The CW - The Carrie Diaries, Nikita and Beauty And The Beast renewed, Cult cancelled - Ratings, Cancellations and Renewa

From now on, I will be posting TV Ratings, Renewal and Cancellation updates and Reviews on my own website.

This hub discusses the ratings of TV shows that air on The CW and what this means for the future of these shows. It contains lists of The CW's latest likely and official cancellations, pick-ups and new and returning shows' premiere dates. If a show is picked up this means it will get a full season (22 episodes) instead of the usual 13 episodes a new show starts with. For shows with a full season (because of the pick-up or because it returned for a second season), the 2013 ratings have more influence on their renewal chances than the 2012 ratings.

After the lists there's a graph with the adults 18-49 ratings from all current The CW series. All of these shows are discussed individually below that; what are the ratings and what has the future in store for this show?

What do you think of these The CW shows? Which ones do you think should get another season, and which ones should definitely not return? Let me know in the comments section!

Beauty and the Beast (Renewed)

(05/10): Another rating of 0.5 for 'Beauty and The Beast' and a total viewer count of 1.29.

(05/03): Another steady rating for 'Beauty and The Beast', this week's rating is a 0.5 in the all important demo. In total 1.23 million people tuned in.

(04/27): Just like NBC, The CW decided yesterday to renew some of its shows. 'Beauty and The Beast' as well as 'Hart Of Dixie' are renewed for a new season. The 'Vampire Diaries' spinoff 'The Originals' has been ordered to series.

(04/26): Ratings for 'Beauty and the Beast' dropped slightly, with a rating of 0.5 for this week's episode. Total viewers was 1.24 million.

(04/19): 'Beauty and the Beast' is still steady at an 0.6 in adults 18-49. Total viewers went up by almost 100,000 to 1.59 million. Being the most steady and highest rating of the three shows battling for the (most likely) two spots on the Fall 2013 schedule, 'Beauty And The Beast' is likely to be renewed.

(03/29): A steady rating for 'Beauty and the Beast', with another 0.6 in adults and a total of 1.50 million viewers for this week's episode, making it a Likely Renewal.

(03/22): 'Beauty and the Beast' gained one tenth after several weeks getting a rating of 0.5. This week's rating is a 0.6 in the adults 18-49 demo and 1.72 million people tuned in.

(03/15): 'Beauty and the Beast' got a rating of 0.5 in the all important demo, just like the previous couple of episodes. A total of 1.43 million people tuned in.

(02/22): This week 'Beauty and the Beast' has another 0.5 in the adults 18-49 demo and 1.52 million people tuned in.

(02/15): 'Beauty and the Beast' dropped another tenth in the ratings, bringing it to a 0.5 in adults 18-49. A total of 1.40 million people tuned in.

(02/08): Dropping a tenth in the ratings to an 0.6 and 1.48 million viewers, this marks the first time that 'Beauty and the Beast' goes lower than 'The Carrie Diaries'. Throw 'Hart Of Dixie' in there as well, and this will be a very interesting spring. Which ones will survive?

(02/01): This week, 'Beauty and the Beast' managed to match last week's rating with another 0.7 in the coveted demographic. With 1.72 million, total viewers was a little lower than the previous episode.

(01/25): It's been a while since 'Beauty and the Beast' was on TV, six weeks to be precise. The show got back with a pretty good rating of 0.7 in the all important demo. In total 1.79 million people tuned in.

'Beauty and the Beast' started off strong with a 1.2 in the adults 18-49 demo and 2.78 million viewers for the first episode. After the pilot the ratings dropped down, averaging a 0.6 rating and 1.7 million viewers over the following episodes. After five episodes The CW ordered a full season for the show.

Even though these ratings have earned 'Beauty and the Beast' a Full Season Pick-Up it doesn't mean it is a Likely Renewal as well. These ratings will not earn 'Beauty and the Beast' this title, but their is still plenty of hope. If the ratings don't drop and maybe even get a bit higher this show might be renewed, otherwise this show will likely be tossed in the Cancellation-bin.

The Carrie Diaries (Renewed)

(05/09): Contrary to what I expected, 'The Carrie Diaries' has been renewed. This can mean two things; either 'Hart Of Dixie' will be cancelled, or both the shows will be renewed along with the renewed 'Beauty and the Beast'.

(04/17): 'Hart Of Dixie' returned with ratings higher than 'The Carrie Diaries'. Most likely, two out of 'Beauty And The Beast', HOD and TCD will be renewed. Since it is currently the lowest rating of the three, that means 'The Carrie Diaries' is downgraded to a Likely Cancellation. However, 'Hart Of Dixie' did drop a tenth. As soon as it goes below 'The Carrie Diaries' ratings, the roles will be reversed.

