Chorus:

This old house and me died a long time ago

in the spring of '63 when the winds of war did blow

like a hurricane thru the pine trees that once stood on that hill

My ghost haunts this old house and always will.

verse 1:

They say that Yankee army marched for forty days

straight into the sights of Stonewall's Brigade

smoke lay in the valley the smell of death was everywhere

and their dream of glory became their nightmare.

verse 2:

My Daddy built this house, my brothers farmed the land

Momma died of the fever guess I'll never understand

why them folks up north wouldn't leave well enough alone

come all that way to die so far from their homes.

Chorus:

This old house and me died a long time ago

in the spring of '63 when the winds of war did blow

like a hurricane thru the pine trees that once stood on that hill

My ghost haunts this old house and always will.

verse 3:

Dwayne died in the garden tryin' to save our cow

James rushed to his side and a bullet split his brow

I was hidin' in the house with no way to escape

the flames that took this house and sealed my fate.

verse 4:

there's a black berry thicket that once was our front yard

I'm alone with these two chimneys and we're always standing guard

My brothers were laid to rest beneath that hickory tree

but the ghost of a child can never leave.

Chorus:

This old house and me died a long time ago

in the spring of '63 when the winds of war did blow

like a hurricane thru the pine trees that once stood on that hill

My ghost haunts this old house and always will.

the end.
