The Top 10 Most Evil Disney Villains

There are so many things that make a great Disney movie, but the most important is to have a great villain. Sure, the heroes and princess’ make the merchandiser’s drool, but what good are these saccharine sweethearts without someone to try to bring them down.

The Breakdown

The score breaks down like this: Did they try to kill someone? Who was it? Why are they so evil? How evil was their sidekick? In addition, are there any interesting tidbits that give them any evil bonuses?

Here is my Top Ten List of those evil doers, those good for nothing bad guys and gals who tried their best to do their worst.

10. Lady Tremaine

Movie: Cinderella (1950)

As Cinderella’s Wicked Stepmother, Lady Tremaine, is one of the mildest on the list. She didn’t kill or try to kill Cinderella. She was as a social climber, using her two ugly daughters to try and nab a royal title. Not a nice lady, but not the worst.

As for Cinderella’s evil step-sisters; Drusilla and Anastasia are two bumbling, vain nitwits who are minimally useful as sidekicks. She gets some clever help from her wonderfully wickedly minded kitty, Lucifer, who tries to make Cinderella's rodent friends lunch. Who names their cat Lucifer?

In the end, Lady Tremaine is the brains and brawn of the operation and gets bonus points for taking the lady of the house, Cinderella, and turning her into a slave.

9. The Queen of Hearts

Movie: Alice in Wonderland (1951)

Anyone who’s main line is “Off with their head!” deserves a place on the list of villains. She wants to behead just about everyone when she loses her temper, which is more often than not. She's not interested in reason or kindness nor is she interested in being fair. All she seems to care about is pushing people around and screaming orders to behead anyone who doesn't follow her always changing rules.

There doesn’t seem to be any reason for her murderous streak, only in Alice’s world queens are insane. I'm not sure of it's social commentary of our time, but singers like Morrissey would be inclined to agree and then crack a faint smile, because that's all they could bear.

As for the Queen of Hearts, being insane is definitely a bonus. She’d be higher on the list, but she comes across as comical and all the evil she does is easy turned around by her sidekick, the gentle King.

8. Gaston

Movie: Beauty and the Beast (1991)

Gaston's a rude, vain, shallow hunter who doesn’t like taking ‘no’ for an answer.

How bad is he?

Gaston drinks, smokes and gets into bar fights, which is a whole lot of badness in a Disney film. It's almost cause for a parental advisory. For a villain, it’s a nice little bonus. Worst of all is his jealous streak, which is when he goes for the jugular. He tried to have Maurice, Belle’s father, committed to an insane asylum unless she married him. Talk about being unable to take rejection well.

In the end he rallied a mob of villagers to kill Beast, eventually stabbing Belle’s love in the back. He is a nasty one indeed.

7. Hades

Movie: Hercules (1997)

He is a killer, but considering he’s Hades, the ruler of the underworld, you shouldn’t expect anything less. So why is he so low on the list? It hurts to have Pain (voiced by Bobcat Goldthwait) and Panic (voiced by Matt Frewer) as your sidekicks. They are pretty inept and that makes Hades look pretty bad considering he doesn’t seem to know what the hell is going on half the time.

In the end, he uses Megara to do his dirty work. Why? He’s jealous of his big brother, Zeus, and wants to be in charge. Not a good sign for someone so powerful. But, he is the ruler of the underworld and that gives him bonus points.

6. Jafar

Movie: Aladdin (1992)

Like other villains before him, Jafar craves power and will do just about anything for it. He tried to marry Jasmine, hypnotize the sultan and then uses magic to become all powerful. At least he's goal oriented.

He does try to kill Aladdin and Jasmine, but like every Disney bad guy before and after, he fails. He did send a man into the Cave of Wonders, knowing full well the thief wasn’t the “Diamond in the Rough”, so he does kill someone. What was that theif’s name? Yeah, I don’t know either, but at least the bad intentions were there.

Jafar has a pretty awesome sidekick in Iago (voiced by Gilbert Gottfried), who has a pretty bad attitude and nasty disposition for such colorful bird.

Cruella
Cruella

5. Cruella De Vil

Movie: One Hundred and One Dalmatians (1961)

She’s a nasty piece of work throughout the movie and hunts down puppies like the predator she is. I guess when a woman loves fur that much there’s not much she won’t do for it.

Her two sidekicks, Jasper and Horace Badun, are bumbling fools, but you don’t have to be smart to kidnap then skin puppies. In the end, she doesn’t get her puppy coat, but Cruella gets major bonus points for this line alone:

“Poison them. Drown them. Bash them in the head. You got any chloroform?” Are you kidding me?

