Why CBS's Big Brother is Real Reality

Fake Reality

Okay, I know that a lot of people love their reality television. And, lets face it, there are so many different reality shows out there that there's probably something for everyone. I'm just not a reality fan. None of it is really reality! It's all scripted or pieced together in such a way that you're just not getting the real story. Plus, we don't know what goes on when the cameras aren't rolling. I would go out on a limb and say that at least 75% of reality television is not really real at all. Really.

America's Watching You!

There is one, and only one, reality television show that I'm willing to watch. In fact, I have never missed it since its eighth season. I'm talking about Big Brother on CBS. This is the only show I know of that actually displays what's really going on. Big Brother 14 premieres this summer on July 12 at 9PM EST!!

Yeah, you can watch the broadcast show and only see what they're willing to show you, but you don't have to settle for that. In fact, you can actually watch the Big Brother house guests almost 24/7 aside from just a few things like when they're doing the competitions. You can subscribe to a 24 hour feed so you can view the cameras in the house and see what everyone is doing in real time. Not only do you get to see the super secret discussions and scheming, you get to watch them pick their nose! Or pull out wedgies! Or pass gas! Yeah, it's a blast. Still, it's a lot more real than other shows.

If you have the SHO2 channel from Showtime, you can watch Big Brother: After Dark which airs every night from 12-3 AM EST and shows you the live feeds.

What's Big Brother?

I just want to give a quick rundown in case someone's reading this and has no idea what the show is. Big Brother is a reality show that airs on CBS in the summer. Some other countries have their own version, too. Basically, they put 10+ strangers in a house. Every week, the winner of the Head of Household competition gets to choose two people that they think should go home.

Those two people, as well as a few others, get to compete in a Power of Veto competition later in the week. The winner gets a chance to veto one of the nominees. If they do, the Head of Household chooses a replacement. At the end of the week, they cast a live vote on television and the person with the most votes has to leave.

Sounds simple enough, but the best part of this show is the way it's played. It's not just competitions, of course. There are alliances formed and broken apart all of the time. Lots of sneaking, scheming, lies and scandal. I absolutely love it because it's really real. The show airs three times each week. Two of the episodes show things that have happened that week, but the third is aired live.
