Ten Funny and Outrageous Songs

Different, Funny but Great!

Over its seventy odd years of musical history, Bollywood has experimented with fun, comedy and weirdness in a way that may be unique in the entire global film industry, because of the unparalleled popularity of songs and music in Bollywood movies. The results are some extremely unconventional songs, that offer more than comedy. These numbers are almost weird and sometimes border on being plainly outrageous. In a way, that was the reaction of creativity to the various taboos of the traditional society of those times and may have paved the way for more sensible experiments in its evolution.

However, some of these weird experiments have a great character that makes the stand out amid the crowd. They provide new dimensions of expression, comedy, creativity and fun. In their own way, they then attain the status of masterpieces.

Here is a list of ten best ustrange, unconventional and weird songs of Bollywood. Their greatness lies as much in their weirdness as in their music and choreography. It also brings to fore the adventurous spirit that tried to break all shackles, and succeeded, when backed by some of the great actors, musicians and singers.

Tak Tak Dhum Dhum .....

This is one of the great experiments with spontaneous dancing in Bollywood and you can feel the energy and rhythm as two young boys and eight convicts (in a reform project) dance to the tune of a female toy seller (played by Sandhya, whose dancing abilities are more than apparent). The song has a spontaneity, rhythm and choreography that you cannot expect even from the best in the business. At first glance, one can be at a loss at how to react, but regain your senses and you will realise the strange, but great artistic composition of this song-dance sequence. The movie Do Aankher Barah Haath, directed by V Shantaram, is one of the best ever in Bollywood. It was also the first to win a Golden Globe Award in 1959. The song is voiced by Lata Mangeshkar, music composed by Vasant Desai and lyrics written by Bharat Vyas.

Rukmini, Rukmini, Shadi ke baad kya ....

An outrageous piece of creativity and innovation that beautifully brings about the preparations within the family and excitement about the wedding night. In a society where intimate scenes were taboo, the director, Mani Ratnam, arguably one of the best of his generation, resorts to a dance involving dancers from all ages to represent the community stake in an affair between two individuals. A lovey and impressive depiction of a wedding night from the eyes of a closed society. The greatness of the song is contributed largely its melody, composed by A R Rahman, another living legend. Voices are by Baba Sehgal and Shweta Shetty, and lyrics by P K Mishra.

It denotes the free spirit of a young girl (played by Sonam Kapoor) with a white pigeon being effectively used as its mascot, while a young American of Indian descent (played by Abhshek Bacchan) watches the whole thing with a fascination that tells you all. Directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, the song is sung by Mohit Chauhan and lyrics are by Prasoon Joshi.

Eena Meena Deeka .....

If you want to witness the genius of Kishore Kumar , this song provides it on a platter. The year was 1957, with hardly any Western component in the classical based music of Bollywood till then, and out of nowhere, Kishore Kumar (the singer and also the lead male dancer) brings this milestone. A hilarious piece of comic dance performance, the replication by female lead, Vijayanthimala (sung by Asha Bhonsle) , equally unconventional and decades ahead of its time. This song depicts the free spirit of a young country ready to experiment with itself

Aana meri jaan Sunday ke Sunday ...

As the country enjoyed its freedom from colonial rule in 1947, this song was one of the first major attempts to break free from stereotypes and traditions by Bollywood. The scene, with a Western educated man trying to impress a married traditional wife, was considered outrageous at that time, though after 65 years of Bollywood, the boundaries of weirdness seemed to have widened much farther. Dear Kumar

How can you exclude Chahe Koi Mujhe Junglee Kahe, from the list? Is it a delibrate omission?

Your point is well taken. Chahe koi mujhe junglee kahe would be in this list if it was only audio, but the video part of that song is less weird. The title of this hub earlier was Best weird songs of Bollywood - maybe that would explain.

'Muthu Kullika..' had Mehmood opposite a South Indian actress. The actress is not Anjana Mumtaz. The song 'Arre re maaf karo...ja ja ja jane do' from the same movie (Do Phool) was picturized on Anjana Mumtaz with Aruna Irani, Mehmood and Vinod mehra :)

Two more weird songs can be added to the list, one is Mera Naam Shabnam Hai from Movie "Kati Patang" and another one is Saj Rahi Gali Meri Amma Sunehre Gote Mein from movie "Kunwara Baap". :)
