Yu-Gi-Oh! Season 0

The "Hidden" Season of Yu-Gi-Oh!

You all probably remember the Yu-Gi-Oh series from TV, but did you know that there was a "zero" season. aired in 1998 in Japan only? This is actually the first season of the series, but since it was absent from our TV's, people started to treat is as a missing/hidden season or just season 0.

Unlike the more childish theme of Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel monsters, this season was more dark themed and Yami Yugi was not exactly a guy you would like to piss off. The level of violence was reduced between the manga and the anime, but it was still a difference "experience". Also, this series did not focus on the card game, but rather on all sorts of games.

A Little Bit About The Show

Episodes: 27
Genres: Action, Comedy, Fantasy, Game, Shounen
Producers: Toei Animation, NAS
Rating: PG-13 - Teens 13 or older

Yu-Gi-Oh! is loosely connected to the Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters series we used to watch, thought both are based on the same manga. While Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters is mostly about the card game, Yu-Gi-Oh! introduces you to all sorts of games, one of which actually has it's own GBA game (Dungeon Dice Monsters).

The series revolves around Yugi, a 10th grader who likes games and puzzles, but due to his short appearance have almost no friends and also bullied by his classmates. Yugi's favorite puzzle is the "Millennium Puzzle", an ancient artifact shaped like a pyramid, which he is unable to solve. One day, after a thug named Ushio threatens Yugi with a knife, he is able to finally finish the millennium puzzle, and returns as Yami to punish the guy.

In this series, Yami Yugi doesn't challenge people to a duel of Duel Monsters. Instead, he would challenge them to a Shadow Game, or Yami no Game, where he would then explain the rules. However, the person in question would cheat and the Doors of Darkness will open, thus Yami Yugi would do a Penalty Game upon the person, and that which they obsess the most would be their nightmare. Duel Monsters was not the main point of the show but has been played a few times.

The original Yu-Gi-Oh manga

This is the original manga the "Zero" season was based on. This is not a kids friendly manga, as Yami Yugi actually kills people in that one. There are a total of 7 volumes that this season was based on.

This manga is even better than the Anime, as it's not as censored, and has much more to offer than the series that are to follow.

Want some example of Yami's madness? Well, let's just say that in one chapter he set up one guy on fire using a Vodka and a lighter!

Main Characters

Yugi Moto Yugi is a 10th grader, but looks a lot younger due to his short figure. He is usually teased by his classmates because he always plays games and solves puzzles by himself, and his only wish is to make real friends. When he solves an ancient egyptian puzzle he is granted all the powers of darkness. Now when confronted with danger and injustice, he transforms into a much darker and dangerous form, and proceeds to dish out the justice and punishment for those who so richly deserve it. Yugi and the friends he acquires with the help of the puzzle are unaware of his dark alter ego.

Yami Yugi Yami ('dark' in Japanese) is an ancient Egyptian spirit of the Pharaoh that dwells inside the millennium puzzle. He possess the power of darkness and punishes those who "trespasses his soul", or in other words tries to harm Yugi and his friends. Unlike his more friendly self in "Yu-Gi-Oh duelist", in this series he is a more dark character, and he makes people go crazy and/or die if they lose in his shadow games. Later on he becomes a little more tamed the more Yugi's friendships are developed.

Katsuya Jonouchi Jonouchi used to tease and bully Yugi, until Yugi (or rather Yami) saved him and Honda from a dangerous thug. After that they become close friends, and Jonouchi hangs a lot with Yugi. Jonouchi's past is not simple as it involves a drunk father and gang wars.

Hiroto Honda Honda is a friend of Jonouchi and also became friends with Yugi after the thug incident. In this version he is a little more active and has no problems to exchange punches, if it's for the purpose of saving his friends.

Mazaki Anzu Anzu is a friend of Yugi, and he is secretly in love with her. Her dream is to become a dancer in America, and for that purpose she is doing part time jobs.

Seto Kaiba Kaiba is a genius student and gamer who also runs Kaiba corp, after he took over the company and pushed his stepfather away. Kaiba has a little brother, Mokuba and their past is not simple as they where both left alone after their parents died and their close family took over their assets. Seto and Mokuba where adopted by the rich and evil Kaiba, after Seto won in a chess game against him. Kaiba pushes Seto to his limits, and he ends up being as crazy and self-centered and at some point doesn't even care about his brother any longer. He becomes obsessed with winning Yugi in Duel Monsters (the only appearance of this game in the series and manga btw!), after he lost the first time to him and was sent by Yami to experience "Death".

Bakura, Ryou Bakura is a nice and gentle nature guy who transfers to Yugi's class from a foreign country. He becomes friends with Yugi right away, as he also likes games. Bakura also possesses an Egyptian artifact called the "Millennium Ring", which unfortunately for Bakura, is also possessed with an ancient spirit. But if Yami is, in the bottom line, not a bad guy, Yami Bakura is a murderous spirit that enjoys the suffering of others.

I read this manga long after I watched yugioh duel masters as a kid. Even after all this, I say the original yugioh season 0 is the best

Forgot to mention Miho, the other female character who takes part in this series. She's a pretty basic cutesy anime girl.
