Top British Boy Bands - The Wanted
The Wanted vs One Direction - Fair Fight, Right?
Not a real fight, unless you count their recent spat on Twitter of course!
Well not yet anyway but already fans are lining up behind either The Wanted OR One Direction when it comes to their music.
The British press are doing everything they can to push the public's buttons with a whole Rolling Stones vs The Bealtes vibe between these fantastic new boy bands.
It is rare for Britain to have 2 top boy bands co-existing with the kind of popularity that The Wanted and One Direction are currently enjoying.
One Direction have gone to the top of the charts in both the UK and the USA and are chipping away at the rest of the world very quickly.
The Wanted are a more rough hewn version of One Direction but these two top boy bands have more in common than you might think.
Britain is getting terribly good at 'manufacturing' boy bands. They manufactured one of the world's top girl bands ever in The Spice Girls and we all know how well that went down.
Now it's the boys' turn!
The Wanted - Band Members
The Wanted are an Anglo-Irish band with Max, Tom, Jay and Nathan coming from England and Siva coming from Ireland.
Siva's background is very interesting because his mother is Irish and his father is Sri-Lankan so he has the wonderful surname Kaneswaran. Siva was a model before being asked to join the band when it was being formed by Jayne Collins, the guru behind two other successful manufactured bands, The Saturdays and Parade.
Max and Tom are both from Lancashire, Jay and Nathan are from Southern England.
Max was originally part of the band Avenue who got through to boot camp in the 2006 series of X Factor but were disqualified for already having professional status.
Before that, Max played soccer for Preston North End and was offered another contract but chose instead to pursue a singing career.
The Wanted were put together after Jayne Collins auditioned over 1,000 singers.
Fans definitely think she got the combination of cute and macho just right.
How Did The Wanted Get Together?
Jayne Collins is a Casting Director and Talent scout, famous for creating The Saturdays, Parade and The Wanted.
Of these 3 bands, Parade are still up and coming but The Wanted and The Saturdays have already enjoyed some chart success.
The Wanted have gone 'big' in the USA, supporting Justin Bieber on his last tour and gaining some great reportage from their amazing live gigs - full of energy and fun.
The Wanted band members were all part of a long audition process until Jayne got a boy band together whose voices melded together well and also looked great together 'in shot' for publicity photos.
Let's be honest, there are NO ugly boy bands around - Jayne Collins goes for the teen market and The Wanted fit the bill as a good looking boy band but Collins does not go for the 'good boys' type. Even The Saturdays and Parade look like party animals.
The Wanted, as a result, come over as being a more dressed down version of One Direction and they also write some of their own songs and are involved in the creative processes.
Once Direction look like young, well mannered Americans. The Wanted look like they just got home from an all night party. They are a bit less well-groomed and they sound great. This gives them a reputation for being closer to some urban acts like Example than One Direction.
Top Boy Band - The Wanted - Glad You Came
'Glad You Came' was a song from The Wanted's second album 'Battleground' and became a huge Summer hit in 2011.
The Wanted member Tom has described 'Glad You Came' as 'a song for the Summer and one that gets you in the mood for a party'.
The song reached #1 in Ireland and UK and was The Wanted's debut hit on the Billboard 100, reaching #3 and also getting them publicity and appearances in the States.
The video was shot in Ibiza with each boy frolicking with a different girl in a big Ibiza villa. At the time the boys claimed the girls were all models flown in for the shoot, though Tom joked later that his young lady was somebody met on the street after a night of partying. Who knows!
The video for 'Glad You Came' has been watched on YouTube over 46 million times, people do like a bit of frolicking in the sunshine - especially party capital, Ibiza.
The Wanted - Olympic Fun
The London Olympics 'run up' began with an Olympic torch relay beginning at Land's End.
Throughout the relay, the torch was carried by a number of celebrities.
The Wanted got their chance to carry the Olympic torch in London leading up the the finale and the start of the games.
A concert was held in Hyde Park to celebrate the Olympic torch arriving in the capital and The Wanted were one of the best bands on the bill that day.
I think they probably enjoyed carrying the Olympic torch just as much as the performance and of course, no matter how long The Wanted remain a top boy band, they will always be in the history books in the UK for carrying the torch on the relay.
American Music Awards - Hello USA!
The Wanted were the stars of the show at the American Music Awards and still had to wait in line to buy their own drinks at the bar after the performance!
They did not qualify for table service for some reason but that did not stop them enjoying a bottle of Corona each - maybe not the best thing to wet your whistle after a good song-song but they seemed to appreciate it
The Wanted delivered a dominant performance of 'I Found You' and received rapturous applause from the audience (especially the ladies!).
As one journalist in The Mirror commented "As much as we love One Direction and their 'sweet cup of tea' lyrics, they don't really get the heart racing like The Wanted ...."
And maybe that is what might see The Wanted take over One Direction eventually in the fight to be THE Top Boy Band - maturity, sexiness, manliness - you won't be able to call The Wanted a Top 'boy' band really - they are not a Hanson type band.
The Wanted understand what the ladies want - they make great songs and are amazing when they perform live.
The Wanted is now on America's radar and that is a good thing for the band.

The Wanted - Britain's 2nd Top Boy Band?
So for now, The Wanted, in record sales, are the second top boy band in the western world.
One Direction still sit atop that hallowed throne with their boyish grins and infeasibly coiffed haircuts.
But unless One Direction 'grow up' with their ages, The Wanted will soon take them over.
Neither band can compare to The Rolling Stones or The Beatles (yet? ever?) but their battle to be the top boy band is keeping a lot of music fans enthralled.
And if they keep up the feisty tweeting and counter-tweeting on Twitter, they may stay top of the music news reports for a while yet.
Many thanks for reading.
