About the song...

The song was co-written by Michael Kamen (an American composer with an impressive resume of film scores) and Eric Clapton (who needs no introduction) while working on the soundtrack for Lethal Weapon 3.

They roped in Sting for lyrics and vocals. Who after some deliberation decided to go with the buddy movie theme. He figured that the Mel Gibson and Danny Glover characters were big macho guys who'd have some reluctance about expressing their love for each other, but they'd say, "if you need someone to stop you getting killed, it'll probably be me."

The smooth sax solo that drops in halfway through Clapton's guitar solo and then meanders in and out of the comes courtesy of David Sanborn.

The American alto saxophonist was a regular guest member of Paul Shaffer's band on Late Night with David Letterman. He has been a highly sought after session player since the late sixties playing with Who's Who of celebrity artists, such as Eric Clapton, Roger Daltrey, Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, David Bowie, James Taylor, George Benson, Elton John, Linda Ronstadt, Billy Joel, The Eagles, Ween and Japanese pop star Utada Hikaru.

Michael Kamen has worked with Queen, Aerosmith, Tom Petty, David Bowie, Eurythmics, Queensr├┐che, Rush, Metallica, The Cranberries, Bryan Adams and Kate Bush, just to name a few.

In addition to that he has scored films such as Highlander, X-Men, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Licence to Kill, the Lethal Weapon series, the first three films of the Die Hard series, and many others.

The song was released as a single and also on the Lethal Weapon 3 soundtrack. Sting would later re-record it for his 1993 album Ten Summoner's Tales.

It's Probably Me Lyrics

By Sting, Michael Kamen and Eric Clapton

If the night turned cold and the stars looked down

And you hug yourself on the cold cold ground.

You wake the morning in a stranger's coat,

No one would you see.

You ask yourself, who'd watch for me?

My only friend, who could it be?

It's hard to say it, I hate to say it, but it's probably me.

When your belly's empty and the hunger's so real

And you're too proud to beg and too dumb to steal,

You search the city for your only friend,

No one would you see.

You ask yourself, who'd watch for me?

A solitary voice to speak out and set me free.

I hate to say it, I hate to say it, but it's probably me.

You're not the easiest person I ever got to know

And it's hard for us both to let our feelings show.

Some would say I should let you go your way,

You'll only make me cry.

But if there's one guy, just one guy

Who'd lay down his life for you and die,

I hate to say it, I hate to say it, but it's probably me.

When the world's gone crazy and it makes no sense

And there's only one voice that comes to your defense.

The jury's out and your eyes search the room

And one friendly face is all you need to see.

And if there's one guy, just one guy

Who'd lay down his life for you and die,

I hate to say it, I hate to say it, but it's probably me.

I hate to say it, I hate to say it, but it's probably me...

Thank you for this hub. This song is so beautiful and I have never heard it before. I enjoyed reading the background and appreciate that you took the time to write the words down. Very powerful effect.