Did she really say that? The woman has no heart at all. Of course, that’s why in the movie Roger sings, “The world was such a wholesome place until Cruella…Cruella…De Vil”.

4. Maleficent

Movie: Sleeping Beauty (1959)

She’s a fairy with an axe to grind. Maleficent gives Aurora the gift of death on her sixteenth birthday. Nice present, huh? Her gift is thwarted by Merryweather, one of the three good fairies.

Why?

Maybe the King and Queen should have been more considerate and invited her to their daughter’s christening. That or she’s evil to the bone and not afraid to show it.

She also has the best sidekick of all time: Diablo, her Raven familiar, but gets brought down a little bit by having bumbling goons who search for an infant when the princess is already a teen. She gets extra bonus points for mind screwing the King and Queen. They get to spend sixteen years tormented about Aurora’s downfall, while she waits around and Goths up her castle. She’s my personal favorite, but there are other Disney Villains that top the scale.

3. Doctor Facilier

Movie: The Princess and the Frog (2009)

He’s a voodoo man and he’s only too happy to use black magic to get his way. Anyone who’s known as The Shadow Man is one to be feared.

He gets major kudos for being one of only two villains who actually succeed at killing a major character (the loveable Cajun firefly, Ray); a rare feat in the world of Disney.

He gets bonus points for using voodoo, tapping into demonic forces and controlling shadows. Now that’s a bad guy doing his best to be the worst.

2. The Evil Queen

Movie: Snow White and the Seven Dwarves (1937)

She sends her servant to kill Snow White then bring the girl’s heart back in a box. There’s a whole lot of ugliness behind that beautiful exterior.

Her only companion is Magic Mirror, who is actually a slave and only able to answer questions when asked. This makes him the perfect sidekick since his lack of humor and honest approach make him pretty darn creepy. If you've ever put on the DVD, he eerily talks until you start the movie. That alone is worth the price of having to listen to Snow Whit's shrill voice throughout the movie.

But the Evil Queen is only interested in one thing: how beautiful she is. In the true traditions of a pageant queen, when you’re the ‘fairest in the land’ you will do whatever it takes to keep that title. This includes tricking the newest pretty girl into eating a poisonous apple to kill her. So what does

The Evil Queen do when she figures out Snow White will not die, but only go into a deep sleep? She cackles, “The dwarves will think she's dead. She'll be buried alive!” She’s not called The Evil Queen for nothing.

1. Scar

Movie: The Lion King (1994)

Everything about this lion is dastardly and wicked. He wants to be the King and nothing, not his older brother or his nephew will stop him from that.

Being the big thinker that he is, killing two birds (or lions as the case may be) with one stone (or herd of wildebeast) was the way to go. He was successful in killing his older brother, the great Mustafa, and sent is sidekicks, Shenzi (voices by Whoopi Goldberg), Banzai (voiced by Cheech Marin and Ed to kill the only remaining heir.

The crazy hyenas failed to kill Simba, but they gave it an honest effort. In fact, they are so nasty and vicious they eventually kill him. You are the company you keep.

Dirty and deadly. Be Prepared indeed.

I Didn't Forget Them, Honest!

Sure there are some other memorable villains not on this list. Like Ursula from The Little Mermaid, but she actually gave Ariel what she wanted even though they were for nefarious reasons. She would have been equally contented to have Ariel completely on land and out of the way. There’s also Captain Hook from Peter Pan. He’s a dastardly pirate who also came across as a buffoon more often than not and poor, sweet Mr. Smee doesn’t help any.

Love them or love to hate them, a good villain can’t help but steal the show. Did I miss any? You think one should rate higher than another? Evil, like art, is subjective, or so these villains would like us to think.

Who is the most evil Disney Villain?

  • Lady Tremaine
  • The Queen of Hearts
  • Gaston
  • Hades
  • Jafar
  • Cruella de Vil
  • Maleficent
  • Doctor Facilier
  • The Evil Queen
  • Scar
  • You're awesome but wrong! The evilest villain is...

I know that the Black Cauldron wasn't the most popular Disney movie, but it still counts. So, my vote definitely goes to the Horned King.

That's why I needed my husband to read this over for me!! I knew I'd forgot someone good and The Black Cauldron is one of his favorite Disney movies. Sigh. After all that time moving villains up and down the list I'd knew I still wouldn't be happy in the end.

