Sawyer Fredericks: From Farmer to Superstar

Sawyer Fredericks
Sawyer Fredericks | Source

I’ll admit it: I’m in love. Yeah, I’m old enough to be this boy’s grandmother, but I’m in love… with his soul. Sawyer Fredericks, raised on a farm in Upstate New York, is – without question - an old soul. His music and original lyrics speak far beyond the sixteen years he’s graced this Earth. And grace is what Sawyer Fredericks possesses. Grace. Soul. Humility. Innocence. Conviction. Truth. Truth to himself. And love. Even the covers this phenomenal talent sings have his stamp on them. He’s not like any other artist on the charts today.

And that’s why I love him. Sawyer Fredericks brings a lost art back to the stage and our hearts. His earthy voice pours folk back into music. The timing couldn’t be more perfect. With all the sex and foul language that litters today’s lyrics, the world needs to be reminded of what music is and should be: a message of beauty, vulnerability, pain, struggle, and goodness.

Sawyer does just that using his voice and guitar as the only vehicles. No fancy electronic gizmos. No gimmicks; just a simple boy with a heart-felt need to share with the world.

Oh yeah. In case you don’t know who Sawyer Fredericks is, he won Season Eight of The Voice, which had some very talented singers, but no one sounded like Sawyer. From the moment he took stage on the Blinds (Auditions), he had my heart.

Apparently, America agrees with me.

Since being introduced to this amazingly talented boy, I’ve spent hours on You Tube listening to and viewing home videos of his work. It’s interesting to note that The Voice talent scouts found Sawyer Fredericks on You Tube and invited him to audition. Can you imagine? How cool is that?

Here’s a video of his Blind Audition on The Voice:

Check Out This 4-Chair Turnaround

Humble Beginnings

Sawyer Christopher Fredericks was born in Newtown, CT on March 31, 1999 to Carl and Kirsten Fredericks. He’s the youngest of three sons. The family spent some time in Roxbury, CT until they moved to Windrake Farm in Fultonville, NY in 2007. He tends the farm alongside his mom, dad, and brothers Skyler and Aric. Sawyer has named every one of the farm animals and can most likely be heard singing while he tends to the cows and collects eggs.

Sawyer has been playing guitar since 2010, when he was just 12 years old. Since then he’s written over three dozen songs and has performed at local farmers markets, open mic nights and other local venues. In 2013 he released his first full length CD “Out My Window”, featuring 15 original songs.

Enjoy the following video montage of various performances before appearing on The Voice:

Musical Influences

Two of Sawyer’s favorite artists are American folk singer/song writer Ray LaMontagne and the legendary band Creedence Clearwater Revival. His rendition of LaMontagne’s “Trouble” is poignant and emotional, keeping his fans and the judges captivated with his style.

Beginning with Season Seven, The Voice finalists are now encouraged to sing an original song in addition to the covers they perform on the season finale. This year, Sawyer was given the honor of singing “Please”, written by Ray LaMontagne. Needless to say, he was thrilled. In an interview with Hollywood Life, Sawyer had this to say about that:

“As far as I know, the song was written especially for me. I got a text from Ray and he sent me the song that he wanted me to record. Just getting that was amazing. I’m just so happy right now!”

— Sawyer Fredericks

Take a minute to listen to Sawyer’s performance:

Another stellar moment leading up to Sawyer’s win was the opportunity to sing a medley with legendary John Fogerty, formerly of CCR. You can tell they had a blast:

What Will the Future Bring?

For Sawyer Christopher Fredericks, the future is bright. His unique voice and soulful performances took him above the pop, rock, and country singers on The Voice. That speaks volumes for his talent and music in general. He is the beginning of a trend to send music back in time when artists had something to say and America needed – yearned – to listen.

With music greats such as Bob Dylan, Arlo Guthrie, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, and Joan Baez now taking residence in the dusty archives of radio – most often only coming out to play in Baby Boomer’s homes - Sawyer Fredericks has the heart and soul to bring folk music back to life. I have no doubt fame will not squelch the humble young man that he is; his feet are firmly planted in the soil of his roots. He will continue to sing to his cows and chickens and pour the wisdom of his old soul into the music the world so desperately needs.

Can’t you just imagine a folk revival on his parents’ 88-acre farm in Upstate New York? Now there’s an idea!

Peace,

Bravewarrior

P.S. I reached out to Sawyer requesting an interview but I’ve not heard back. I’m sure he’s taking a much needed break. If I do hear from him, I’ll surely do a follow-up article.

