The Positive Influence of the Star Wars Prequels: Madoka Magica
Darth Vader in the Star Wars Prequels
Homura Akemi, the Darth Vader of Magical Girls
The Cultural Inlfuence of the Prequel Ttrilogy is Just Bashing and Ad Hominen Attacks on George Lucas?
The Star Wars Prequel Trilogy. According to the internet, they are the worst movies ever, except Revenge of the Sith; it felt the most like the old Star Wars. Look on YouTube or at most articles about the Prequels and the article consists of ripping the movies to shreds. So you could say that the only cultural influence the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy has is that it’s spawned an industry dedicated to throwing ad hominem attacks at George Lucas, the Prequel Trilogy and fans of the Prequels, constantly telling us we have “bad taste in movies”. Want a lot of traffic to your article or video, bash George Lucas and the Prequels, you’ll get traffic and profit!
Before heading into the article, you might want to watch the anime. You can view it legally for free on Crunchyroll in Japanese with English subtitles, or in the English dub, just pick English dub if you want it. You can also add it to your list on Netflix. The sequel Madoka Magica: Rebellion is only available legally on Netflix.
Gen Urobuchi "the Urobutcher" Influenced by the Prequels for Homura Akemi's Character Arc
So does that mean Gen, the “Urobutcher” Urobuchi has bad taste because he likes the Star Wars Prequels? He patterned his main character Homura Akemi, often called one of the greatest female leads of anime, after Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader, and specifically Prequel Trilogy Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader.
According to a translation of the Madoka Magica: Rebellion pamphlet interview, Gen Urobuchi was influenced by the Prequel Trilogy fall of Darth Vader for where he took his character Homura Akemi in the third movie. I'll go into this in a little bit.
If there’s any scene in particular that you’re looking forward to, please tell us.
Urobuchi: Actually, there’s a scene in the storyboards where Homura’s already gotten too scary! There’s parts of the script where Homura has already gotten “scarier”. Apparently Shaft is going to keep refining things to the very final stages, so it’s exciting waiting to see what the final touches will be.
How do you want the fans to enjoy “Rebellion?”
Urobuchi: Honestly, I think some will beautify it and some will reject it completely. These days, static characters who don’t change are popular, and if characters ever change even a little bit there’ll be people who’ll call that out-of-character and get angry. In this movie, Homura grows, and she changes. In the end, I’m a little worried as to whether people will accept a character like her. If they’ll think she’s OOC, or that she’s evolved. I’ll be happy if people accept that Madoka Magica is the kind of drama where characters grow and change like this. But that’s up to the viewers to decide.
Stories where characters grow and change are very traditional. Does this mean that Madoka Magica is conforming to archetype?
Urobuchi: Even in “Star Wars”, Anakin is a cute little kid in Episode I, but by Episode III he grows up to be Darth Vader. But you know, “that’s how stories are”. I think the choice of whether or not to accept that is up to the viewers.
It is very, very hard to talk about Puela Magi Madoka Magica, because the it might as well be called Walkiing Spoiler: The Anime.
Be forewarned, this article contains massive spoilers for the Madoka Magica anime series and the third movie Madoka Magica: Rebellion.
If you don't have time to watch the 12 episode series there are two recap movies available on Netflix, but I would recommend watching the anime over the recap movies.
If you have seen the anime and have not seen the movie, you will either love this or hate it.
The overview of the story and plot of Puella Magi Madoka Magica is for Star Wars fans who aren't into anime and have never seen the anime. Although Madoka Magica is well known among the anime community, it has never been aired on the Toonami Adult Swim block to receive mainstream attention from non anime fans.
Setting the Stage for Newcomers to Madoka Magica:
Anakin Skywalker, the Hero With No Fear, brave Jedi Knight and best friend of Obi-Wan Kenobi, begins to have dreams about his secret wife, Padmé Amidala dying in childbirth. In a desperate attempt to save her life, he turns to Palpatine, the secret Sith Lord Darth Sidious, searching for a way to save her from certain death.