(04/09): Another 0.4 for 'The Carrie Diaries' this week, and 1.00 million people tuned in. If 'Beauty And The Beast' and 'Hart Of Dixie' return from their short hiatuses at the same levels as before, 'The Carrie Diaries' will be downgraded to a Likely Cancellation.

(04/02): 'The Carrie Diaries' gets a rating of 0.3 in the all important demo. A total of 0.87 million people tuned in.

(03/26): 'The Carrie Diaries' has another rating of 0.4 in the adults 18-48 demo, 0.83 million people tuned in.

(03/19): This week 'The Carrie Diaries' has a steady rating, this weeks rating is a 0.4 in the all important demo. A total of 1.04 million people tuned in.

(03/12): Another 0.4 for 'The Carrie Diaries', while 1.03 million people tuned in.

(03/05): A steady rating for 'The Carrie Diaries' this week, scoring a rating of 0.4 in the all important demographic. This week's total viewer count is 1.1 million.

(02/16): 'The Carrie Diaries' was even in the ratings this week, with a rating of 0.4 in adults 18-49 and a total viewer count of 1.0 million.

(02/19): This week's episode of 'The Carrie Diaries' dropped in the ratings, scoring a 0.4 in the 18-49 demographic. A steady 1.08 million people tuned in to watch.

(02/12): The rating of 'The Carrie Diaries' is a 0.5 in the all important demo and 1.20 million people tuned in.

(02/05): Adding two tenths or a massive 40%, 'The Carrie Diaries' episode for this week scores a series high at 0.7 in adults 18-49. 1.51 million people tuned in, and the show is thereby back in the battle with sophomore 'Hart Of Dixie' and fellow freshman 'Beauty And The Beast'.

(01/29): Steady just below The CW's scripted average, 'The Carrie Diaries' rated an 0.5 in adults 18-49, just like last week. Total viewers went up by about 100K to 1.38 million.

(01/22): The second episode of 'The Carrie Diaries' got a rating of 0.5 in the all important demo and 1.27 million people watched this episode.

(01/15): The very first episode of 'The Carrie Diaries' aired yesterday at 8/7c. The show got a rating of 0.6 in the adults demo and 1.60 million people watched. A rating of 0.6 is respectable for a show on The CW, but for a premiere a little bit weak. Will the show catch on?

Source

Arrow (Renewed)

(05/09): 'Arrow' of course, gets another good rating. Just like last week the rating is a 0.9 in the all important demo.

(05/02): This week's 'Arrow' went back to its old rating of 0.9 in adults 18-49. A slight drop in the total viewers as well, with 2.89 million people tuning in to watch.

(04/25): After a slight break, 'Arrow' is back with a slightly higher rating of 1.0 in the all important demo, and a total of 3.1 million viewers.

(04/04): 'Arrow' is at a steady series low rating of 0.9 in the 18-49 demo, with 2.92 million viewers, slightly more than last week's episode got.

(03/28): Breaking even with the series low of 0.9 in adults 18-49 this week, the already renewed 'Arrow' dropped to 2.65 million total viewers.

(03/21): No drop for this week's 'Arrow', which got a rating of 1.0 in the all important demographic and a total of 3.02 million viewers.

(03/01): This week's episode of 'Arrow' got a rating of 1.0 in the adults 18-49 demo. In total 3.17 million people tuned in.

(02/21): A drop in the ratings for 'Arrow', scoring a rating of 0.9 in the 18-49 demo. 3.15 million people tuned in to watch.

(02/14): A couple of days after it got renewed, 'Arrow' grows a tenth in the adults 18-49 demographic. The episode rated a 1.1 and got 3.29 million people watching.

(02/11): In a move that is in no way surprising, except for the fact that it comes so early, The CW renews 'Arrow' for a second season. Also renewed today are 'Supernatural' and 'The Vampire Diaries'. The successful freshman series 'Arrow' gave the network the highest rating premiere since 2009, and has continued to deliver in the ratings ever since. No word on the number of episodes, but expect a full 22-episode second season.

(02/07): A slight rise of one tenth in the ratings for 'Arrow'. This week's episode scored a 1.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic. With a total of 2.96 million people watching, the viewer count was lower than last week however.

(01/31): 'Arrow' dropped a bit in the ratings, this episode got a 0.9 in the adults demographic and 2.97 million people watched the show. Still a really good score for a show on The CW.

(01/24): A steady rating for 'Arrow' this week; it scored yet another rating of 1.1 in the 18-49 demographic. A total of 3.14 million people tuned in to watch the series, slightly more than last week.

(01/17): The first 'Arrow' episode after the holidays managed to grow in comparison with the show's last original episode. This week's airing got a 1.1 in the 18-49 demo, while 3.03 million people were watching.

