What made bands like KISS such worldwide phenomenons?  I was too young, so I missed it. Any insight?

Kiss was a great show band, their stage shows were awsome and you never forgot. And music was differnt then, it meant more and was closer to where your head was at. The true phenoms were the Beatles, The Doors, Jimi Hendricks They were the early ones who jumped up on the world and said "listen to me!". Janis Joplin wasn't a "celebrity" she was a living legend. KISS took the art of Kabuki to the next level and became a new artform with rock music.
There was an obvious need in the world for a new and dramatic artform and Rock'N'Roll provided it. Bob Dylan the grandfather of superstars can still draw the masses. Music and performance were a loud, penetrating thing that happened in the 60' and 70's and it seems only the Bands and people from the era can duplicate it. I don't believe it will ever happen again, it was an interstellar flash in the pan of history. But I loved it!  Peter

Basically, what Peter Lumetta said. But a lot of parents were concerned because their music was so based at teens, their lyrics were somewhat disturbing. Listening to songs about dating underraged girls like in Christine Sixteen made a lot of people worry, especially as the band got older.

However, it was a lot better than AC/DC's sexism on tape, and parody metal band GWAR was highly inspired by KISS. If not for the makeup, the style of music and general songwriting, bands such as Judas Priest, Motorhead or Iron Maiden wouldn't be as successful today. And without them, Metal wouldn't be as highly devolved as it is today.

The secrecy of their identities, their showmanship live in concert, and the songs were absolute party songs!!!  I first saw them live in 1979, and will never forget the spectacle...these guys were almost 7 feet tall in their boots, Simmons with his fire and blood, Frehley's smoking guitar, Stanley could sing and dance like crazy, Peter Criss had a drum riser that rotated along with these thirty foot tall cats on either side,  flash pots, lasers and confetti...all with great music...was like a traveling party!