In the Anime, Puella Magi Madoka Magica, we follow a young girl named Madoka Kaname, who is just an ordinary girl. She lives with her parents and little brother Tatsuya in Mitakihara City, Japan.
She spends time with her friends, Sayaka MIki and Hitomi Shizuki. One day, a mysterious transfer student named Homura Akemi arrives at her school. And in a mysterious conversation, Homura told Madoka to treasure the life she currently lives, her friend and family, and admonishes her not to change her life for anything. To stay as she is, forever. Later on that day, she discovers an injured bunny-cat like creature called Kyubey, who is being hunted down by Homura for unknown reasons. She and her friend Sayaka Miki rescued from a Witch's labryinth by Mami Tomoe, a Magical Girl.
Magical Girls hunt Witches, in exchange for having one wish granted by Kyubey.
In a glorious deconstruction of the magical girl genre, they can actually die, this being shown in the third episode when Mami Tomoe, who was played up as being one of the main characters, is actually a red shirt who gets her head bit off, quite literally!
Sayaka Miki visits Kyosuke Kamijo and after a rather uncomfortable hospital visit where he angrily yells at her that he doesn't want to be reminded that he can't play the violin anymore, Sayaka decides to have Kyubey grant her wish to heal his arm. Her first act as a Magical Girl is to rescue Madoka and Hitomi from a Witch's labrynth.
Later, she surprises Kyosuke by giving him his violin and listening to him play in an impromptu performance.
Madoka is worried for Sayaka Miki and begs Homura Akemi to become friends with her. But Homura tells her, "A person becomes naïve if they're too kind. Careless if they're too bold. And no matter how hard you try to protect others, there's no gratitude. Those who can't comprehend such things aren't fit to be magical girls."
After her wish is granted and she gets to see Kyosuke play again, Sayaka and Madoka head out to hunt Witches and run into another Magical Girl, Kyoko Sakura. Kyoko challenges Syaka to fight, belittling her "hero of justice" philosophy and they have a spectacular fight, that ends in a draw when Homura shows up to save Sayaka Miki for her own reasons.
Homura makes a deal with Kyoko that she'll handle Sayaka and Kyoko can have the city if she'll help her take down Walpurgisnacht, a powerful Witch that will come to Mitakahara city soon. Kyoko decides to pick another fight with Sayaka right as she's trying to visit Kyosuke.
Meanwhile Madoka's mom Shunko Kaname, like Yoda gives advice to a troubled person, unfortunately, it's not good advice.
Yoda gives Anakin the worst advice about his premonitions, While the, "Careful you must be when sening the future, Anakin. "Fear of loss isthe path to the Dark Side", is good advice, "Death is a naturial part of life." Folowed up by the worst emotional advice ever, "Rejoice for those who transform into the Force. Mourn them, do not, miss them do not."
Unfortunately, Anakin is focusing on the emotional advice and not the more important advice about "Train yourself to let go of everything you fear to lose."
That's not really something you can train anyone to do, Yoda!
Madoka's mother Junko Kaname gives good advice to her daughter for the most part, until she says, "If the only way to help was to do something drastic would you do it?"
"Yeah," Madoka replies.
"Then you shoud do something wrong," Junko tells her.
Excuse me, WHAT?! While this sounds nice, Junko is drinking alcohol at the moment, I wonder if she's giving her daughter this advice half drunk!
"If she's so focused on what she thinks is right, you should do something wrong might snap her out of it."
This is not the advice you should give to your kids to deal with their friends problems.
Madoka inturrupts Kyoko and Sayaka's confrontation and then Madoka takes Sayaka's Soul Gem and thows it off the bridge. It is then that the girls discover that the Soul Gem is just that, your soul put into a gem inexchange for becoming a magical girl, done to you withiout your permission, by the bunny cat alien from Hell. It's a Soul Jar.
Magicial Girls are basically indestructable, can recover from any injury as long as their Soul Gems aren't broken and they continue to purify them with Grief Seeds.
Anakin Sywalker's wish to save Padme, sounds good to him at the time, but he doesn't get what he bargained for at all and it's entirely his fault. He's like Sayaka, but I'm comparing him to Homura and you will see why as the story progresses.
