South Park (TV show 1997)
South Park is an animated comedy series currently airing on Comedy Central. It stars Trey Parker as Stan Marsh/Eric Cartman and Matt Stone as Kyle Broflovski/Kenny McCormack. The creators are Trey Parker and Matt Stone.
The story centers around the adventures of four boys: Eric Cartman, Stan Marsh, Kenny McCormack, and Kyle Broflovski. They live in the fictional Colorado town of South Park.
South Park manages to mix political and social satire with toilet humor. The show has been subject to much criticism of its portrayal of celebrities and religion. For example in the episode "Cartoon Wars", the story is about offending Muslims by placing Muhammad in an episode of the TV show Family Guy. It turns out that the episode did not offend Muslims. But the very end of the show depicts Jesus Christ, President Bush, Katie Holmes, Tom Cruise, and Carson Kressley defecating on each other, which caused outrage from many Christian and parental groups.
Of all the character interactions on the show, the relationship between Kyle and Cartman is the most notable. Cartman is always making some insulting remark about Kyle being Jewish. Kyle, on the other hand, makes fun of Cartman because of his excessive weight. Kyle usually wins the moral arguments while Cartman wins the improbable arguments. For instance in the episode stated above, Kyle, at first, goes with Cartman to Hollywood to help get the Family Guy episode pulled but then goes against him when he discovers his true intentions. Kyle wins when the episode goes on as planned. In another episode, Cartman bets Kyle that he can prove leprechauns do exist. Cartman succeeds and, therefore, scores a victory over Kyle.
To wrap, South Park is probably one of the most controversial shows ever made, but it somehow manages to be a major success for its creators.
