Why NBC said NO to the New Wonder Woman TV Series

We all know who Wonder Woman is, right? But for the young ones, maybe a walk down the memory lane is in order.

Wonder Woman was a comic book character created by William Marston in 1941. Wonder Woman embodied the creator's vision of a woman as intelligent, honest and kind. She had great powers of persuasion. Wonder Woman was an Amazon princess skilled in hand-to-hand combat. Unlike other super heroes, her mission wasn't just to stop crime, but to reform the criminals into upright citizens as well.

Wonder Woman has special powers and weapons such as:

  • Magic tiara - also functions as a boomerang
  • Magic bracelets - unbreakable and bullet proof
  • Utility earrings - allow wearer to breathe in outer space
  • Lasso of Truth - When bound with her lasso, criminals have no choice but to tell the truth. The lasso is unbreakable and infinitely stretchable.
  • Invisible plane - invisible or really so translucent as to appear invisible. As real-world technology advances, the invisible plane becomes an invisible jet.

Ok, that's enough background history. Now let's fast-forward to the '70s. I remember following Lynda Carter as Wonder Woman in her '70s television series. Every girl wanted to be Wonder Woman, or at least be like her. And why not? She was beautiful, a luscious, sexy, curvy brunette, I adored her sexy outfit, her Lasso Of Truth, her killer blings. And she's a princess to boot. Come on, how could you NOT want to be her? She fought the bad guys and literally kicked their butts.

Wonder Woman was a super hero. A female super hero before Halle Berry's Storm in X-men came to the big screen. How cool is that?

Linda Carter was Wonder Woman 1975 - 1979. But before Linda Carter's TV series, Wonder Woman's first appearance in live-action television was a television movie made in 1974 for ABC with Cathy Lee Crosby as Wonder Woman, but ABC did not pick up the pilot. And why is that, you might ask. Well, TV movie Wonder Woman did not wear the comic book costume, did not demonstrate any superhuman abilities and her "secret identity" of Diana Prince was not all that secret. What the heck were they thinking?

So, for me Linda Carter was Wonder Woman.

New Wonder Woman TV Series - NBC said NO

A remake of the original show starring Adrianne Palicki and produced by David E. Kelley which was set to premiere in the fall of 2011, was nixed by NBC before the pilot got aired. Why you might ask? I know you don't care, but I'll tell you anyway.

Here are some reasons why NBC said no to the new Wonder Woman TV series:

First, the custome.

DC Comics folks wanted to change Linda Carter's Wonder Woman costume. They wanted a newer more hip getup for our superheroine. So here's what they came up with, designed by DC co-publisher and "X-Men" artist Jim Lee.

Left: Linda Carter's Wonder Woman costume designed by Donfeld - Right: New Wonder Woman costumer designed by Jim Lee - New Wonder Woman Adrianne Palicki New Wonder Woman Costume

What the heck was that? The women were outraged. "What did you do with Wonder Woman's boots?" The men jumped in as well. "Dude, what were you thinking? We want the star-spangled booty shorts back!"

So back to the drawing board. We didn't hear about the new costume for a while as there were more important issues in hand, like who will be the new Wonder Woman.

Second, Adrianne Palicki.

In February 2011, it was leaked that "Friday Night Lights" actress Adrianne Palicki is set to play Wonder Woman in NBC's reboot of the DC Comics superheroine. All together now, WHO?

Adrianne Palicki was part of the cast ensemble of "Friday Night Lights" about the community of Dillon, Texas and how the high school football team affects the town as a whole. Guess what part Palicki played. She played Tyra Collette as the town vixen who goes from Tim's occasional girlfriend to Landry's lover following Landry's defense of her from a rapist. Never mind who Tim and Landry were.

Palicki also had long stints on "Supernatural" and "South Beach" and most recently appeared in Fox's country "Lone Star," which was canceled after two episodes because of low ratings. You may also have seen her in "Legion." Nope, nope, nope and nope.

According to a very reliable source (wink, wink), Palicki was the only actress invited to test for the role. Veteran producer David E. Kelley must have seen something special in Palicki, so that's good enough for me.

So, Palicki, 27, will be following in Lynda Carter's red boot-clad footsteps. Or, is she?

Because here is what Warner Bros. television released as the official image of the new Wonder Woman Adrianne Palicki in her new costume for the upcoming fall show sometime in March 2011.

Third, back to the custome.

Again, the fans were outrage! The boots are back, but why are they blue? Is this some kind of a joke? Online commenters said that Palicki's blue vinyl pants and blue boots resembled footed pajamas, and her patent-vinyl outfit "looks cheap" and "probably squeaks every time she moves" wrote blogs. Some even called the Amazonian princess' new garb as a trashy Comic-Con knock-off, stripper costume and unpatriotic. And those were from the women.

Men, on the other hand, all agreed that Adrianne Palicki looked drop dead gorgeous in her new Wonder Woman costume, but... but, wouldn't she look better in the star-spangled booty shorts? they moaned.

Well, apparently the studio listened. There hasn't been an official updated image of Palicki in her new Wonder Woman costume yet. But, photos have been surfacing from the set of of David E. Kelly's pilot showing Palicki in what appear to be cotton or spandex pants, instead of vinyl, with stars running down the side of the pant leg, and guess what else? The return of Wonder Woman's signature red boots. Yay!

Sorry, guys, still no sign of the star spangled booty shorts to date.

And here are some more answers as to why NBC said NO to the new Wonder Woman TV series:

  • The violence in the pilot is “over-the-top”: “Wonder Woman would kill people without even blinking an eye.” No kidding!
  • Fight scenes are “adequate,” and involve a lot of lassoing and wire work. More fight scenes, more fight scenes!
  • Adrianne Palicki (Wonder Woman) and Tracie Thoms (Wonder Woman’s assistant) acquit themselves well, or about as well as they could given the “not very good” script. Ok, so it was not Adrianne Palicki's fault after all.
  • Justin Bruening (Steve Trevor), on the other hand, isn’t quite up to par: “It’s like watching a cardboard standout.” Who?
  • There are two different Wonder Woman costumes - the “velvety” “pants-suit” and a more classic bikini bottom suit that we haven’t seen before. The men said the latter is “a million times better.” Again, no kidding!
  • “Diana Prince,” the ordinary-girl alter ego of Wonder Woman, is a couch potato, who sits around her apartment watching The Notebook, eating popcorn, and cuddling with her cat. Wha? They don't like cats?
  • Perhaps most damning of all, drums please! tadadadadada.... The pilot “doesn’t even feel like Wonder Woman… it feels like a David E. Kelley show.” Again, was it the cat?

So there you go... no new Wonder Woman for you!

The cancelled show is not as good as the original one. The ratings may be low for the show as it was with The Playboy Club.

Justin Bruening is -- or was -- the new Knight Rider from 2008. Which was a decent show. But with these reboots, so much energy is put into making things new, that they don't pay attention to what he fans really want. Like with the Bionic Woman reboot ... Fns were screaming for Six Million Dollar Man and/or Bionic Woman dvds and/or a feature movie for decades. And when the chance to bring the concept back, they totally ignore the history ... Ugh! Oh by the way, nice article. :)