Sayaka Miki's mental state continues to deteriorate as she no longer considers herself to be human. It doesn't help that Kyubey uses her Soul Gem to torture her by showing her what it would be like to be gutted by a spear, as exposition!
Kyioko takes her to her father's church and explains to her that the wish she had for everyone to listen to her father's sermons, even though they were different from the Bible, caused him to believe that al his work was for nothing when they were coming to his church because of her wish, not beause they believed him. He killed her family and himself, leaving her alone. That's why she believes in only using magic for herself.
Anakin Skywalker believes that what he's doing is right for Padmé, but he never asked her what she really wanted, and when she finally did tell him what he wanted, he didn't care anymore, and he lost what he truly wanted: to be with her and the baby,
It gets worse for Sayaka when Hitomi, her friend, confesses that she has feelings for Kyosuke. She tells Sayaka that she can either confess her own feelings to Kyosuke within a day, or she'll tells him how she feels instead.
Even though Anakin is the basis for Homura Akemi, he has a lot of Sayaka in him. He's afraid and angry when he confronts Obi-Wan on Mustafar screaming, "You will not take her from me!" Sayaka and Anakin feel like the person they love is being "stolen" from them, where Sayaka falls into deeper depression, Anakin lashes out in a rage.
She ends up crying on Madoka's shoulder, confessing she regretted saving Hitomi.
"I'm going to lose Kyosuke to Hitomi! And there's nothing I can do about it now! Because I'm-I'm already dead! I'm a zombie! I can't ask him to hold me if I'm like this! I can't ask him to kiss me!"
Sayaka continues to lash out, taking her rage out on Madoka, and after running away. Homura finds her and attemps to "help" her by giving her a free Grief Seed, but Sayaka rightly states that Homura doesn't want to help her.
Homura confesses that yes, she's only helping Sayaka because of Madoka. Homura threatens to kill her if she makes Madoka suffer anymore, Kyoko manages to rescue her before she dies.
Madoka is troubled by Sayaka running away, and has a conversation with Kyubey, and just whe she's about to make a contract with Kyubey to save Sayaka, Homura stops time and fills him with bullets, beautiful, beautiful bullets! The author of this article has, with hateful affection, nicknamed him "Douchebey".
Madoka leaves to search for Sayaka as Homura, in an unexpected display of emotion, begs her not to go. Once Madoka is gone, Kyubey reveals he has multiple bodies...and eats himself!
He reveals that he figured out what her power was: time manipulation, and that she's not from the current timeline. Homura is a time traveller. And she's going to stop the incubator before he can make a contract with Madoka.
Kyoko finds Sayaka who has complely given into dispair and the final twist of the Soul Gem is revealed: Soul Gems turn into Grief Seeds, Magical Girls turn into Witches.
Magical Girl Sayaka Miki is now the Witch Oktavia von Seckendorff.
I find it fascinating that in Star Wars, Jedi always become Sith, but only one Sith has ever become a Jedi. Homura does something like this too, but I'll reveal that when discussing the movie.
Kyoko Sakura attemps to turn Sayaka back to normal with the help of Madoka after she asks Kyubey if it's possible fo do it. He doesn't say it is, but he doesn't say it isn't either.
Palpatine hints to Anakin that he can save Padmé. He later says that "Together, we'll uncover the secret" which hints that he doesn't really know the secret, but if Anakin helps him, they'll learn it together.
Palpatine, like Kyube, tells a lot of half truths, and lies by omission constantly.
Kyubey does grant iwshes, but he doesn't tell the girls he's ripping their souls out of their bodies to do it. He also doesn't tell them they'll become Witches if they fall into despair, or why he needs to eat Grief Seeds.
Padmé and Obi-Wan try to save Anakin, but fail, much like Madoka and Kyoko try to save Sayaka, and fail. But unlike Padme who dies in childbirth still believing in Anakin, Kyoko kills herself along with Sayaka, so she "It's okay now, because I'm with you, Sayaka," in one of the saddest death scenes in anime.
