Snow White Movies 2012 - Who's the Fairest, of Them All
Several Snow White Movie Versions
As we all know, 2012 was the Chinese Year of the Dragon AND was Year of Snow White.
That is right. In 2012, there were four versions of Snow Whites. There were three movie versions and one television series version. If that is not enough, Disney was to release their version of Snow White in 2013, but kept it on hold, for now.
Let us take a quick look at all these four Snow White versions and check who is the fairest, of them all.
1. Snow White in 'Mirror Mirror' - the Movie
Mirror Mirror opened with a dismal box office take of $18 million and with bad reviews. It had Julia Roberts as the Evil Queen, Lily Collins as Snow White and Armie Hammer as Prince Charming. As of July 22nd, 2012, worldwide gross sales were $162,700,692. This is impressive, for a working budget of $85 m.
Everyone was expecting a much better version from director Tarsem Singh. Having helmed the critically acclaimed 'The Fall,' and 'The Cell', his Snow White version in Mirror Mirror, despite being visually spectacular, failed to move the tale forward and has not enough depth to set it apart.
In this comic retelling of the Snow White story, the Evil Queen mercilessly ruled her seized kingdom, taxed the people cruelly, and had Snow White exiled.
When Prince Charming comes along, both Snow White and the Evil Queen, fell, and fought for him. Snow White later became a bandit, with the help of seven gutsy dwarfs, fought to reclaim her birth right, and of course, wins Prince Charming as well.
Mirror Mirror may not be the fairest of them all but it was still watched-able.

2. Snow White in 'Snow White and the Huntsman' - the Movie
Snow White and the Huntsman was released on June 1st, 2012 in the USA and one day earlier in parts of Asia and Europe. For some unknown reasons, it was released two days earlier in Egypt. Anticipation was high for this movie version to be a better and grittier film, and in fact it was.
This Lord of the Rings-style film, however, opened to mix reviews and rake in $20.3 million on the first day of opening in 3,772 theaters in the U.S. Worldwide, it took in $39.3 million for first day screening. Gross worldwide sales, as at end June 2012, stood at $309,394,227 against a budget of $170 m.
In this retelling of the Snow White tale, the Evil Queen, played by Charlize Theron, arranged for the Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) to kill Snow White (Kristen Stewart), the only person in the fable land that is more beautiful than her. Things got complicated and instead, the Huntsman ended up being Snow White's defender and mentor. Together they joined forces to defeat the Evil Queen.
Most of the reviews are in praise of Charlize Theron's performance and generally credited her for 'saving the film'. Most reviewers agreed that the film did not fully exploit the story's full potential. Washington Post in its review wrote "is visually stunning, but lacks emotional sweep" Every reviewer, however, agreed that it was better than 'Mirror Mirror'

3. Snow White in 'Snow White: A Deadly Summer' - the Movie
Technically, there are only two film versions of Snow White for 2012; Mirror Mirror and Snow White and the Huntsman
The film, Snow White: A Deadly Summer was a straight-to-DVD release and not a theatrical release, and you should be thankful for that!
Director David DeCoteau's take on the Snow White tale was nowhere near the classic fairy tale. I supposed the only connection was the heroine's name, Snow White
In this version, Snow White (Shanley Caswell) was a disturbed young girl who got sent to a boot camp for troubled teens, by her evil stepmother. Of course, the evil stepmother consulted the mirror that convinced her that as long as Snow White is in the house, the rich husband would not give all his love and wealth to her.
Following in the tradition of the Snow White fable tale, seven other troubled teens were already in the disciplinary camp. Then, there was also the old story of some kids who had died there.
Things did not seem to appear right here as the teens got murdered, one by one. Snow White had to find the reason, before she too becomes a victim.
This was supposed to be a horror thriller, but there is no blood, no gore no excitement. It was lame and tame.
So save your valuable time by doing other things, instead of watching this film.
However, if you insist, then you can rent or buy the DVD that went on sale on March 20th, 2012.
- Rated PG13
- Genre Horror
- Starred Eric Roberts, Maureen McCormick, Shanley Caswell.
4. Snow White in 'Once Upon A Time' - an ABC Television series.
To be exact, Once Upon A Time, a weekly television series was not released in 2012, but late 2011 on the ABC television network in the USA. For the rest of the world, it was only available in 2012.
In this version, the Evil Queen casts an evil charm that takes away everyone in the fairy tale land of their memories and send them to planet earth, to be exact Storybrooke, Maine. However, the Evil Queen and a few others were fortunate enough to still have memories of their past.
All the people in Storybrooke are fairy tale characters that are under a curse by the Evil Queen. Emma, the long lost daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming, was the only one who can break this spell and save them all. As the story unfolds; intermingling scenes in Storybrooke and the character's past lives in the fairy tale land, the fight between the good and the bad continues.
This series stars Ginnifer Goodwin as Snow White/Mary Margaret Blanchard, Jennifer Morrison as the daughter Emma Swan, Lana Parrilla as The Evil Queen/Regina Mills, and Josh Dallas as Prince Charming/David Nolan
Once Upon A Time - Season 2
Season 2 premiered on September 30th, 2012. As in Season 1, Season 2 had the storyline interspersed between Storybrooke and the fairy-tale world.
The main characters from Season 1 were back in Season 2. These include characters from the fairy-tale world; Red Riding Hood, Belle, Mad Hatter, Jiminy Cricket, Pinocchio, the 7-Dwarfs, and Blue Fairy.
New fairy tale characters that were introduced for Season 2 were Princess Aurora, Mulan, Captain Hook, Peter Pan, Prince Phillip, Sir Lancelot, and Giant from Jack & the Bean Stalk.
Once Upon A Time - Season 3
The first half of Season 3 premiered in September 2013 in the USA and the second half in March 2014.
The story revolved around the main characters' journey to Neverland from Storybrooke to find the kidnapped Henry Mills from Peter Pan and the Lost Boys.
Overall, the Once Upon a Time series were met with positive reviews from the critics and viewers alike. Reviewers liked the unpredictable storylines and the effective flash-forward technique used in telling the story.

5. Snow White in Disney's The Order of the Seven - Movie
Disney started to develop this project since 2002 which was initially called Snow and the Seven. It is now known as The Order of the Seven and was to be released in 2013.
However, as of now, Disney announced that all development works on the project are put on hold and its fate is unclear.
Disney's original retelling of the much loved Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs fable goes to the far east for inspiration. It was supposed to be a martial arts theme film version. In this story, an English girl returned to Hong King for her father's funeral and discovered her step mother's evil plot to kill her. She escaped to China and together with the seven warriors, fought to regain her destiny.
