James Gandolfini

James Gandolfini Dies in Rome, Italy

While enjoying Rome, Italy with his 13 year-old son, James Gandolfini had a heart attack and died at age 51. This is such a tragedy, and there is not very much medical information available at this time. He had planned to attend the Taormina Film Festival in Sicily on Sunday.

Gaandolfini's Career

Certainly most Americans and many people in other countries will miss this excellent actor. He is best known as Tony Soprano from “The Sopranos” as this HBO series ran for six years. He won three Emmy awards for this series.

He has also appeared on Broadway and in a number of movies, such as “Zero Dark Thirty”, and had currently been working on a new HBO crime drama called “Killing Them Softly.” James had also been nominated for a Tony award for a Broadway performance. He has played in a large number of movies through the years. James played the role of the perfect gangster, but he was versatile and played other types of characters as well.

The Sopranos

James Gandolfini's Youth

James was born September 18, 1961, in Westwood, New Jersey and graduated from Park Ridge High School. In the senor yearbook, he won the award of the “class flirt.” He went to Rutgers University and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in communication studies. He also worked at the campus pub as a bouncer. It almost sounds like he was practicing for all those ganster roles he played.

His mother was of Italian descent, but was born in America but raised in Naples, Italy.

Special Projects

In 2007, he produced a HBO documentary focusing on injured Iraq veterans. In addition, he also produced at PTSD documentary, which analyzed this disorder from the Civil War through today. He interviewed military officers, and he the methods being used to get help with PTSD.

James' Private Life

James Gandolfini has kept ties with his hometown, and supports the Octoberwomen Foundation for Breast Cancer. He owns a lot of Lake Manitoba Narrows and in 2009 he bought a home in Tewksbury Township, New Jersey.

In 2008, James married Deborah Lin, a former model, in her hometown of Honolulu, Hawaii. They had a daughter, Liliana Ruth, born in LA in 2012. He also has a son, named Michael who was with him when he died. The mother of this boy was Marcy Wudarski, and they divorced in 2002.

James Gandolfini is a motorcycle fan and owns a Harley-Davidson and a Vespa scooter.

Summary

We have lost one of the more talented actors in Hollywood due to heart disease. While no one knows at this point, it is probable that Tony had a few heart symptoms prior to his death.

It is good for men and women to know the symptoms of heart disease because the "elephant on the chest" is more like the final curtain. Heart discomfort is not sharp pain, but often a tightening on dull pain, which can often be relieved by sitting down and taking some deep breaths. Discomfort can occur from the chest to the throat, down one or both arms and in the back. Shortness of breath with activity and discomfort with profuse sweating is a time to call 911.

We are saddened by the loss of this talented man.

Pam,

I was seriously heartsick to learn of James' death this morning. Thank you so much for remembering him so promptly and beautifully.

Born only two months before me in my neighboring state, I have always loved this man...loved the Sopranos and now will always be reminded of the importance of heart health while living life fully, when I think of him.

Voted UP and UABI. Love, Maria

Hi Dearest Pamela,

Yes, this is so sad. He was much too young to die and had a great career ahead of him no doubt! None of us know when it will be our last day, so we should live each day as if it were, as it very well may be! Heart disease is truly a killer! My dad had heart disease, but he died from a stroke way back in '89.

Blessings, Faith Reaper

I am glad to see this Hub. I was a fan of James for many years. I can't help but wonder if maybe he had a high cholesterol just looking at him and his body. Men don't take the time away from their busy schedules to go to a Dr. for checkups the way they should. I lost my Hubby at the same age, suddenly.

I am hoping his death will cause men to have a medical checkup.

Thanks for writing this. Voted UP and will share all around.

Thanks Pamela for wring this up and seriously still a bit in shock. I watched every episode of The Sopranos and never thought that I would hear this. I mean I just so happened to be on Facebook, when the new broke and it was all over my feed. Thought at first it was a hoax, but it really did happen and as I said still not totally believing it (if that makes sense). Thank you though for sharing .

Very sad, he was much too young. Luckily James' sister was also traveling with him and his son so the boy wasn't alone. He unfortunately found his dad in the bathroom. Again, very sad.

Nice tribute, Pamela. It causes me to stop and appreciate every day things even more. What a shame to lose someone his age with young children. I loved him in "The Mexican" with Brad Pitt and in "Get Shorty" as well. He will be missed.

Mary, It would be nice if his death was a wake-up call for others as 51 is too young to die. He may have had a family history as well, but the choldesterol can be controlled. I as sorry you lost your husband at such a young age also. I appreciate your comments.

I know everyone knew him for The Sopranos. But does anyone remember him in The Mexican with Julia Roberts and Brad Pitt? He was genius in the role of the gay contract killer with the heart of gold. How many of those roles are out there? And how many big, tough guys could do a role like that justice? He made it look easy. What a loss.

Certainly a lovely tribute Pam. He was a wonderful man and had a kind heart. (Without belaboring let's just say I know a friend of his cousin's.)

He will be missed and it is just so sad to see someone like that die so young.

Voted up, useful and interesting.

A sad loss to the entertainment world. James Gandolfini was a talented and spirited actor. His Tony Soprano is a masterpiece of acting- a Gangster, family man, passionate lover, a friend, a businessman and a tormented patient seeking psychotherapy a multidimensional role if ever there was and Gandolfini nailed it. Everyone in their forties should undertake a lipid profile and a full health check up as the coronary silent heart disease can strike at any time. While angina ( the elephant in the chest) can be a good warning sign - for many the first sign will be a fatal heart attack! Great hub, Pamela.

I'm a huge fan of James Gandolfini. I've liked him ever since the first time I saw him in a movie called True Romance. It came as such a shock when I heard about his death. Too young to die. Nice tribute Pam.

Docmo, He truly is a sad loss to the entertainment world. I think the message we need to hear is what you said abpout men and I also think woment need to get a lipid profile by their forties. This is often a silent disease, but deadly. I had no symptoms and ended up with 2 stents, so I know this to be tgrue. Thanks for your comemtns.

Losing him was indeed a great loss. So young and holding so much promise. It behooves us to continue to embrace each day to the fullest as not one of us in promised another day. Knowing about heart disease is so important especially if heart disease is present in your family. My sister has had two heart attacks, and, one of them she was 'dead' for 17 minutes. But survived for which I am so thankful.

Perhaps his loss will remind each of us to not ignore chest pain or dizziness or other little niggling hints that heart issues are present.

Angels are on the way to his son, the rest of his family, and to you and yours...:) ps

Pamela99 profile image

Pamela99 3 years ago from United States Author

Patricia, I hope that his loss will make people see their doctors and also learn more about heart disease also. You sister is really a walking miracle. Thanks so much for your comments. His family, especially his son need some angels right now. Blessings.
