The Most Awesome Locations to Shoot a Music Video
The best music videos are those that make a lasting impression on the viewer. Think about your favorite music videos of all time. You might remember the musician standing in the middle of the desert, walking along an aircraft carrier or standing in front of an abandoned building. The best locations are those that present something different to the person watching the video. Anyone can film a music video in a club, but it takes someone special to film in an out of the way location. Take a look at some of the following locations to see the best spots.
Cincinnati Subway Tunnels
Few people know that Cincinnati, Ohio once wanted its own subway system. The city actually built a large number of tunnels that run underneath the city. The money ran out before the project finished, but the tunnels still sit underneath some of the popular spots in the city. Many people gained access to the tunnels, which even have a few platforms still standing. This is a great spot to film a dark or dreary music video.
You might not think about state and national parks when you start looking for a music video location. These spots are a great idea because you can often get filming permits and gain access to the park for less than you could rent a house for shooting. Yellowstone is one of the largest parks in the country and full of potential locations. You can film as the geyser goes off in the background, film on one of the nearby mountains or head into the woods where no one will get in your way.
Niagara Falls sees millions of visitors arriving in the area every year. The amazing views of the Falls is something that no one can forget after seeing it once. The water crashing down the Falls is the perfect complement to a music video because it serves as a special and unique backdrop. The best part is that you don't even need to worry about singing because the crashing water covers up your voice. You can easily lip sync to the music and dub it in later.
If you want to film a video where people never sleep, head over to Lake Havasu. In the off season, this town looks like any other lakeside community. Visit the town during the spring break season and everything changes. Thousands of college students flock to the city every year. They rent boats, party on the water and rarely sleep. If you have a song about partying, playing or anything else that appeals to teens, this is where you need to go. You can get footage of the college kids partying that you cannot get anywhere else.
Lake Mead National Recreation Area
If you need something a little more low key, head over to the Lake Mead Recreation Area. This southwest landmark boasts a lake that once overflowed, creating dozens of odd attractions in the surrounding area. This is one of the only areas in the United States where you can film in a canyon, desert and then get shots of a huge lake. With boat rentals on the lake, you can easily rent a boat and get footage from the middle of the lake.
The best video location depends on what you want for your shot. Make sure that you pack correctly for the location of your choosing. Sunscreen and bottled water is important if you visit a hot location in the desert or one of the lakeside locations. As long as you pack right, you can stay healthy even while shooting your breakthrough music video.