The first episode of 'Arrow' got a rating of 1.3 in the all important demo and 4.14 million people watched the show. Amazingly the second episode got the same rating, even though it is common for the ratings to drop quite a bit after the pilot. The current series low for 'Arrow' was only 0.3 lower than the series high, which is a 1.3. Thus the ratings of 'Arrow' weren't just high, they were very steady as well.

After just two episodes The CW made the decision to order a full season of 'Arrow'. A decision that proved to be good since the ratings didn't falter but stayed up. If 'Arrow' manages to keep up these ratings after the winter break this show will almost certainly be renewed, meaning this show moves to the Likely Renewal category.

Source

Hart of Dixie (Renewed)

(05/08): 'Hart Of Dixie' was steady at the 0.5 mark this week. Total viewers inched up to 1.19 million.

(05/01): 'Hart Of Dixie' shows why it's been renewed over 'The Carrie Diaries' by going up in the ratings from last week's series low by 25% to an 0.5 in the coveted demographic. Total viewers was 1.20 million.

(04/27): Not only 'Beauty and The Beast' was renewed by The CW, 'Hart Of Dixie' also gets another season.

(04/24): It looks like I was right in keeping 'Hart of Dixie' a Toss Up last week, as it dropped to a series low 0.4 in adults 18-49 this week. Total viewers was down to 1.1 million, not a series low. The 2012-13 season on The CW gets more and more interesting, as 'Hart Of Dixie' and 'The Carrie Diaries' are now at the exact same ratings levels. If I had to guess, I'd say that 'Hart Of Dixie' has a slight edge over 'The Carrie Diaries', but that is not a lot more than a hunch. Stay tuned!

(04/17): 'Hart of Dixie' drops a tenth in the demo to an 0.5 in adults 18-49, with 1.30 million viewers. Looking at previous seasons, it is very likely that two out of the three 'Beauty And The Beast', 'The Carrie Diaries' and 'Hart Of Dixie' will be renewed. For now, it looks like 'Hart Of Dixie' will be among those two renewals, but since it dropped in the ratings last night, even if it's only a tenth, it stays a Toss Up for now.

(04/10): This week's ratings matches the ratings of the previous episode. The show got a 0.6 in the all important demo and 1.2 million people tuned in.

(03/06): 'Hart of Dixie' still steady at 0.6. This week 1.5 million people tuned in.

(02/27): A steady 0.6 rating for 'Hart of Dixie' this week, with a total viewer count of 1.38 million.

(02/20): 'Hart of Dixie' goes back down to an 0.5 in adults 18-49. Total viewers inched down to 1.37 million.

(02/06): It's back to the ratings of 0.6 for 'Hart of Dixie'. Total viewer count this week was 1.44 million.

(01/30): A small decline in the ratings for 'Hart of Dixie' this week. It scored a rating of 0.5 in the 18-49 demo. 1.32 million people watched the episode. It is fair to say that 'Hart of Dixie' has continued to receive steady ratings this second season.

(01/23): 'Hart of Dixie's episode of last night got a rating of 0.6 in the all important demo. This rating is the same as last week's rating and as most of the other ratings of 'Hart of Dixie' this season. In total 1.45 million people watched the episode.

(01/16): For its first episode after the Christmas break, 'Hart of Dixie' got a steady rating of 0.6 in the 18-49 demographic. It managed to pull 1.37 million people to their TVs. 'Hart of Dixie's fate remains unclear, but for it to be renewed it could use some higher ratings.

'Hart of Dixie' started it's second season with a rating of 0.7 in the adults 18-49. This rating is just two tenths shy of the season low of the first season. The ratings of the second season, however, never did get below this season low. Until now the ratings of this season (except for the first episode) all were either a 0.5 or a 0.6.

It is hard to say just yet whether or not 'Hart of Dixie' will be renewed for a third season, the ratings are still indecisive. However, 'Hart of Dixie' has more chance of getting cancelled than renewed, unlike 'Beauty and the Beast'.

Source

Cult (Cancelled)

(04/11): The CW pulls 'Cult' off the air after seven episodes. 'Cult' has been struggling since the start. There is no immediate plan to air the remaining six episodes. The timeslot will be filled by reruns of 'The Carrie Diaries' and 'Oh Sit'.

(04/06): Adding 50% versus last week, 'Cult' is back up to the 0.2 in adults 18-49 it got before. Since the ratings are so low, it's hard to say how accurate they are, since it might have actually been an 0.14 last week and an 0.16 this week. It is only a matter of time before 'Cult' either gets pulled off the schedule or reaches the legendary status of being one of the few broadcast shows ever to get an 0.0 rating.

(03/30): 'Cult' drops to another series low, this week's rating is a 0.1 in adults 18-49 and 0.61 million viewers. There is no denying the impending cancellation.

(03/23): With another 0.2 in adults 18-49, 0.73 million viewers and no signs of improvement, 'Cult' is now certain to be cancelled. Why? 'Emily Owens, M.D.' doubled these numbers and still got axed.

