Does music affect your mood, or does your mood affect your choice in music?

A little of both, if you have certain music for a mood there you go, but if the music is coming from other sources such as Christmas music in shops to get you in the spirit to spend more, lol, or driving beside a car blasting rap...unless you like rap that can really affect a mood of I could scream.

It can go either way for me.  More often than not, my mood affects my music choice.

Sometimes both, but mostly my mood chooses my music.

If I'm angry, I listen to Alanis Morissette.
If I'm sad, I listen to slow songs.
If I'm energetic, I listen to stuff that is easy to dance to, no matter what kind of dance it is.  Could be rap, could be line-dancing, anything.

I would have to say that my mood affects what I listen to.  I always change up the songs I listen to depending on my condition.

I have experienced both, times when music lifted my mood and times when my mood determined my music. We all have certain songs that we like to listen to when you are experiencing saddness, happiness, etc., and then we have also experienced moments where music has helped us wakeup, focus, get pumped, etc. The great thing about music is there is a song for every occasion.

I think both statements are correct.  One is not exclusive of the other.  If you are in a peaceful mood, you probably like soothing music.  If you are in a happy mood, you might like happy music.

On the other side, quiet introspective music can put you into a more peaceful mood. Cheery, happy music can give you an uplift in spirit.   If you feel irritable, jangly music can be quite upsetting.

So:  Yes!  Music can alter your mood.  And yes!  Your mood can dictate what types of music you prefer at any given time.

Have you ever noticed that when music does not match your mood, you tend to blot it out and not hear it?

My mood affects my music choice. But sometimes I will choose uplifting music if I am feeling down.

I'd say both. There are times when I am in the mood of listening to some particular songs and then again there times when I just listen to some songs and my mood suddenly changes.

I choose music according to my mood ... but however sometime any track playing at distant place can make you relax ...

    and after that

I simply go to you tube search that track and listen it ...

(Generally in the early morning I hear some chants and all and later on loud and fast - perfect way to start the day).

Good freaking question!  I think your mood effects the music you listen to.  If you are in a bad mood and hear a happy song you will make a choice depending on the type of person you are.  If you want to wallow in your bad mood for awhile you will want to get away from that song, turn it off, move away from it , etc.  If you are the type that gets happy when you hear happy music you will want to hear it, turn it up, etc.  All goes back to your mood.  It's like what comes first, the chicken or the egg?

I love music. I know for me it works both ways. If I am listening to a happy song I feel happy. If it is depressing it makes me feel sad. Whatever mood I am in is what I choose when I am listening to music. Great question.

well both, my mood chooses the music i play or listen to. Then my mood takes the road that the music leads to. I guess that's what happens to me. XD

In my case it is music that affects my mood. I can go from depressed to super charged in a matter of minutes thanks to some piece of music that influences my mood.

Both actually, but sometimes i put on some really happy music when i am down aswell just to make me happy again

Since you asked, and I pondered upon it.........

when I am sad, anxious or troubled in some way, I perfer piano music.......

when I am happy, excited, thankful, feeling young, I want something peppy and fast paced.

My mood determines the music that I want to hear.

Music definately affects my mood.  If I listen to music it can bring me out of a funk and put me into a better mood.

I listen to music before work and I become more energized and ready for the day.

Differnt types of music puts me in different moods but I can say music alone defianetly affects my mood.

West Coast Rap gets me pumped up and ready for my day
Smooth R&B gets me relaxed and ready to chill.

I agree with other posters here, that it's both.
There are times where I seek out energetic music or depressing music based on how I feel, and times where I just listen to something that's available and have an emotional response to it.  I think that's totally natural, but not everyone is the same.

  19. Becca Lopez profile image59

I would say they effect each other. Some times a happy song will put you in a better mood or it can keep you in a good mood. If you hear a sad or depressing song it can make you feel that way or you may choose to listen to that song because you are feeling that way.

