horror show. Luckily, Caroline came in a few moments later and we finished the song together. But I find it endearing that we kept the bird singing in the song. The bird happened to be in the right key too! It was eerily perfect.

Voice Comparisons

There have been so many who have compared Caroline Polachek's voice with Regina Spektor that I thought I would let you compare for yourself.

It’s soft and sultry and sweet.

Tom of UpandRunningRecording Interview Excerpt:

What made you work with Jon Brion? What record(s) made you aware of just how great the man is?

Dido replies: I met Jon at Abbey Road one day and the thing that struck me the most was meeting someone who shared my obsession and joy with music and details and stories and sounds and just approaches it with total love and excitement and newness every day. He really is the most wonderful person to work with. He brings out the best in everyone and I definitely feel like he did with me. Truly inspiring and a great, great experience. Probably one of my favorite Jon records is the Eternal Sunshine soundtrack. But there's so much of what he does that I absolutely love. The Fiona Apple records too. What about you?

Feist - Open Window

Leslie Feist - Open Window - Cover

I even read that Caroline sounded like Leslie Feist, a solo artist that does her own electric and acoustic guitars. But, again, you judge for yourself. Personally, I don't see their likeness.

Hi Tom ~ this was a fun hub to write as I listened to all the music over and over and over again. I woke up with the songs spinning in my head. I'm waiting to hear from others how they feel about the comparison of lead singing voices. Are there similarities, and how would people describe their differences? Have a great day, Debby

We must have common musical preferences, although I do love classical music, as well.