Sha GF.....You have blown me away with this fabulous Review/Tribute on a most incredible talent, "Sawyer Fredericks." I am with you all the way. From his very first appearance, he captured my total attention and stole my heart. So sweet & unassuming with the voice of an Angel and music from Heaven.

Yes, this music renews my faith that the sounds that lift our spirit and fill us with joy can still be heard & enjoyed.

I have missed so many of the "Voice" episodes, I appreciate what you share with your readers, Sha. CHEERS to you and to Sawyer!..UP+++ pinned and tweeted.

Sha....Meant to say......In less than 4 hours of easy cross State driving, I can be meeting Sawyer in the flesh, in Fultonville, on his family's farm....

I shouldn't let anything stop me......right??

Paula, I feel the same as you, obviously. I've always loved folk music. For such a young kid to have folk in his heart is just amazing to me. Most kids his age listen to that noisy stuff you hear thumping from cars as you travel down the road. So annoying!

You can see Sawyer's purity in his eyes. His parents must be so proud of him!

Thanx for the shares. I'm hoping he responds to my request for an interview. I have about 15 questions ready to go.

bravewarrior profile image

bravewarrior 18 months ago from Central Florida Author

I was going to ask you if Fultonville is near you. When you meet up with him (you can find him playing at the local farmers market) pass on my idea of having a folk revival on the farm. I'm sure the greats would be more than happy to join him. I'd even be willing to scrounge up plane fare. I'm staying with you, 'k? :-)

You already know how I feel about this talented kid. I hope he soars in the future. We need more music like his....hey, didn't Fogerty sound great on the show? My God, he hasn't lost his voice at all. :)

If Sawyer were a dog, he'd be a Golden Retriever. This kid is so real. What a pleasant surprise.

Sawyer Fredericks is indeed a very talented young man with an amazing voice. Thanks for introducing him to me, bravewarrior! I wonder if his music will reach SA?

bravewarrior profile image

bravewarrior 18 months ago from Central Florida Author

Bill, you're right about Fogerty. Although he's aged, his voice is still distinctively John Fogerty and CCR.

I have no doubt Sawyer will soar. Twitter's already aflutter with everything Sawyer. My inbox is going crazy with re-tweets and favorited tweets of this article from people I don't know, but have fallen in love with Sawyer, his music, and his soul.

Adagio, what a great analogy! Golden Retrievers are sweet and true. Sawyer Fredericks is a great model for this and upcoming generations. It's about time someone with heart and soul takes center stage. We all have a great deal we can learn from him.

bravewarrior profile image

bravewarrior 18 months ago from Central Florida Author

Martie, that's a good question. I'll bet if people buy his CDs and spread the word he'll become known there as well. I wonder if he'd be up for a live appearance out of country. He was all too ready to return to the farm after winning The Voice. City life is not his cup of tea.

Flying out to L.A. was his first experience on a plane and being so far from home. Fortunately, his mother (who's also his manager) was with him the entire time he was out there.

In one interview I read, both Sawyer and his mom felt bad that Dad and brothers had to take on their chores while they were in L.A. How humble is that?

To be compared to Dylan at age 16 is the biggest compliment the young man is ever going to receive. Great review Sha. I am not sure being compared to a Golden Retriever is at that same level of compliment.

bravewarrior profile image

bravewarrior 18 months ago from Central Florida Author

Mike, I knew what Adagio meant. Animals are too often better people than humans. Goldens are sweet, loving dogs.

Yes, being compared to Dylan is a compliment. Dylan is one of my favorite folk artists. I've seen him in concert four times, two of which were after he had throat cancer. His voice isn't the same, but he's a legend and that deserves a seat in the house in and of itself.

Sawyer will be a legend, too. It's hard to imagine that one day he will be old and will have earned that honor, but he's well on his way. I, for one, am grateful he auditioned for The Voice, otherwise I may never have discovered this musical gem.

adagio4639 profile image

adagio4639 18 months ago from Brattleboro Vermont

Comparing any 16year old to Bob Dylan is pretty ridiculous considering Dylan's body of work. Maybe it would be best to let Sawyer develop before "anointing" him with a stature that hasn't been earned yet. He won the Voice. He's not in the Rock and Roll hall of fame, with everybody recording his songs that span the past 50 years. And what I said was, IF he was a dog, he'd be a Golden Retriever, which is probably the best loved breed of all.

Great review of this young artist, Sha.

I'm ready for some folk music of sorts.