And Kyubey is happy, because it was part of his plan all along to get rid of all the other Magical Girls so that Madoka has to become a Magical Girl to protect everyone.
Anakin Thinks Seeing the Future is Bad, Homura Lives her Future, Which is Worse!
Then we see Homura in the most amazing 25 minutes of backstory in all of anime.
Homura Akemi was a shy, introverted transfer student, she met Madoka on her first day of school and was later rescued by Madoka and Mami who revealed that they are Magical Girls.
Then Walpurgisnacht arrives, and Mami dies in battle (again). Madoka takes the enormous Witch one on one, she wins but sacrifices her life in the end.
Homura Akemi, grieving over the lifeless body of her best friend, makes a wish that she could meet Madoka all over again, but instead ofd Madoka protecting her, she would protect Madoka.
Kyubey grants her wish, giving her the power to rewind time back to the month when she woke up in the hospital and went to school to meet Madoka. And she tries to save Madoka from dying.
Key word is tries. And Fails, just like Anakin.
Like Homura Akemi, Anakin Skywalker can see the future, but unlike Homura, he cannot rewind time to try prevent the future, as Homura keeps time looping back into the past to try to prevent Madoka from making a contract with Kyubey.
Anakin tries to prevent Padmé's death and fails. He can't fight his dreams and her fate, but he tries, and inadvertently plays a role in her death
Homura too, is fighting fate, the fate of Magical Girls. The first time she tries to save Madoka, Madoka turns into a Witch. Now we don't see all of Homura's time loops, but according to extra sources, she's been in a time loop for seven years since she was 14!
And every time Homura Akemi resets the timeline, it gets worse, in another loop, we see her try to tell the other Magicla Girls that Soul Gems turn into Grief Seeds, no one believes her until they see it for themselves when Sayaka becomes a Witch (again). Mami Tomoe does not take it very well, and tries to kill everyone, only to be shot down by Madoka.
They defeat Walpurgisnacht, but they're about to turn into Witches, but Madoka saves Homura with Sayaka's Grief Seed and begs her to make sure she won't contract with Kyubey when she goes back in time. She also asks for a mercy kill so she won't turn into a Witch.
Anakin promises Padmé that she won't die in childbirth. Homura promises to save Madoka from dying or turning into a Witch. And in the end, neither of them can keep their promises to the one they love.
Whether the love between Madoka and Homura is romantic it depends on who you ask the yuri (same sex female romance) shippers squee and say yes, but many view them as being very close friends, but either way, you'd do something to save your best friend no matter what.
Homura tries to defeat Walpurgisnacht again, but she fails, and we discover that Madoka defeated her with one shot, only to turn into the Witch Kriemhild Gretchen, and beingso powerful she'll destroy the Earth in 10 days, Kyubey's happy because being an Incubator, he has quota to save the universe from heat death. And so Homura resets time to the current one shown in the anime.
Will you, A Star Wars Fan, Watch Madoka Magica?See results without voting
Kyubey tells Homura that every time she's reset the timeline to save Madoka Kaname, she's made her Karmic Destiny, the significance of Madoka's life more and more important, and becaue she's made so many time loops, she's made Madoka the most powerful Witch ever.
Kyubey has a conversation with Madoka when he tells her the Inciubators need Grief Seeds to stave off the heat death of universe. Kyubey also explains that inciubators granting wishes has changed human history. He's also an alien species that has no emotion whatsoever. He also views human emotions as a mental illness.
This is eerily similar to the operahouse scene in Revenge of the Sith, Palpatine doles out Sith Lore about Dath Plagueis the Wise, and indicates that the Sith can create life, similar to how Kyubey insists that Inciubators contracting Magical Girls created modern life as Madoka knows it.
Kyubey says, "So whenever you feel like dying for the sake of the universe, call me, I'll be waiting!"
Sheev Palpatine says, "Learn to know the Dark Side and you can save your wife...from certain death,. Use my knowledge, I beg of you!"
Homura tells Madoka everything, and even though Madoka is confused, Homura still wants to protect her.