(03/16): 'Cult' is steady in the coveted demographic. It scored an embarrassing 0.2 in adults 18-49, 0.72 million people tuned in.

(03/09): After the move to Friday, 'Cult' drops a tenth (or 33%) in the coveted adults 18-49 demographic. Now at an 0.2, with 0.68 million viewers, the question is how long before The CW's executives put this show out of its misery.

(02/28): In a desperate move, The CW swaps 'Cult' from its Tuesday timeslot with the Fridays at 9/8c hour of repeats. That means the network thinks that a repeat will get higher ratings than an all-new episode of 'Cult' on Tuesday (and rightfully so). For as long as 'Cult' still manages to stay on the air, it will now air on Fridays at 9/8c.

(02/27): The second episode of 'Cult' was no different from the first, with yet another 0.3 rating and 0.82 million viewers.

(02/20): 'Cult' premiered with an abysmal 0.3 in adults 18-49, while 0.86 million people tuned in. This makes the show a Likely Cancellation immediately. 'Emily Owens, M.D.' premiered with the same numbers, will 'Cult' last as long as that show did?

Source

Emily Owens M.D. (Cancelled)

The medical drama series 'Emily Owens M.D.' has a very bad start with only a 0.5 rating for the pilot and 1.67 millions of viewers who watched the pilot. After this first episode things got only worse, the episodes got an average rating of 0.3. After six grueling episodes of 'Emily Owens M.D.' The CW finally pulled the plug on the show. The last six episodes will air in the regular timeslot.

I'm glad to hear Arrow got picked up! As a DC Comics reader and a fan of Smallville, I have enjoyed the show so far.

I hope they pick up Beauty and the Beast! I'm completely addicted to it!

It is getting bad ratings, but given the state The CW is in, you might just get lucky, TL0426!

I got caught up watching Hart of Dixie twice this season. I liked it but it's on at a time when I can't usually watch what I want on TV, or I'm just not home.

Hi That Grrl,

It is a shame you can't watch Hart of Dixie on TV. Fortunately you can watch the show online.

Hi Jody,

I wish I had that power! Unfortunately, all I can do is tell you what the ratings are and what is likely to happen.

Hi Lia,

Unfortunately for you Emily Owens had very disappointing ratings from the get go. As you can see in the table at the top of the hub, the show was cancelled on the 29th of November so it will definitely not return, ever. But at least all 13 episodes will air.

Becca 3 years ago

I really enjoy hart of Dixie it's light hearted even when there is drama people in that town are normal. Will hate to see it go.

Andrea 3 years ago

I didn’t realize that this many shows were still waiting for renewals. I’m definitely rooting for Hart of Dixie and Beauty and the Beast to be renewed, though. I love those shows, and I watch them every week. I can’t watch them live because I work at DISH when they air, but I set them to record on my DVR. My DISH Hopper can record up to six shows at once during primetime hours, so I can record Beauty and the Beast and Hart of Dixie and my roommates are still able to record all their shows. I love that we don’t have to fight about what to record anymore.

Trice 3 years ago

Emily Owens was a good show!!! I feel bad that the CW didn't promote this show and didn't look at the time slot after this whole presidential campaign...it's sad to see this series go because I used to be a fan of this network and since deciding to cancel this one show has made me freaking upset! I'm going to miss this show as well as the CW

Robin Oatley profile image

Robin Oatley 3 years ago Author

@Andrea,

I always record a lot of shows too. I just don't have the time to watch TV every night, and of course many of my favorite shows are on at the same time. God bless the guy (or girl) who invented the DVR!

@Trice,

I agree that if The CW had promoted Emily Owens a bit more it might have still been around. The ratings of Emily Owens weren't that far off from shows that did get a full season. However, the fact that The CW airs new episodes even during the presidential campaign doesn't have to be a bad thing. Not everyone wants to watch those campaigns, and The CW is the only broadcast network that doesn't air that.

Leo 3 years ago

Love it!

And I think if it go for this new way ( E14 &15) it will get more and more fan around the world every day!

People watch it don't want a normal series "hot and cold" moments in the romance, or triangles, like we could see with Vince's ex-girlfriend! People want something new! What all people all the times wanted to see: The romance, the passion, the love between the Beauty and the Beast! When the Beast are not turned a Prince yet! Of course we need obstacles for this romance, but not usual obstacles! I'm sure the "responsible" are looking for the fans and will give them ( us) all we want! And this means keep the series HOT and have a new season!

I hate that shows aren't given a chance to get an audience. I hope they give Cult a few more weeks to gain momentum. I caught the pilot on Friday's repeat and am really looking forward to seeing how it plays out. It's much different from anything else on TV - the whole show within a show concept - and needs a chance. Of course nowadays if 10 million people don't watch the first episode it's considered a failure. :( That's what we get for having a plethora of channels nowadays instead of just the three big networks of the "olden days" of the early 80s.

