Choosing an Audition Song

Walking into an audition takes courage, especially if it is your first time. Even if you don't know exactly what to expect, you need to be very confident that you will be able showcase your talent with ease.

You want to amaze the audience, whether it is a single casting director for a film, your high school music teacher, or an auditorium filled with your peers.

The key to a successful audition is preparation. Choosing the right audition song is a big part of preparing for what can be a very stressful situation! The more thoroughly prepared you are, the easier it will be for you to relax and showcase your talent.

Top Audition Songs

There are so many auditions songs to choose from. I will be highlighting some of the most popular audition songs, but first it is important for you to evaluate what song suits you and your voice best. Please also consider your audience and the type of role you are auditioning for. Stay away from songs with foul language, as they are not appropriate for auditions.

Often, some of the best audition songs are also the most overused. You may want to stay away from songs like "Good Morning Balitmore" or "Part of Your World" from the Little Mermaid. These have been used so often that they are just not enjoyable to listeners anymore!

How to Choose an Audition Song

By Personalizing your audition song, you will bring your unique personality or show off your ability to act while showcasing your singing voice. The following video talks a little more about how to do this with the audition song that you have chosen for your big audition.

I don't recognize any of these songs, but I also don't watch American Idol or those kind of shows.

My wife sings Sarah Brighman type songs, those I like.

don't use any of these songs use a very unknown song and you'll rock that auditon

Mel 6 years ago

This is a good list. I haven't seen too many of these done on those shows.

You may also want to suggest that people have multiple songs ready just in case.

Thanks Mel, you're right, having a second song prepared just in case is a smart idea!

If you're looking for pop songs for auditions, some great songs would be 'Wherever you will go' by Charlene Soraia, 'Jar of Hearts' by Christina Perry; these songs will test your registers, so you've got to be pretty Careful as they're quite a hard songs, oh and also 'Because of you' and 'Mr Know it all' by kKelly Clarkson, and I would definitely recommend all 'Pink' songs as they are all amazing, and relate to real life, and also very technical. Oh and not forgetting Adele's 'Rolling in the deep' , 'Turning Tables' and 'Set fire to the Rain', and Ed Sheeran's 'Small Bump' And 'This'. - these are all very powerful songs, and will definitely bring a tear to the judges/audiences eyes. Oh and 'Up' by James Morrison and Jessie J. I am also a 13 year old,and a very keen singer. I live in England, and have competed in talent shows and competitions using many of these songs, and have been very successful! I've performed in school plays and separate shows with theatre companies. Hope this has been helpful !! Xxxxx

hi so im a 13 year old auditioning for a musical that is basically a bunch of scenes from different musicals. my director has not told us the plays yet but i was wondering if "my favorite things" from the sound of music would be a good choice. i think it fits my voice well but i wasn't sure if it was over used or something. THANKS:)

anonymous 2 years ago

I found this really helpful and I really appreciate the list of most-used songs because even though you told us not to use them im going to use the little mermaids song
