Who are the great female guitarist?

Guitar playing is too male dominated on the technical end, but there are some great female guitarist in every genre, could anyone chime in with some great female guitar player names?

Waw you just made me realize what a male dominated arena famous guitar players is. It never crossed my mind until just now.
I struggle to even think of women that play guitar and the only ones I can even bring to ming are Katie Melua, Cheryl Crow and Katy Tunstall. But since I know very little about guitars then I can't tell you how good they are.

Maybe I should expand my knowledge on this subject, as I feel a bit ignorant at the moment. Lita Ford is the first to come to mind though. What a great, thought provoking question.

That's an excellent question. Like others who've replied before me, it makes me realise how little I've considered it up to now.
Emmy Lou Harris acquits herself pretty well (imo), for example in her concerts with Mark Knopfler, who sets a very high standard of guitar playing (again, imo).
I also love to watch Suzi Quatro showing us why chicks belong upfront in rock.
But in both cases, their overall performing and visual appeal (to my eye) may be overshadowing their guitar playing skills...

That is an awesome question, and I am also going to spend a little time looking into this. I also thought of Sheryl Crow, Joan Jett and so on. But if you have ever watched Michael Jackson's "This is It" you will see an excellent young rock guitarist that plays with him. She rocks! At the moment, however, my favorite female guitarist is Gabriela, of "Rodrigo y Gabriela" Insanely talented.

Canadian classical guitarist Liona Boyd I would say. She has been at or near the top of her genre for over thirty years now. Also there is the late great Emily Remler, who unfortunately died at the age of 32.
The young lady that used to play with Michael Jackson, Jennifer Batten was also a phenomenal guitarist and teacher. She was steeped in classical training which she then applied to rock and pop, touring with Michael Jackson's band.

Somebody already mentioned my choice, Jennifer Batten, by far the best I've seen, in fact she actually shared the stage on 1 tour with another pretty good guitar player, Jeff Beck. I met a drummer several years ago that used to go out with her but said he had to give her up because she never put down the damn guitar :-P

I count a female guitarist to be a good female guitarist if she's a good guitarist - if she's a pretty good guitarist 'for a girl' then, for me, that doesn't count. And I count 'good' to be if they (of course) actually play really well, have been... read more

Memphis Minnie, one of the legendary blues artists of the 1920's-1940's.  She wrote "When the Levee Breaks", later covered by Led Zeppelin.  Check her stuff out on Youtube!

Wow, I'm the first person to say Bonnie Raitt?  Bonnie's one of the few women who plays slide guitar -- AND plays it better than most guys!  She's mind-blowing.

Nancy Wilson of Heart is my pick for rock guitar. There are of course others. Lita Ford in the 1980s was pretty good.

I'm thinking more of a rock genre: Bonnie Raitt, Joni Mitchell, Joan Jett, Chrissy Hynde of The Pretenders, and Nancy Wilson from Heart. Orianthi is the very talented guitarist that played w/ Michael Jackson. Tal Wilkenfeld is a bass guitarist- plays w/ Jeff Beck- she is awesome!

I'd say Bonnie Raitt and Rory Block.  Both well respected by thier peers.

Definitely Orianthi is up there.  She was lead guitarist for Michael Jackson's 'This is It' (before he died) and is also making a name for herself through a solo career.  In my opinion, she's a decent singer, but an amazing guitarist.  Great technique and great style.