Robin Oatley profile image

Robin Oatley 3 years ago Author

Rachel, I feel sorry for you and I hope you can find another show you like.

Alexis and Leo, I'm not watching Beauty and the Beast myself, but it is nice to see that you are enjoying it so much. Beauty and the Beast's ratings are at the same level as both Hart of Dixie and The Carrie Diaries. From those three and Cult, two shows will probably be cancelled to make room for new shows next fall. Because the ratings are so close together, and because Cult only aired one episode so far, it is next to impossible to predict which ones that will be.

Melissa, I think that will mostly depend on the second episode. If that one manages to stay around that 0.3, it will probably get some more episodes to gain momentum. However if the second episode drops in the ratings, there will be hardly anyone left watching and The CW will have no choice but pulling Cult off the air.

The 10 million you mention is a number that we hardly ever see anymore, except on CBS. And of course, renewals and cancellations are determined by relative ratings and not by absolute numbers.

NickysMom2003 profile image

Yes, my comment about "10 million" was sarcasm directed at the networks' inability to allow a new show to gain viewers. :-)

In that case you have a good point ;)

However, in their defense, the rating for the premiere is very often the highest rating a show will get in its first couple of seasons. People sample a show's pilot, and never tune in again if they don't like it, something that doesn't often happen to later episodes in the first season, especially not for serialized dramas.

So if the first ratings are horrible, and they drop even further in the second episode, chances are very slim that the show will pick up later..

I guess it just comes down to most viewers not giving the shows a chance to capture them. And therefore the networks don't give the shows time to capture the viewers; there's no point. So it's all our own fault! (Or more precisely, the Nielsen families' fault!)

Lauryn 3 years ago

I really hope they renew Beauty and the Beast. It's really the only show on CW I still watch. I loved Emily Owens and The Secret Circle. I was so upset the were cancelled. I don't have a good track record with CW shows :(

I love Arrow and I think it has been renewed. The only other one that I am hoping is renewed is Beauty and the Beast.

Robin Oatley profile image

Robin Oatley 3 years ago Author

Hi Lauryn and Laura,

Arrow has been renewed, you are absolutely correct. As you can see in the table at the top, it was renewed on February 11th.

Beauty and the Beast is more or less at the same level as Hart Of Dixie and The Carrie Diaries, rating-wise. Unfortunately for you, there is no way of saying (yet) which of those will make it and which won't. If Cult doesn't make it, which is likely, expect at least one of Beauty and the Beast, Hart of Dixie and The Carrie Diaries to be cancelled. If The CW decides to give 90210 a (shortened) final season, that may mean two of those three will have to go.

Thanks for reading and commenting!

I highly doubt the CW believes that repeats will fare better on Tuesdays at 9PM. In fact, they should do worse than they did on Friday as Tuesdays at 9PM is the worst slot on the network. I believe CW wants to save Cult and make it a new show at 9PM after Nikita. It may be part of a strategy to rebuild its Friday night audience since Supernatural has been moved to Wednesdays. Yes, Wednesdays are better, but Friday has suffered because of it. The Carrie Diaries was adjusted down from the ratings on the 4th. So it hasn't managed to match its season high of 0.7. I don't see Beauty and The Beast, The Carrie Diaries, or Hart of Dixie coming back. Nikita, Arrow, Supernatural, and The Vampire Diaries are the only sure fire renewals. Cult might get renewed because it's on Friday now. If it matches its ratings or draws a bigger audience, it'll get renewed. There's no other show that fits in the slot and they won't premiere a brand new show there next season. It'd be suicide. Since 90210 has been cancelled, it gives Cult an even better opportunity. 90210's ratings fared worse than Cult... 90210 had less viewers and a lower demo on several nights.

That's just my opinion. Thought I'd through in my two cents. Good writing, though I didn't agree on some things. :)

Hi CrazedNovelist,

Thanks for your input! Last Friday's repeat of The Vampire Diaries (high ratings, certain renewal) got an 0.2 and 0.51 million viewers. This Tuesday's repeat of Beauty And The Beast (mediocre ratings, toss up) got an 0.3 and 0.73 million viewers, which is 50% higher for both.

This proves that a repeat can do equally good in the Tuesdays at 9/8c timeslot as an original Cult episode, and a repeat of The Vampire Diaries might even do better. Of course, airing a repeat is cheaper (namely, free) than producing 42-minute original episode.

Since shows are allowed to do worse on Fridays than on other days could potentially save Cult, I agree. However, shows rarely increase in ratings in the first half of the first season, they only decline or stay steady. When a show is shipped off to Fridays (or moved at all), and ratings are low, viewers smell the anxiety on the network's side and abandon the sinking ship. They don't want to get more involved in a show that likely gets cancelled. Anything can happen, of course, but I don't think it is likely that Cult will survive.

