The Salient Gentleman-Flash Fiction
The Seemingly Perfect Man
The Salient Gentleman
Leaning over the lovely oak table at the bed and breakfast, my love kissed me softly on the lips. The weekend stay at the Burwell Bed and Breakfast solidified our relationship that had been growing more serious over the past year. It was a storybook romance-He was my heaven on earth. I never thought my prince charming would ever show up. Here we were at the most prominent B& B in the Midwest. Paul made sure everything was perfect for the romantic get away. Brunette hair and handsome face that looked angelic and pure. He was my perfect man. Holding doors open everywhere we went, a rose given on every date, and words that most women long to hear. "I love you Laura and want to spend the rest of my life with you."
This salient man was a doctor of Pediatrics which was one of the things that impressed me when we first met. He was intelligent, loving and kind. When it came to love making, he was a master of pleasure. The waitress brought out the last course of the extravagant meal. It was our favorite dessert-Cherry Cheesecake Jubilee. " Laura, I'll let you do the honors." I opened up the silver chafing dish admiring the vanilla white cheesecake and cherry red fruit on top. Shining on top of the cherries was something I couldn't make out. "Paul, there's something on top of the cheesecake. Should we send it back?" "Ah- well honey, why don't you look a bit closer" he said, as he giggled." I let my finger lift up on the shiny vessel and let out a scream that women from around the world would recognize. With my hands shaking, I looked closer at this beautiful diamond. It was at least one carat and inlaid in a beautiful gold band, It was littered with not one, not two, but four diamonds. "Paul Murphy, it's absolutely gorgeous." "Well please my love, don't leave a man in love waiting. Now down on one knee and the entire staff at the bed and breakfast looking on, he said It. The words I'd been longing to hear since our relationship became serious. "Laura, will you marry me and make me the happiest man on earth?" " Oh Paul, of course I'll marry you. Your the man of my dreams."
The Perfect Weekend Comes to an End
Sad that the weekend had to end, Paul and I packed up our luggage and headed out to our separate cars since we both had to drive to work in the morning. Paul finished packing his toiletries as I went out and loaded up my car. Thinking I'd left my cell phone in his car from the night before, I went to the back seat where I thought I left it. Pondering why it wasn't there, I surmised Paul must have moved it to the trunk for safe keeping.
There you are" she said, and grabbed the phone. She couldn't help but notice something sticking out of from a pile in the corner. Underneath some towels was a bible and a priest habit with the entire black and white uniform. She pulled out the bible and turned it to the first page. It was signed, 'Property of Father Paul Murphy' -St. Therese Catholic Church. "My dream man is a priest!" she exclaimed, then fell to the ground with a thud.