My all-time favorite is Cruella di Vil because "101 Dalmatians" was probably my very first Disney movie. Or was that "Old Yeller"? Voted up, interesting and AWESOME for the subject.

I love Cruella, she has to be the scariest looking out of all the villains, though Ursula comes in a close second.

I have to say that I probably would've still put Ursula into this top ten if it were me, as I think her intentions are pretty evil in how she manages to manipulate Ariel in "The Little Mermaid." However, you do support your reasons rather well in how each character made this list, and why Ursula wasn't in the top ten. As for Jafar, I think Jafar is a pretty bad guy, even though he never kills anyone or tries to, he's devious in how he tricks people to do dangerous favors for him while seemingly leaving them for dead like he tried to do with Aladdin, when he posed as that insane old man. Plus, I completely agree with you about Scar, as it's hard to argue that he's not the best villain that Disney ever produced.

Does Judge Doom from "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" count? If he does, I thought he was a pretty scary bad guy. Sure, his sidekicks were goofy, but that guy was straight up evil. Not only does he kill a cartoon character and a human being in the film, but he manipulates one of the largest schemes in Hollywood to build a freeway, so he can purposely genocide his own kind. Now that's straight up evil there. lol. Plus, that creepy voice he does at the end to reveal he's a cartoon is scary if you ask me. lol.

Anyway, I have to say this is a very impressive list that you compiled, as I'll definitely rate it up. :)

I love all these Disney movies, and this is a great list. I agree that Scar ranks as the top villain. I'd put Cruella de Vil second, and also put in a vote for Shere Khan in The Jungle Book.

Stevennix, I've gotten some flack from my friends for Ursula not being on the list, which is why I mentioned her at the bottom. After I made my prerequisites, I was surprised that another favorite of mine, Capt. Hook didn't measure up in evilness. That was surprising to me, because he tried to blow up a bunch of kids in their own home.

I agree Judge Doom is a nasty fellow and I still can't watch the part where the dips the little shoe. Odd, since I love horror movies, but the death of an animated shoe that we never get to know breaks my heart, lol. But, I was only thinking of fully animated movies.

Brian, I was considering Shere Khan, but in the end decided that with the mix of animal and people, that although a bad tiger, he's acting like a tiger.

I was also baffled that Chernabog (aka Night or Satan in Fantasia) didn't make the list either. That part always scared the hell out of me as a kid.

Thanks so much for the responses!

I think Scar is evil. The other ones are evil by design...being witches and all that. But Scar murdered his own flesh and blood! That is pretty cold.

I know, right? I think I could spend an entire day dissecting his evilness. Not at the same level, Lady Tremaine is in the same ballpark. As a parental figure, she treated Cinderella so aweful, but that's just another display of Walt Disney's mommy issues.

capedmadman 5 years ago

A disney villan list? I can't believe I didn't see this one coming, and with Maleficent at number 4! I do like Doctor Facilier on the list. I remember watching that movie and thinking disney had not gone that dark in some time.

vmartinezwilson profile image

vmartinezwilson 5 years ago from Vancouver, WA Author

capedmadman,

I love Disney, I really do. I got a lot of flak from my family for putting Maleficent at 4, but after making the pseudo point system of Disney evilness, I couldn't boost her up any further without being utterly biased.

And I love Dr. Facilier, not only is he evil and dark, but he's got flair and great style. He was my favorite part of the movie.

Andrew Weiss 5 years ago

Chernabog from Fantasia is the most evil Disney Villan, why? BECAUSE HE IS THE SLAVIC VERSION OF THE DEVIL!!! How can you get more evil than that, he raises the undead just so he can kill them again, and a scary side note, as far as I know he is the only villan that not only lived, but has a guarentee of coming back with chance at being stoped.

vmartinezwilson profile image

vmartinezwilson 5 years ago from Vancouver, WA Author

I don't disagree about Chernabog, Andrew. He may be the Slavic version of the devil, but I'm only counting the Disney interpretations of the character. If I did any more, Hades would also be fighting for the number one spot.

In the Disney version, Chernabog releases the demons for night and pulls them back for the day to the sleep. Nothing more, nothing less. He's scary, for sure, but not as evil as the others on my list.

And I'm sticking to that. :)

Hmmm I'll vote for the Evil Queen, iconic evil but for favourite I'll pick Hades, only because he's such a fun villain voiced by James Woods.