So tired of music where the words cannot be understood, or

am shocked when I do understand what they are saying.

Looks like you and Paula might have a road trip coming up real soon.

Don't want to get a phone call in the middle of the night to come bail

bravewarrior profile image

bravewarrior 18 months ago from Central Florida Author

Adiago, Dylan was 20 years old when he signed his first recording contract. Sawyer was 14 when he made his debut CD with original songs. Everyone has to start somewhere. Dylan wasn't a household name until 1964. Sawyer is becoming a household name right now, at age 16. In fact, he was 15 when his The Voice venture first began.

I absolutely can compare Sawyer to Dylan. Dylan was a pioneer, opening doors for folk singers in trying times. Sawyer is a pioneer in this new age, once again opening doors for artists to sing from the heart and convey a much-needed message.

I wrote a hub years ago called, "We the People - What Has Happened to Our Voice?" It's about music and how we once spoke out through the universal language of song. Sawyer is bringing that back.

His is today's Bob Dylan. Someone has to take his place and pick up where he left off. Why not Sawyer? It seems God has already given him the gift the world needs to hear. And I'd say, the world is finally showing they're ready to hear it.

I just knew he was going to win, and he was up against some other talented people. I love his voice! I think the sky is the limit for this young man. It seemed unlikely a farm boy with beautiful long hair could make you stop an totally focus on his beautiful songs. Great hub!

bravewarrior profile image

bravewarrior 18 months ago from Central Florida Author

D J, if I can quit laughing my ass off perhaps I can respond to your comment! LOL (seriously)

I can't think of any new music that has a spot in my collection. My music library is compiled of yesterday's artists. They range from Southern Rock, to Classic Rock to Country, to Folk to Alternative (Yanni, which is purely instrumental for the most part). I have several Dylan CDs, Joan Baez, Neil Young, CSN&Y and the list goes on. The fact is, the artists I collect get me thinking and moving. Music hasn't been the same since the '60s and '70s. It's nice to see a young person with an old soul be so strong that he's reviving an entire genre.

God bless him!

P.S. You won't have to bail me and Paula out. Chances are real good we'll drag you along with us!

bravewarrior profile image

bravewarrior 18 months ago from Central Florida Author

Whonu, you and me both. Folk music fell by the wayside in the new millennium and the advent of artificially mimicking instruments. For this young folk singer to have beat out the amazing artists that made it to the finals sends a message: it's time for a change.

I appreciate your viewpoint and am thrilled we're on the same page.

bravewarrior profile image

bravewarrior 18 months ago from Central Florida Author

Linda, I was so happy he won. There was a time I thought maybe he'd lose to Meghan Linsey. But he's steadfast in his genre and stays true to himself. I was afraid America wasn't ready to once again embrace folk, but his style is so unique, you can't help but pay attention when he opens his soul accompanied by his acoustic guitar. He's not only brought back folk music, but has given it a depth unheard before now.

bravewarrior profile image

bravewarrior 18 months ago from Central Florida Author

Gail, I was thrilled to see Sawyer win. We need a comeback of folk music and he is the one who has accomplished that feat. What strikes me is he's so young, yet so grounded. That's what America needs. That's what music needs. He didn't expect to win and may be sorry he did. His life will never be the same. But neither will ours (and that's a good thing), thanks to Sawyer Fredericks.

bravewarrior profile image

bravewarrior 18 months ago from Central Florida Author

Pamela, I think it took a farm boy to make us stop and listen. He's grounded. He lives by and respects the land. He communes with animals and makes them happy by singing to them. I don't know if that was his intent; I think it may be more that he was free to be himself in that environment. Whatever or whoever brought him out of his shell was destined to be. He has a calling and I'm listening.

BJ, had I not been a fan of The Voice (because I love music and appreciate those who can sing), I wouldn't have known about him either. As long as I've been watching the show, I've not seen an artist who has something different to offer. I was totally swept by Sawyer Fredericks. And I LOVE that America is ready and willing to hear this new voice in folk music.

Folk has always been a means of speaking out. Sadly, artists were afraid to do so after the Viet Nam era ended. We still need a strong voice that sends us back to our roots and reminds us of what is important in life. Sawyer Fredericks is an angel on Earth who will make a difference in this world. If we only listen and re-direct our ways, he will have done what God sent him to do.

Hi Shauna,

Well, you hit on another topic of great interest to me. I love The Voice and now only 'like' American Idol (I used to love it). Although I can't hear the music, I can feel the beat and of course, the words are on CC.