What I don't really understand is that you seem to be confident that Cult with its 0.3's is coming back while you can't see any of Beauty And The Beast, The Carrie Diaries and Hart Of Dixie, which all double Cult's ratings, return. That means that the network has at least 6 (add Emily Owens, M.D., 90210 and Gossip Girl) dramas ending this season. That means they'll have to pick up 7 or 8 new dramas for next season (assuming 1 or 2 will fail right out of the gates). I just don't see that happening.

Anyway, I'm not saying that I'm all-knowing, this is just my interpretation of what's happening. I guess we'll see at the upfronts in May!

Thanks for reading and sharing your (interesting!) thoughts.

Hi BatB fan (and people considering signing this petition),

Be aware that almost every show that is in danger of cancellation has a dedicated fan base that starts petitioning to save the show. However, this only very rarely works.

I know of two interesting cases where it *did* work, the first being CBS' Jericho, where fans sent thousands of pounds of nuts to the network's headquarters (referring to a scene from the season 1 finale). The show got renewed for a seven episode second season, and was still cancelled after that.

The second one is The WB's Roswell, where fans sent tons of tabasco sauce to the network (referring to a running gag on the show). As a result, it got picked up for a second season but the focus of the show shifted, causing even more people to stop watching. The production company persuaded UPN to pick up a third season, putting Roswell in a package deal with Buffy The Vampire Slayer. After that third season, the ratings were so terrible that it finally was put to rest.

I have yet to hear of a show that was saved solely by an internet-based campaign. Perhaps if you can think of Beauty and the Beast's tabasco sauce, and convince people to send that in to The CW, it could make a difference. But that only happens very rarely, and when it does happen, the show still won't last a lot longer.

In conclusion: If not enough people watch a show, it will get cancelled. No matter how devoted the people that *do* watch are. If you still feel like signing that petition, I won't stop you. I just don't think that it will have any effect.

I totally agree with you in this case. I was a fan of Roswell. Eric Kripke ruined the second season. Its fans were devoted. Huge following in Japan.

Sign4lyf 3 years ago

I really really really hope that BATB is renewed. I've become so attached to it in such a short space of time & it would be a travesty if the Carrie Diaries or Hart of Dixie are chosen over it, I mean those shows are not even in the same league! I was a fan of Roswell too but we at least got 3 seasons of it & this show has so many places & story lines left to explore, the possibilities truly are endless;-)

Jo 3 years ago

I wonder if the CW TV knows how many people outside English speaking countries watch BATB online. I guess we are not taken into consideration in these ratings..... If we were the diagram would probably look differently....

Robin Oatley profile image

Robin Oatley 3 years ago Author

Hi Sign4lyf and Jo,

Beauty and the Beast is actually not doing very bad, compared to other The CW shows. So for now, I wouldn't worry too much. Of course its ratings aren't as good as Arrow's, but the ratings are somewhere around the average which is actually not very bad.

As for non-US people watching the show online; of course they do count as part of the fan-base, but they are in no way interesting for networks because they do not count for the advertisements. Networks receive their money from companies who advertise during commercials, and the amount is based on the amount of viewers who are in their target group (incidentally also the reason only viewers in the age of 18-49 count). Of course, foreign viewers do count when they're thinking about selling the show to foreign networks, but that doesn't generate nearly as much money as advertisements do. And companies who want to advertise on TV simply don't pay for viewers whom they know won't buy any of their products.

It's unfortunate that some shows never find and audience. Supernatural and Smallville each received high ratings. They were within the top three highest rated shows on the network... so... nope, not cancelled. Arrow is the second highest rated show on the CW right now. Emily Owens was dead last. So... it's about ratings, despite the integrity of the show.

WANT A SECOND SEASON FOR BATB, BEASTIES WILL KEEP FIGHTING TILL THE VERY END.

WriterFreak001 3 years ago

I really want Beauty and the Beast to be renewed!!! For the past 6 or so months (has it really been that long?!), I have almost put EVERYTHING aside for CW's "Beauty and the Beast." I think all of the Beasties can agree with me that we would personally admit ourselves into Insane Asylums if the show was cancelled. I have HIGH hopes for this show and am really sure it will be renewed but sometimes that doesn't happen.

BatB is the BEST show on TV in my opinion. Personally, I've lost interest in Vampire Diaries and do not watch any other CW show. I used to but the others pale in comparison to Beauty and the Beast.

Let's just say this: Beauty and the Beast is my lifeline. They better not hack it. :)

Beauty and the Beast MUST get a second season. Each episode just gets better every time. The chemistry between Vincent and Catherine is off the charts. The drama and suspense in each episode keeps you glued to your seat. The back half of the season has really kicked up a gear and it is really worth watching!