She throws everyting, and I mean everything at Walpurgisnacht: rocket propelled grenades, bombs and even a surface to air missiles at it, and she still can't win.
While Anakin is trying to defeat Obi-Wan because he hates him. Homura is trying to defeat Walpurgisnacht to protect Madoka.
Another trait that Anakin Skywalker and Homura Akemi share is that over their story arcs, they become more selfish as the story contnues. In The Phantom Menace Anakin selflessly gives to Padmé, Qui-Gon and Jar Jar without any thought of reward. In Revenge of the Sith, Anakin selfishly tries to save Padmé because it's not about her, it's really about him.
Homura's circumstances for becoming selfish are more complicated, but I'll talk about that when we get to the third Movie Madoka Magica Rebellion.
Just as Homura's about to give into despair, Madoka Kaname shows up and rescues her.
Interestingly in Attack of the Clones, Padmé rescues Anakin in an unconventional way, but still intervenes when it looks like there's no way out. In leaving Jar Jar behind (no, I do not hate Jar Jar Binks) he's able to call for the creation of the Clone army that rescues Anakin Padmé and the Jedi, so in an indirect way, she saved him. Although, Madoka's way of saving Homura from despair is to show up right when Homura was about to give up and transform into a Witch.
Madoka makes a wish, and it's an astounding one: To erase all Witches before they were born, past present and future. She rewrites the laws of her universe and becomes a Goddess. She's the only character I know of who has nuked their own despair, by shooting it in the face with a giant bow and arrow! And since she is just a concept now, no one will remember her. Madoka leaves Homura, but not before giving her the pink ribbin she wears, much like Anakin giving Padmé the Japor snippet pendant to remember him by,.
No one will remember her now, except Homura and Madoka's little brother Tatsuya, who remembers her just because he loves her, AAWW!
Homura fails to save Madoka, and she continues to feel guilty, but she'l keep fightig on for the ideal that is Madoka Kaname.
The Madoka Magica anime ends on a bittersweet note, but it's bittersweet, and in a way, it's like the Original Trilogy where it ends on a happy note. But unlike George Lucas, Gen Urobuchi is not known for his happy endings (Madoka Magica has the happiest ending he's ever written) , instead he's known for bittersweet and downer endings and deconstructing heroisim (Fate/Zero), power (Kaimen Rider Giam), Japanese Culture (Psycho-Pass), in the Madoka Magica anime series and movie he deconstructs love and selflessness.
I'll be comparing and contrasting Kiritsugu Emiya and Anakin Skywalker in another article.
Star Wars and Madoka Magica Started Religions!
Star Wars is belved by it's fans, so much so that Star Wars is treated like a religion, and some people have put down "Jedi" as their religous affiliation.
Among anime fans there are "Anime Religions" such as Haruhiism (The Melanchoy of Haruhi Suzumiya, an anime where a high school student is God, but she doesn't know it, and her friends who do know it try to keep her from resetting the universe when she's unhappy).
And now there is the Church of Madoka, followers regard Madoka as a Goddess. And yes, anime fans are trying to get a star named after her.
The parallels for all these fandoms is rather fascinating.
The Role of Palpatine and Kyubey:
Palpatine and Keyubey are very similar, the both want someone for thier own uses. In the case of Palpatine, he wants Anakin as his apprentice because Anakin is strong in the Force. Kyubey wants Madoka to become a Magical Girl and later a Witch, because the energy she would produce transforming into a Witch would stop the heat death of the universe because of her Karmic destiny.
But why is Homura compared to Darth Vader and not Madoka? Well, Madoka selfllessly uses her wish to become a concept that destroys all Witches, past, present and future, she is complerely selfless, and although Homura is initially selfless, timelooping for years, she starts when she's 14 years old and loops one month until she's 22 in an attempt to stop Madoka from dying or becoming a Witch, she misses her friend and feels like she failed because she could never save Madoka, in the end, Madoka saved her, again.