I adore the Evil Queen. I have several pictures on my wall glaring at me right now, lol. My most favorite is Maleficent, obviously, but between the two of them, you have a whole lot of evil awesomeness going on.

Thanks!

Where do I begin? I love them all. Obviously Cruella is my favorite but I've also dressed as Malificent, the Queen from Snow White and the Queen of Hearts so I guess they get equal shares. I love Disney and once owned every Disney DVD..I now have to replace them with CD's. I enjoyed this hub and your interesting descriptions of all the villains. Voted up and interesting.

Thank you very much! I also love my villains, especially the original female villainesses. For me they made the movie and made the hero even better!

Wait, wait: not even a mention of Judge Frollo from The Hunchback of Notre Dame? I'm just going to assume you forgot about him while I explain my reasoning. He's a hypocrite who orders people imprisoned and even killed unjustly, all while pretending that his actions are the will of God. He achieves villainy early in the movie when he kills (actually KILLS) Quasimodo's mother, and doesn't kill the infant only because of the archdeacon's intervention. He doesn't have any real compassion, as seen in how he treats Quasimodo as an infant and adult. Frollo describes him as an "unholy demon" and values the child only for his own gain: "even this foul creature may yet prove one day to be of use to me." He succumbs to his lust for Esmerelda and gives her the choice, "love me or die," even though he knows his actions are sins. During his song "Hellfire," part of the Latin chanting in the background translates to:

That I have sinned / In thought / In word and deed / Through my fault / Through my fault / Through my most grievous fault.

I feel like this describes Frollo's subconsciousness: he knows he sins, yet he justifies it to continue to appear holy. Nothing keeps him from getting his way: he even violates the sanctuary law and assaults Notre Dame and the archdeacon just to be able to kill people.

Why do I believe Frollo is the ultimate Disney villain? His struggle is ultimately divine. His job and duties have given him power, and he wields it like a tyrant while attempting to appear just and righteous. He knows that his will opposes God's, but he couldn't care less.

vmartinezwilson profile image

vmartinezwilson 4 years ago from Vancouver, WA Author

UnsungRhapsody,

I can't disagree that he's a nasty character. I think my biggest problem with him is his lasting impression as a world and Disney icon. I think it may have more to do with the lack of lasting impression the film made as a whole. But is he evil? Absolutely. Should he have made the list? He definitely fits the bill.

I recall listing all of his pros and cons and honestly, I can't recall why Lady Tremaine beat him out. I know icon status was one reason, but I can't recall the others. Side kicks or something else?

An issue I do have with him is that he isn't very compelling as a whole. And this is coming from a person who loved her villains! In my opinion, they are the characters that truly push the narrative forward. There was a sort of hollowness in his character, which can be compared to The Mongols in Mulan.

Of course, my opinion is just that. I'll have to re-watch Huntchback, because it's been a while and my brain is currently filled with Japanese horror films.

Thanks for stopping by and giving something to think about.

Frollo all the way.

Rio 4 years ago

Frollo deserves to be on here.

Guy 3 years ago

Frollo? Hollow? On the contrary, I think he was one of the most complex and well realized Disney Villains ever created!

Claude Frollo 3 years ago

Frollo must be added... this guy is evil to the maximum. He deserves the number one place. He burns gypsies in their houses, Kills Quazimoto's mother, and he has a thing for Esmeralda. He see's himself as a good person. Scar knows he is evil and acknowledges it, where Frollo see's himself as a holy warrior not seeing the corruption inside him. Frollo is also one of the most imposing and awesome of all, the way he wields that sword and quotes bible verses is amazing.

And they gazed up in fear and alarm at a figure whose clutches were iron as much as the bells, the bells of Notre Dame.

Death-carioca 3 years ago

Scar was one of them, but not the most evil.

First,Chernabog because is pure evil, the Devil.

Second,The Horned King, because was one of the most scariest things in our childhood. He IS the evil himself.

Third,Scar,he killed his brother and almost killed his nephew,it's the Hitler counterpart of all the Disney history.

Geoff 3 years ago

Ya no, Scar isn't as evil as some of the other Disney villains out there.. I mean ya, he killed his own brother, but that's what being an animal is, I mean if we're going down that route, then why not Sher Kan? He did more, and was more intimidating. The real evil of Disney is Frollo, we're talking about Hitler in Disney form here, a person who tries to commit mass genocide while getting into a woman's pants all under the name of God... tell me, which other Disney villain tried to commit mass genocide, which is by far the most evil thing a person can do? No one, that's who, not even malefocent tried to commit mass genocide? she just tried to off a baby because she wasn't invited to a party.

