Vidya Balan - Family and Filmography

Vidya Balan is one of the top Bollywood Actresses. Apart from Hindi films, she also has acted in Bengali and Malayalam films. Vidya was born on 1st January 1978 in a Tamil Iyer family in the Palghat District of Kerala. Her family consists of her father P.R. Balan, her Mom and married older sister Priya. Vidya’s family re-located to Mumbai when she was young. Vidya has a Masters degree in Sociology from the Bombay University. Vidya Balan has won several Awards including the National Film Award for Best Actress. She is a fan of actor Shahrukh Khan and incidentally her Husband (Siddharth Roy Kapur, CEO of UTV Motion Pictures) also has the same initials (SRK) as Shahrukh Khan.

Vidya Balan got her first break with a Malyalam movie 'Chakram' opposite Mohanlal, but the project was shelved. She was also rejected by a Tamil Director who did not find her suitable for being a heroine of his film. Before making a mark in Movies, Vidya did several print ads, music video’s and two TV Serials (Ekta Kapoor's Hum Paanch and Ashok Pandit's Hanste Khelte). Parineeta opposite Saif Ali Khan

Parineeta is a Bollywood film based on the Bengali Novel of the same name by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay. This Movie was directed by Pradeep Sarkar and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. In this film, Vidya Balan played the role of Lalita who is in love with Shekhar Rai (played by Saif Ali Khan). This film also has Sanjay Dutt, Diya Mirza, Raima Sen and Sabyasachi Chakraborty in important roles. Actress Rekha played a cameo in the movie as a dancer and singer in a nightclub. Parineeta won the National Award for Best Film. Vidya Balan won the Filmfare Award for the Best Debut Female.

In Lage Raho Munna Bhai, Vidya Balan played the role of Jhanvi, a radio-jockey and love interest of Munna Bhai (played by actor Sanjay Dutt). It was the second film in the popular Munna Bhai series films (the first being Munna Bhai MBBS). This movie was directed by Rajkumar Hirani and produced by Vindhu Vinod Chopra. In Paa, Vidya Balan played the role of an unwed Mother with a 12 year old son Auro (played by Amitabh Bachchan) having a rare genetic condition known as progeria that results in accelerated aging. Vidya Balan’s character Vidya is a gynecologist. The film is based on on a father-son relationship. The film was directed by R Balki and produced by Sunil Manchanda. The film is also special because the then 66 year old Amitabh Bachchan who is the real father of the then 33 year old Abhishek Bachchan played the role of his son Auro. The film also stars Paresh Rawal, Arundhati Nag and Satyajit Sharma in important roles. Vidya Balan got her first Filmfare Best Actress Award for her role in the film.

Paa was a huge Box office success and was especially liked by children.

Ishqiya opposite Naseeruddin Shah

In Ishqiya, Vidya Balan played the role of Krishna Verma, a widow who seduces two criminals (Iftikhar aka Khalujan played by Naseeruddin Shah and Razzak Hussain aka Babban played by Arshad Warsi) in order to achieve her own secret goal. This film was directed by Abhishek Chaubey and produced by Raman Maroo and Vishal Bhardwaj. The film also stars Salman Shahid, Adil Hussain, Rajesh Sharma and Anupama Kumar.

Though the film was an average performer at the box office, the performances of Vidya Balan, Naseeruddin Shah and Arshad Warsi were appreciated. These Actors also won several Awards for their performance in the movie. A sequal of the movie is supposed to be released soon known as Dedh Ishqiya. However, Vidya Balan may not be part of the movie and may have Kangna Ranaut and Madhuri Dixitas female leads.

In No One Killed Jessica based on the controversial Jessica Lal murder case, Vidya Balan played the role of Sabrina Lall, the victim's sister who teams up with a reporter (Meera Gaity played by Rani Mukerji) to bring her case justice. Myra Karn plays the role of Jessica Lal, a celebrity barmaid who was shot dead by a socialite for refusing the serve him drinks. The film was directed by Raj Kumar Gupta and Produced by Ronnie Screwvala.

No One Killed Jessica was received well by the audience and critics. The performances of Vidya Balan and Rani Mukherjee was appreciated. Even the music of the film was a success.

In The Dirty Picture, Vidya Balan played the role of the provocative and controversial Reshma aka Silk who uses her sexuality for making it big as an actress. The film is based on the life of Silk Smitha, a South Indian sex symbol noted for her erotic roles. Vidya Balan appears in many kissing and intimate scenes in this movie. The film was directed by Milan Luthria and co-produced by Shobha Kapoor and Ekta Kapoor. The film also stars Naseeruddin Shah, Tusshar Kapoor, Emraan Hashmi, Anju Mahendru and Rajesh Sharma in important roles. Vidya Balan won several awards for the film including the National Film Award for Best Actress.

The Dirty Picture was a box-office hit and did well in India and abroad. This film also has some hit songs. This movie was set to be telecast on Sony Entertainment Television but was pulled out as the film is not suitable for prime time viewing despite many cuts made in this adult film. It is said that this picture is going to be remade in Bengali with Rakhi Sawant playing the lead. After the kissing scene with Emraan Hashmi in The Dirty Picture, Vidya would be locking lips with him again in her next film Ghanchakkar.

Kahaani is women centric film. If you thought the acting of Vidya Balan as superb in Paa or Dirty Picture, watch Kahaani. You will be amazed how she gets into the skin of her character Vidya Bagchi. In Kahaani, Vidya Balan played the role of the 7 months pregnant (which she is not) woman who arrives in Kolkata from London during the Durga Puja Festival to find her missing husband. This movie is directed by Sujoy Ghosh and produced by Sujoy Ghosh and Kushal Kantilal Gada. This film also stars Parambrata Chatterjee, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Indraneil Sengupta, Dhritiman Chatterjee,Saswata Chatterjee, Darshan Jariwala and Abir Chatterjee.

In Bhool Bhulaiyaa, Vidya Balan played the role of Avni, the wife of an NRI Siddharth (played by Shiney Ahuja) who suffers from Dissociative Identity Disorder. Guru is based on the life story of Dhirubhai Ambani. The lead character of Gurukant Desai who dreams of making it big some day is played by Abhishek Bachchan. In Guru, Vidya Balan played the role of Meenakshi Saxena aka Meenu who suffers from multiple sclerosis and is stuck up in the wheelchair. Bhaalo Theko is a Bengali film. In Bhaalo Theko, Vidya Balan played the role of Anandi who is deceived by her boyfriend Babua shine (played by Joy Sengupta). This film was directed by Gautam Halder. This film also stars Soumitra Chatterjee, Parambrata Chatterjee, Debshankar Haldar and Rimjhim Gupta.

Bhalo Theko was screened at the Bangkok film festival and also won Vidya Balan the Anandalok Best Actress Award in 2005 for her performance in the movie.

@Crazzykylex I don't think Vidya had much to do in Hey Baby or Halla Bol which is why I avoided the films. Hey Baby movie was more about the Baby and the 3 hero's. Same is the case of Halla Bol too. The Movie focus was on Ajay Devgan. Though Vidya played the role of his wife, she did not have much to do in the movie. Thanks for the visit and comment.