Homura finally snaps in Madoka Magica Rebellion, but Kyubey still plays the role of Palpatine, the friendly but subtling manipulating every Magical Girl he meets. For Homura, dangling the promise of being able to save Madoka from dying. For Syaka, healing the boy she's in love with, pruposely omitting what Soul Gems actually are. For Kyoko Sakura, that she can save Sayaka after she's become a Witch, when it's impossible, but he never says that it's not possible either.
Kyubey and Palpatine are both master planners who are very skilled at manipulating people to do what they want.
Palpatine manipulates the entire Repiublic by setting himelf up as Chancellor, created a fake war to distract the Jedi and purposely separated Anakin and Obi-Wan and Anakin on multiple occasiions. Anakin was purposely seperated from Obi-Wan to tempt him with his forbidden attatchment to Padmé, the second time was to seduce him, tempting him with the power of the Dark Side.
Kyubey constantly puts her in situations where only he can bail her out with a contract to become a magical girl. Homura keeps thwarting him, but eventually, he gets what he wants, in multiple timelines!
A Battle Between the Villain and the Mentor Figure
While Anakin and Obi-Wan fight a personal battle over their ideals and the damage they've done to each other. It's also a fascinating battle over Anakin's misunderstanding regarding both Padme and Obi-Wan's loyalty to the Republic and the Jedi.
Anakin believes the Jedi were plotting to take over thanks to Palpatine's manipulations.
In the third movie Madoka Magca Rebellion, Homura suspects that the world she lives in is wrong, because she remembers it being different when Madoka became a concept to save Magical Girls from despair. She begins to suspect she's trapped in a WItch's labyrinth and suspects Bbebe, a little creature who is Mami's companion since she remembers Bebe as Charlotte, the Sweets Witch, the one who bit Mami's head off!
Mami rushes to Bebe's defense and refuses to believe Homura about the false Mitakihara City, and they begin to fight.
An interesting parallel, just as the Anakin and Obi-Wan fight was the most anticipated fight of the Star Wars Prequels, the Homura Akemi and Mami Tomoe fight is something all the fans of Madoka Magica wanted to see.
And just as the Mustafar Battle of the Heroes was the finest lightsaber fight in Star Wars, so the Homura Akemi and Mami Tomoe fight is the finest fight in the Madoka Magica franchise.
What George Lucas did with lightsabers, Gen Urobuchi did with gun fu, the fighters even grapple with each other during their respective fights!
To quote science fiction reviewer SFDebris from Channel Awesome: "This scene looks at Yoda fighting the Emperor and goes, "Are you two fighting? That's adorable!"
But Anakin's fight didn't involve an epic gambit involving him shooting himself in the head like how Homura Akemi almost won against Mami Tomoe, but Mami used a ribbon double during her entire fight with Homura.
Like Anakin, her arrogance caused her to lose the fight, but unlike Anakin she doesn't lose any body parts.
While the confrontation between Anakin and Obi-Wan takes place near the end of Revenge of the Sith, while the confrontation for Homura and Mami takes place a little bit before the halfway point of the movie.
Homura Akemi Vs. Mami Tomoe
Darth Vader and Homura Akemi: Falls From Grace Because Of Love:
He had never dreamed there was this much pain in the universe.
Physical pain he could have handled even without his Jedi mental skills; he'd always been tough. At four years old he'd been able to take the worst beating Watto would deliver without so much as making a sound.
Nothing had prepared him for this.
He wanted to rip open his chest with his bare hands and claw out his heart.
"What have I done?" The question started as a low moan but grew to a howl he could no longer lock behind his teeth. "What have I done?"
He knew the answer: he had done his duty.
And now he couldn't imagine why.
When I die, Palpatine had said, so calmly, so warmly, so reasonably, my knowledge dies with me...
Everywhere he looked, he saw only the face of the woman he loved beyond love: the woman for whom he channeled through his body all the love that had ever existed in the galaxy. In the universe.
He didn't care what she had done. He didn't care about conspiracies or cabals or secret pacts. Treason meant nothing to him now. She was everything that had ever been loved by anyone and he was watching her die. -Revenge of the Sith by Matthew Stover
Anakin falls to the Dark Side because he believes the power will save Padmé from death because he can't live without her.