Syrah 3 years ago

I must admit i am bias having acted in the role of the Queen of Hearts the queen of hearts role (Favorite classic villain role was the witch from Hansel and Gretel but sadly not on the list) but the Queen of Hearts was wonderfully insane I think she should at least be a little higher up as she does kill some cards and such and the trial is obviously rigged...

My favorite is Jafar, but I would say Frollo is one of the most evil Disney villains out there.

Tim 2 years ago

I like this list a lot. I believe Scar is fit to be #1 and it doesn't help that my favorite Disney movie is the The Lion King. I also liked Oogie Boogie from Nightmare Before Christmas - he was trying to kill Santa! Probably not top ten material but honorable mention.

UndercoverAgent19 profile image

UndercoverAgent19 2 years ago

Overall, I definitely agreed with this list and your commentary about each villain. However, I think the most evil villain in a Disney movie is Frollo from The Hunchback of Notre Dame. He abuses his power, tries to implement a genocide, tries to kill Esmeralda when she won't sleep with him, and also tries to kill the ward he has been caring for for eighteen years. And that's just the start of his cruel, evil actions.

SplishSplash 2 years ago

If Anastasia was a Disney movie I would say Rasputin because he like never dies. And also he is for real like he keep not dieing in real life! So that makes it even scaier.

Damon 2 years ago

My vote is to Frollo is number 1... I always understood why with Scar because he is just an outcast forced to become a villain... he never really had a chance because he was 2nd best all his life. Honestly Simbia is more evil than scar... he wants to eradicated hynias purely because he doesn't like them...Think about it... Why do they hate and outcast them? only because they are not the same as the lions... Scar actually joins up with them because he has to but still...

I know this is quite late but it seems EVERYONE overlooked the most evil villain of all Disney villains, the one who was never caught or in any way hindered.. the coachman from Pinnochio.

Think about it. He seems to be a somewhat demonic figure who turns misbehaving boys into donkeys and sells them into slavery. That seems very severe for kids who simply do not know any better and often have their parents to blame for setting a bad example.

And he is never stopped. Personly I never cared about Pinnochio becoming a real boy as a kid.. I was more concerned about all those kids that turned into donkeys. It was a straight up horror movie.

All the villains on this list combined don't even seem that evil.

Scar, i don't find frollo evil as scar.

Frollo is the most evil and complex disney villain, he deserves the 1st place.

Anonymous 20 months ago

Madam Mim is kind of overlooked for this list. She is not the evilest villain, but could've made it into the top 10.

She takes delight into being evil, tries to kill Arthur only because he said his magic was more focused (she literraly tried to eat him, as he was transformed earlier into a bird by Merlim, she transformed herself into a cat to hunt Arthur), and when duelling with Merlim for Arthur's life, she made rules to trick Merlim into following them while she didn't. As a bonus, she tried to kill Merlim several time through the duel and showed more powerful magic than Merlim (he won by outsmarting her and using a real loophole in the rules), and that's all within twenty minutes of screen time

Jelly 19 months ago

Claude frollo should be added as he wanted Esmeralda for inappropriate things, killed Quasimodos mom, even after she asked for sanctuary and almost killed baby Quasimodo and was so friggin mean to him. He told himself and believed he was a holy man and also believed Esmeralda could only be his. Scar is evil but he had no choice. I am a younger sibling and I feel that Scar is a typical sibling except waaaaaaay evil. People just think he is evil because he killed mufasa but frollo did worse.

Emsgarr 18 months ago

Mother Gothel seems pretty evil to me. I mean, she's ridiculously vain, she's a kidnapper, she manipulates a young girl (pretending to be her mother...come on...that's just wrong), and she (sort of) murders Flynn. She's all kinds of nasty rolled up into one. She doesn't even have a sad backstory to justify her actions.

Anonymous 2 months ago

You left Judge Frollo out...

He killed the protagonist's mother on the steps of a church.

(if not for the archdeacon's warning)almost drowned a baby(protagonist).

Committed genocide and burned down Paris...

All that while thinking he was holier than thou and just...

He is an old human man with no magical powers, only political and religious power, yet he caused as much, if not more destruction and death than any of the other Disney villains. He has never been in anyone's shadow and he never had to fight for power.

Also... Hellfire.

Scar doesn't hold a candle to Frollo in terms of evilness.