I have to say this boy is truly golden. He has a great career ahead of him and I hope he stays true to himself and doesn't fall in to the trappings of success that befalls so many in the entertainment world.

That hat is his signature and he never appeared without it. I think it went a long way to tagging him as adorable.

I was the only one in our family who pegged him for the winner. I got hit with "Mom, you gotta be kidding.... You're not grasping the calibre of talent that the others have.....He's just a kid....He doesn't stand a chance against Megan, Jax or the others....If he wins, the business will wreck him by the time he's 21 (citing the rise to stardom of several stars like Whitney Houston and some others who are not longer with us, having checked out at an early age.)

I don't think that will happen with this kid. Even though his family are farmers, I don't think his mother will let anything happen to "her baby." even if she has to hire someone (manager, personal assistant, etc.) to be with him 24/7 when she cannot.

The words to his original song is what I think cinched it for him, along with his trademark looks. His voice never faltered on each performance and he never once got flustered. He has all the earmarks of a true professional.

I think Megan was hoping to win in order to kickstart her career again (as she had said during one interview), but even without winning, she is back on the map, so to speak. Why she is no longer on Blake's music team is a mystery, maybe she left him to go out on her own, or maybe he got rid of her. Who knows?

But not to worry about any of the finalists. As in the past, I'm sure they all have some kind of deal in the works and their light will shine for a year or two, then they will fall by the wayside like the Ruben Studdard's, Phil Phillips (AIdol?) and any number of woe-forgottens I can't remember right now. LOL

I loved this article. I hope he (or "his people") contact you or at least give you an email interview.

I am tweeting this not only because it is a great article but because I have a number of people in the music industry as followers (producers, writers, arrangers, etc.) as well as journalists. Who knows? They might give you an honorable mention along the way.

Voted up and all across the board, as well as tweeted.

Rache :)

Rache, I hope stardom doesn't change Sawyer, too. I think he's strong enough in who he is, that he'll remain true to himself. Right now his mother is his manager; I'm sure she'll do everything in her power to protect him from the scavengers out there.

As far as Meghan, she and her ex-boyfriend were a duo who opened for Blake years ago. She went solo when she and her beau broke up and is trying to rebuild her career. As runner-up, I'm sure she already has a recording contract in the works.

I appreciate you sharing this. It would be awesome to be contacted by one of your influential followers.

Thanx for your in-depth comment. I enjoyed reading your family's varied reactions to Sawyer's talent. You're right - he never wavered. I did hear Pharrell make a statement that when Sawyer gets nervous he sings louder to counteract it. Brilliant move on his part. That shows you just how disciplined and in control of himself he is.

Shauna, I've been saying this a long time now, but at least 50% of kids today - I'm sure it's much more than that - are rejecting modern culture, and have been doing so for a long time. The talent-less negativity of hip-hop, the soulless virtues of so-called R&B - not real R&B - and so on... Most kids today look back for the real artists, in an endeavour to take their art forward... and all is reinvented. The good can never die. The bad will just fade away :-)

Linda, I so appreciate that! Meghan has a great voice, but it's nothing we haven't heard. Sawyer is unique and brings folk back to the forefront of the airwaves. I really hope he continues on and doesn't get frightened by his new-found fame.

If you get an interview with him that would be very cool.

Congratulations, Sawyer!!!! I love your voice and you seem to be a spiritual person. Keep up the good work, I am glad like BraveWarrior said that you are a breath of fresh air, putting out meaningful music, unlike many of today's stars. 5stars!

Blondey, Sawyer really is a breath of fresh air. I'm very impressed with not only his talent, but his strength of self. He knows exactly who he is and what he wants out of life. How many 16 year old kids can say that today?

Thanx for the visit!

Great hub, Shauna! What a lovely guy and a great voice. I agree with you that it's so good to have someone who sings about love and the good in the world - the feel good factor. I'm fed up with all the rubbish that's about too; they're out for the image and the cash and the attention, but not this man.

Thanks for bringing him to our attention.

Up ++ & shared.

Nell, I love his voice, too - it's so unique. So far, the only CD available is the one he made a few years ago. I do believe, however, that singles of what he sang on The Voice are available on iTunes. I'm looking forward to the first CD he puts out after his win.

I haven't heard back from Sawyer with regard to interviewing him. If he does respond (which I doubt), I'll post the interview here on HP.