Both - simultaneously! If you're familiar with my hubs, then you know I listen to bubblegum dance music. Listening to it makes me cheerful, and then because I am cheerful I listen to bubblegum dance music!

I'm with the majority here, finding that it's both. Obviously at times I play music that caters to my mood, but at other times, I might put something on to change it.

Going to the gym is a good example - I might take a nap and be feeling lazy shortly before I head over, but with the right music (i.e., no Taylor Swift, Jonas Brothers or Black Eyed Peas, please), I can get myself focused and ready to go pretty quickly.

Excellent question! I'm with most of the people here, it goes both ways. If I go decide to put on some music, then my mood affects my choice. But if I came across music playing or start hearing music, the music has the ability to affect my mood.

Good question, I haven't really thought about it like that. I would have to say  its both. When music affects your mood I feel like I can do anything especially when its inspiring music. When my mood affects my choice of music my process of thinking is usually  pen-pointed because of my attitude.

i think its a little bit of both music effects your mood but at the same time your mood can help you to choose the type of music you choose to listen to

I think music does affect my mood tremendously. I can be driving in the car and a sad song can come on the radio and I find myself getting a little teary eyed. I also agree that when I am in a certain mood I listen to different types of music.

Mood can cheer me up when I am down, but more often I choose which music I want to listen to at any given time-as a result I have differnt genres in my cd changer and change all of them from time to time. But I always have  something classical, something pop or rock, something jazz or broadway, etc. I always have a Sinatra cd because I can listen to him no matter what mood I'm in.

  27. ibbarkingmad profile image60

Yes. The answer is yes to both. When I have no control over the music and it is something negative I feel affected. When I do have a choice and I feel negative I have been known to choose negative music. Same goes for positive music.

  28. jencooper profile image60
    jencooperposted 12 years ago

Definitely both!  It just depends on what mood you want smile  If you want to stay in the mood you are in you choose the music to fit that.  If you want to change the mood you are in you choose the music to make that happen.

  30. Melind profile image59

Definitely both but I find that more often than not my mood determines what music I'm going to listen to and then music either alleviates or elevates my mood.

I think your mood affects your choice of music. You often hear about people listening to sad love songs when they have a break up, and other listening to more dance music than normal when they want to party~

Both. Sometimes music lifts my mood up and sometimes I feel like listening to a specific type of music.

Its both for me. I love jazz, but if I listen to a jazz song that has a lot of saxophone, I tend to get a little depressed. If I am "up" I tend to listen to something that makes me MOVE !

I am a music lover so it is definitely both for me. I have many playlists on You Tube for my moods. smile

Examples are love, sentimental, grief, nostalgic, rock, classical, and specific artists. I listened to Pink Floyd a couple of days ago because I was perplexed about life and that music seems to go with my mood. lol~ Moody Blues are another one for that kind of mood.

Then there is the music that triggers emotions and events when I hear it. A love song may jet me back to a time of dating that special someone. The Chipmunks Christmas songs reminds me of my girls when they were young and had to listen to them every night before Christmas. smile They love the music even today in their 30's. Silent night takes me back to a childhood of mystical wonder at the birth of my Savior and the love I've always felt from that song.

So, music does both for me and I'm so glad we have music!

I think it depends on how you listen to music. I love listening to music with my eyes closed so I can focus on the lyrics and the melody. I'm in a good mood when I listen to music that I love or have been thinking about. Music always puts me in a better mood than I was in in most cases.

Music affects my mood and my choice of music can a affect my mood.

Music affect I hear upbeat lets go just gotta dance music then I'm happy go lucky and acting silly. I hear slow sad songs then I become withdrawn and sad and start thiking negative things.

My choice affects my mood because I can be happy and play a sad slow meaningful song and then I'm there in the sad moment too.

It's much harder for me to become happy once I'm sad.

if i listen to a romantic/slow song... i feel good,..

  42. Nurfninja profile image60

well it's both, it depends on what kind of person it is.  Most people make choices based on their emotions and then, if people let the music "strike a chord" emotionally, then it will probably affect their mood.