Homura discovers that she's the one who created the labyrinth, and after killing Kyubey multiple times, much to this author's personal glee (the subtitles are in the captions of the YouTube Video), she discovers the incubators have forcibly turned her into a Witch to try to control Madoka.
Madoka, Mami, Sayaka, Bebe, and Kyoko, break into Homura's Labyrinth and try to rescue her Witch form, Homulilly. Madoka manages to reach her.
"I"m sorry! I'm so weak! I JUST WANTED YOU BACK WITH ME!" Homura sobs, "I didn't care what I had to do. I'd commit the worst sins for one more chance...EVEN IF IT TURNED ME INTO A MONSTER! It wouldn't matter, as long as I could have you back."
Together Madoka and Homura use their bows to shoot the glorious oblivion out of all the incubators and blow them to lovely smithereens. But because Homura's Soul Gem was cracked, she has to go to be with Madoka forever as part of the Law of Cycles that Madoka established that instead of turning into Witches they go to be with her.
But then Homura decides, "I'Ve had it I deserve to have Madoka here with me, physically, after everything I've done for her. And then Homura proceeds to steal Madoka's Goddess powers away from her, rewriting the universe and becoming a demon. Because she can't live without Madoka.
Many fans weren't expecting this. Gen Urobuchi actually wanted a happy ending, but the series director, Akiyuki Shinbo wanted the last minute twist.
Homura Akemi gets everything she wanted, she steals Madoka's Goddess powers, gets to keep her best friend with her and she bends Kyubey over her knee and spanks him, figuratively, as now he works for her.
Unfortunately for Anakin Skywalker, his fall from grace ended badly for him, he was too selfish and blamed others for all his mistakes.
You killed her because, finally, when you could have saved her, when you could have gone away with her, when you could have been thinking about her, you were thinking about yourself...
It is in this blazing moment that you finally understand the trap of the dark side, the final cruelty of the Sith—
Because now your self is all you will ever have. -Revenge of the Sith by Matthew Stover
And while Darth Vader was able to redeem himself and become Anakin Skywalker again before he died. I don't know if Homura Akemi will redeem herself anytime soon, mainly because Studio Shaft and Gen Urobuchi haven't (as of this article) written a sequel to Madoka Magica Rebellion.
I can only hope for Homura to be redeemed and once more become the selfless Homura Akemi who was willing to suffer the fate of Sisyphus to save her best friend because she loved her.
But not before some mind-blowing action sequences that make my head explode with how awesome and amazing they look.
So Star Wars Prequel Fans, Watch and See a Fantastic Anime Influenced by the Stories We Love!
With all the people disparaging the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy, just remember, without the Star Wars Prequels, we wouldn't have a wonderful, amazing, tragic character like Homura Akemi. And if anyone says the Prequels don't influence anything like the Original Trilogy did, just tell them that one of the best desconstructions in anime was influenced by the Prequels. Remember, without the Tragedy of Darth Vader, there wouldn't be the Tragedy of Homura Akemi.
I find it fascinating the people who don't like the Prequel Trilogy do not like what happened to Homura Akemi in Madoka Magica Rebellion, they must have subconciously noticed the parellels to the Prequel Trilogy without knowing it.
Madoka Magica has won dozens of awards including won the Television Award at the 16th Animation Kobe Awards, 12 Newtype Anime Awards, the Grand Prize for animation in the Japan Media Arts for 2011, and many other awards. It was also submitted to the Oscars for Best animated Film in 2013 (it didn't end up on the list, but that it was submitted at all is awesome!). Not bad for something influenced by what the internet calls "the worst movies ever"!
Without Anakin Skywalker, I woudln't have one of my favorite female characters of all time, Homura "Hommando" Akemi. All hail, Lord Vader, all hail Homerun Chan!
This anime is your weaponn, watch it, enjoy it and use it to show that there are many good things that came from the Prequel Trilogy, and not just that George Lucas gave us a fascinating tragic story. His story influenced another well done tragedy that has amazing characters as well.
Now Studio Shaft, Gen Urobuchi, where's my much needed sequel to Madoka Magica Rebellion?!