Batb4ever 3 years ago

I have watched the show from the beginning and i must say it started off weak, but has grown on me. I think it’s a great show with all the twists and turners the writers get in. Besides that Kristin Kreuk pointed out at wondercon, that she liked the fact, that these two people get to explore the relationship, though odds are against them. It’s not filled wite ep. going back and forth to “will they won’t they”. I tend to agree with her on that, cause I really do think that the different tv-stations needs to tell the story about love with all the obsticles, likewise their is in an normal relationship -. hopefully not so extreme.

Robin Oatley profile image

@Ashmorpot, It's very unlikely The Carrie Diaries and Beauty and the Beast will both be renewed. Currently it looks like The Carrie Diaries won't make the cut and BatB might be renewed.

@CrazedNovelist, You're right, networks only care about the money they'll make with a show. That's why they will only take the ratings in consideration when deciding to renew or cancel a show.

@WriterFreak001, macmith, batb4ever and Joannamaria, It looks like you're all in luck. It at least is doing better than The Carrie Diaries and Cult. The CW will have to keep some of its shows, which puts BatB in a better spot.

Like so many others I would like to see Beauty and the Beast get at least a second season. I am an author and pick one male and one female actor to think about while writing my novels. I have picked Jay Ryan to by inspiration for my third book. It would be a shame to pull this show as it gives the viewers an avenue of escape from the issues we face every day. It is pure entertainment and great fun to watch. We need to keep this show on the air!!!

The way the plot has thicken in Beauty and the Beast they have to give it a second season. It has a story line that could still evolve and be very interesting at the same time be addictive.

Why didn't you include TVD?

Robin Oatley profile image

Robin Oatley 3 years ago Author

Hi Anne,

I didn't include 'The Vampire Diaries' because when I started doing this sort of hubs I only discussed new series, starting their first season. I kept up to date with these series and the newer series. When I started, The Vampire Diaries was already in its second season and therefore I don't discuss this series.

That being said, I can tell you The Vampire Diaries has been renewed for a fifth season. There's also an attempt for a spin-off series. On April 25th a back-door pilot (meaning a normal episode which could become a spin-off series) is scheduled to air. This spin-off focuses on Klaus Mikaelson and the Original Family of vampires.

Hi Erin,

CrazedNovelist is right, Arrow has already been renewed because it has really high ratings. Apparently there are a lot of people who do like the show. Both Gossip Girl and 90210 have been cancelled due to disappointing ratings.

Thanks for reading and commenting.

erin 3 years ago

Part of the reason why the disappointing Raitings got started to began with the cw network didn't really fix the Nielsen raitngs on time so there was two cancellation for two different shows on the cw network and that was why GG and 90210 got canceled

The cw network should be fousing on renewing 90210 for a full season 6

and Bring back GG for a full season 7

Nkita never had a raiting hit? So there is a chance that GG and 90210 could be renewed back on the network with no disappointing raitngs

Robin Oatley profile image

Robin Oatley 3 years ago Author

What do you mean exactly by 'fixing the ratings', Erin? Also, I suspect The CW will be focused on the shows that are getting the higher ratings, and on which new shows will replace the cancelled ones. Usually, once cancelled, a show won't be back on TV for a long time, if it will be back at all.

Hi AHHHlex,

I'm afraid it's not looking very good for The Carrie Diaries right now. It still depends on other shows and the ratings still to come, but now that Cult has been cancelled The Carrie Diaries could very well be next on the list.

erin 3 years ago

Robin Oatley AHHHlex,

trying to fiqure out why the cw network is canceling two shows a ounce It is only because the cancellation bear and the network are somehow working With CBS where are these cw ratings are coming from My guess is CBS

Somehow CBS is canceling some of the cw shows but why would they do that

I just get upset!! CW gets me glued to GG and 90210 they just can't cancel it no way find a better time slot it's on Tuesday or Thursdays prime time

Robin Oatley profile image

Robin Oatley 3 years ago Author

Hi Erin,

I'm not sure what you are talking about. The ratings are measured by The Nielsen Company, which is independent from any of the networks. It is true that CBS and The CW are owned by the same parent company, but there is no way that CBS determines the fate of shows on The CW. The viewers do, by watching or not watching the shows.

In short: No matter how much you, as an individual, like the show, if the people, as a group, don't like it (or at least: don't watch it), that leaves the network with no choice but to cancel the show.

If you want to know more about how TV ratings work, read the series 'TV Ratings 101':

Hi Erin,

You are correct that Mark Pedowitz suggested in January that 90210 had a possibility of getting renewed for a sixth season. However at the end of February, that same Mark Pedowitz annouced that there would NOT be a sixth season and that the show would conclude its run this year. In fact, the very final episode will air tonight.

