Robert DeNiro as Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver

"You talkin' to me? You talkin' to me? You talkin' to me? Then who the hell else are you talking... you talking to me? Well I'm the only one here. Who the f%#k do you think you're talking to? Oh yeah? OK." - Travis Bickle, Taxi Driver (1976)

Columbia Pictures, rated R, 113 minutes.

Directed By: Martin Scorsese

Cast:

Robert DeNiro - Travis Bickle

Cybill Shepherd - Betsy

Jodie Foster - Iris

Harvey Keitel - Matthew 'Sport' Higgins

Peter Boyle - Wizard

Albert Brooks - Tom

Domestic Box Office Gross: $21,100,000

Synopsis: Travis Bickle, a mentally unstable man with insomnia, becomes increasingly disconnected and disgusted as he drives his cab in New York. While trying to date a senate aid and save an underage prostitute Travis reaches his boiling point with a violent conclusion.

Fact: Robert DeNiro drove a cab for a month in preparation for his role.

Trivia: Bruce Springsteen was the inspiration for the you talkin' to me scene. Springsteen came up with it at a concert when he was bantering with the audience.

Movie Mistake: The flowers Travis burns in the sink reappear when he's putting money in an envelope.

My Take: What can I say? This is a classic from one of the greatest directors ever. This film made a lot of careers and has one of the most repeated lines (see quote) in cinematic history.

Definitely a classic and what is amazing is that it never won an Oscar despite being nominated.

Where would you rank Taxi Driver out of Scorsese's films?

That’s a hard question because for me Scorsese is the most consistent maker of great movies and even those which I don’t enjoy because of the storyline are usually better made than most movies.

I am going to have to say that "Taxi Driver" along with "The Aviator", "Goodfellas", "Raging Bull", "Mean Streets" and "Casino" are my favourite Scorsese movies and as such they all rank between positions 1 and 6 in my list depending on what one I watched last.

The only one, for me that I would switch out is Casino for the Departed. I felt Casino was a bad Goodfellas remake.
