My Thoughts on Why The Secret Circle was Cancelled
The CW Laying the Smackdown
This news was actually pretty shocking to me. After just one season, The Secret Circle has been canceled by the CW. The Secret Circle aired directly after The Vampire Diaries on Thursday nights and was also based on books written by L.J. Smith. Fans of the books, like myself, had high hopes for this series. However, it seems to have bombed in the ratings. But why didn’t they give it another season?
I am not comparing The Secret Circle to these shows. Buffy, Dr. Who and Supernatural are all really epic and I'm glad they got a second chance. These are simply examples of shows that had rough first seasons, though The Secret Circle's was definitely rougher.
The Curse of Season One
I’ve seen this happen a lot with new television shows. The first season stinks, but it gets better over time. For example, I felt like the first season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer was pretty weak compared to the rest of the series. It was still great and drew in plenty of viewers, but it was nothing compared to the following seasons. The acting was sub par, it had too many filler episodes and the budget was too low.
Doctor Who’s return to television in 2005 after a hiatus that began in the 80’s was also terrible and really cheesy at first. It had an obviously limited budget and was chock full of filler episodes with very little story until the last few episodes. Season two was when it really took off and it now has a huge fanbase.
One last example is Supernatural. I’ve often heard people tell potential viewers to just skip the first season. I’m sort of against this line of thinking, but I kind of understand it in this case and also with Dr. Who. It’s just so bad that you almost don’t need to watch it to get into the series. Supernatural’s first season is really episodic, just like Dr. Who and Buffy, with little to no story until you get to the end.

The Correct Answer Is...
If you chose all of the above, you are correct! In my opinion, anyway. I’ll break it down for you:
Flawed Plot The Secret Circle started off pretty strong as far as the story went. I felt like it was going in the right direction until they bound the circle. When they did this, they lost the ability to do magic on their own. I mean, what? It became a show about witches that couldn’t really do any magic. The parents’ obsession with crystals was more annoying than anything. The witch hunter storyline was mediocre and not really exciting. It was quite episodic and the storyline was weak and sporadic at best until you got to the last leg of the journey.
Bad Characters Adam was always the good guy to the point that he was boring. Diana was sickeningly sweet. Faye was the bad girl with a good heart, which is accurate in comparison to the books but exacerbated to the point that it’s annoying instead of endearing. Melissa was bland and her story arcs were so out of character. Jake was the tormented hero with a dark past that was also overdone. Cassie was on a mission.... constantly. She had almost no personality aside from being way too determined. I could go on, but this basically sums it up.
Unconvincing Love Story From the very beginning, Cassie and Adam had zero chemistry on the screen. Sure, their characters were supposed to be inexplicably drawn to each other, but I never really believed it. I wasn’t moved by their interactions. I didn’t feel like there was any passion there. I wasn’t sad when they broke up because they never really felt like a couple to me from the beginning.
It might seem like I hated the show, but that’s far from the truth. I believe it had a lot of potential regardless of its flaws. The Secret Circle had all of the elements of a fantastic series in place, it just didn’t really use them. A show based on a circle of teenage witches is awesome, but not so much if the witches can’t really do magic. The season finale actually solved a lot of the problems that the show had up to that point and it could have been successful if they took a chance and allowed a second season. The season one finale of The Secret Circle was great, but it’s a terrible series finale because it left too many questions unanswered and plot lines unresolved. I believe that it was a sad day in television history when The Secret Circle was canceled because it was never given the chance to thrive.