Shauna, thank you for this wonderfully written tribute to Sawyer Fredericks. The first time he sang on The Voice my husband and I turned to each other and said, "WOW! He's one of a kind. Wouldn't it be amazing if he won?" Sawyer started out strong and just got better and better throughout the show. We were both surprised and delighted as we watched America fall in love with this unspoiled, loving young man and his beautiful, old soul, just as we had from the moment he started singing "In Constant Sorrow," a favorite song of ours that we discovered in the movie "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" That's a hard song for anyone to sing convincingly, but for a sixteen-year-old who has lived a happy, loving and much-love life to do so is simply remarkable. You've certainly done him justice here.

bravewarrior profile image

Hello! Thought I had read everything there was out there about Sawyer, but came across your article today, and all I can say is THANK YOU for putting into beautiful words exactly what my heart feels about Sawyer Fredericks. Now I am a 68 year old grandmother who has worked at her church for 22 years, and am not inclined to comment on celebrities, or even follow them in the news. But then along came Sawyer, and, you stated it so stunningly....I'm in love, with his soul! Obviously, I'm not the only one..America and the world agree. We have been yearning for a voice and spirit like Sawyer, and maybe didn't even realize it. I am a fan for life.

Hi

I have been creating my paranormal world, it's my favourite genre and it just seemed the right time. The weeks disappear like sand on the shore and before you realise months have passed!

I've missed reading my favourite writers here, so I popped back for a visit. How is Faith's story going?

Anna :)

bravewarrior profile image

bravewarrior 16 months ago from Central Florida Author

Anna, I'm afraid I haven't done much with Faith. I decided not to post any more chapters online. I'll complete the novel then look for an agent to represent me in hopes of publishing with a traditional publishing house. That's a long way off, though.

You're so good at writing in the paranormal genre. Have you written a book?

No I did not see him live. It only took me to hear the first 4 words of him sing and I was stunned. Lol I thought oh my what a voice. The thing that got me, he said, all I do is work on the farm get on my tractor trailer and sing while I work. I thought wow I bet the birds and farm animals really enjoyed him. He definitely has an amazing voice.

bravewarrior profile image

bravewarrior 16 months ago from Central Florida Author

I agree. There was one part during the show when Pherrell was trying to get Sawyer to loosen up and move a bit. He asked him what he does at home when he sings and he said, "I just kinda walk around." So Pherrell had him do that and his stage presence soared after that. I can't wait for his new CD to come out!!

Shauna,

This continues to be a magical night for me as I enjoy my hub hop. It has been a long time since I could just sit down (I don't have the fancy phone that allows you access 24/7--just my old desktop)

And everywhere I land, I come across something awesome and your hub is not different. First of all, I have an old fedora just like Sawyer wears--that I LOVE. Secondly, my youngest son, Joseph is following his dream and diligently pursuing his career as a musician/singer/songwriter. I know he will love this hub, too. He probably has already heard of this young talent, but I had not until I read your hub.

Thank You for introducing me to such a cool kid with incredible talent. Please consider this hub shared and pinned...

Blessings,

Kim

Thank you for sharing and pinning. I'm sure Sawyer will appreciate it!

Californiagrandma 5 months ago

Hello! I came back again to re-read your blog about Sawyer, and my thoughts and feelings haven't changed...and it's been almost a year! I was thrilled to be able to see him in person at House of Blues in San Diego, and even tho his voice was almost gone (and I think he may have been sick as well), he was a pro, and continued the entire performance. He even had to change up his song set at the last minute, as his voice wouldn't hit some of the notes. I wanted to meet him, but my "grandma genes" kicked in, and didn't want to bother him when he wasn't feeling well. Oh well, there's always next time : )...What a beautiful talent, and I am still a fan for life!

bravewarrior profile image

bravewarrior 5 months ago from Central Florida Author

I'm jealous that you got to see him in person, Californiagrandma! I would love for him to come to the Orlando area, but after what happened here last week, beginning with the killing of Christina Grimmie after her performance, and culminating with the largest massacre in U.S. history, I'd rather he stay close to home.

Bless his heart for not letting his illness stop the show. What a trooper!

Thanks for coming back and sharing your personal experience. I wish I'd been there!

Dianna, he already has a new album out and has been touring outside his general safe zone, upstate New York. He's very gifted, indeed!

Marlene, I agree with you. Sawyer is very unique - and humble. I'd imagine working the land and coming from a tight-knit family has everything to do with the building the character of this very talented young man.

He's kind of ruined it for The Voice, although I still watch it. There's been no one like him since he won.