You have been able to watch the show for five seasons, which is more than many other fans of other shows have. The best you can do is realize that, enjoy tonight's final episode and then move on to another show.

can you please explain why 90210 got canceled from the cw network

can you please explain why GG got canceled from the cw network

I Understand that it got canceled from the low raitings but it seems that cw network had some issues with 90210 and GG and that was why two shows got cancled at ounce

Robin Oatley profile image

Robin Oatley 3 years ago Author

Hi Erin,

I'm sorry to disappoint you again but there is no conspiracy. The ratings of both 90210 and Gossip Girl were simply to low for the series to keep being profitable. Therefore the shows had to be cancelled.

erin 3 years ago

Robin Oatley

I Understand was it the cw network that canceled 90210 and Gossip Girls 90210 and Gossip Girls cast and Crew members didn't want to move on 90210 really wanted to continue the series on cw network could GG and 90210 be placed on a different network for example Soap network can place 90210 at 8pm with brand new seasons and brand new seasons for Gossip Girls at 9pm

Robin Oatley profile image

Robin Oatley 3 years ago Author

Erin,

Perhaps it is time that you get over the cancellations of Gossip Girl and 90210, which happened months ago. Simply too few people were watching the shows for them to be profitable to The CW or any other network. There is no way either of the shows will ever be back. I hope that you'll understand now that there is no conspiracy against these shows. Nor was there any reason for the network to cancel it other than too few people tuning in.

All TV shows get cancelled sooner or later, that's just how this business works. I hope you'll finally see that, and that you'll find another show you like.

I will be in tears if Nkita gets canceled Nkita better get renewed for a full season 5

Robin Oatley profile image

Robin Oatley 3 years ago Author

Erin,

Well in my opinion, if the season is short because it was planned that way, it does add to your viewing pleasure. After all, there are still a lot of unresolved issues that may yet be resolved in those episodes. If a season was cut short due to immediate cancellation (as happens at times with a new series), I agree that it may be rather pointless to continue watching. However, with Nikita, I do think it will have a point to watch the last few episodes, if only to know how things will be resolved in the end.

I'm afraid waiting for a full season will be a long wait, because it won't come.

Hi Erin,

I'll have to disappoint you, because I can't find an official statement from anyone (not The CW, not the studio, none of the actors) regarding the revival of either Gossip Girl nor 90210. That basically means that neither of the shows will return. Where did you get this information?

It's great that you like Supernatural (I do, too!) but 15 seasons is a stretch. A really big stretch. Only shows like CSI or NCIS, which are doing extremely good in the ratings, have a chance of achieving over ten seasons. Other shows rarely surpass that limit, so I think 15 seasons for Supernatural is not very likely.

Erin.... The Carrie Diaries was renewed for thirteen episodes because it is a midseason replacement. It is there to fill a spot for another thirteen episodes. If it continues to do well, it's possible Pedowitz will decide on twenty-two episode format. As of The Originals... it will be an initial thirteen until the network decides on ordering a "Back 9", making it a twenty-two episode season. It all depends on success. Thirteen is the minimum when ordering a show to series (by CW's preferences).

Robin Oatley profile image

Robin Oatley 3 years ago Author

Hi Erin and CrazedNovelist,

First of all, if you carefully read the press release through the link you provide, you can see that the name 'Gossip Girl' will be used for a real-life gossip segment on an entertainment newsmagazine. So no actual comeback of the The CW series Gossip Girl.

What I can't wrap my head around is why you won't be watching Nikita if you like it so much that you're so upset that it is ending. Why not enjoy it for as long as you can?

Regarding The Carrie Diaries and The Originals, CrazedNovelist is right. The Carrie Diaries will remain a midseason show, and new shows always start out with 13 and might end up with a back-nine if they perform well.

Finally, whatever you are suggesting for Kyle XY, it is not happening. Why on earth would The CW pick up a cancelled ABC Family show? And besides, Kyle XY lead actor Jean-Luc Bilodeau is now under contract at ABC Family for the comedy Baby Daddy (which is actually quite funny). And the other actors have new jobs as well.

When Nikita start to air the first season i loved it and then i continue to watch the second and the Third season. Nikita got renewed for a fourth season with 6 episodes and when it comes to having shows with a little short season i don't watch

ALL OF THE Kyle XY VIEWERS are upset with the cancellation too their are 2000 fans that say Bring Back Kyle XY

Erin,

You can actually find answers to most of your questions about cancellations and renewals on the website tvwatchus.com, where I post all my new information. As for Supernatural, I do not understand your reasoning of it getting 15 to 20 seasons simply because it was renewed for a ninth season. It isn't even sure if it will get tenth season after this, so why 15-20? That's quite a bold prediction based on solely the renewal for a ninth season.
