What came first -the egg or the chicken?

   What came first -the egg or the chicken?
   
   I have always wondered about this. Have heard this question being asked since I was a kid. Till now I have no definite answer.
   What do you think?

   Well, there isn't a definitive answer because it's designed not to have one, I think.
   
   It can make us reflect, like all rhetorical questions.
   
   But if it's 100% necessary to get a concrete answer, I'd conclude that the chicken came first and not the egg by using a comparable example of creating life: Fertilized human "eggs" that become humans are not capable of surviving outside of the human womb. Chicken eggs can. However, both start creating life before they're outside of the reproductive organs. Since in humans and some other species no birth can happen without the nourishing, mature body, I'd elect that as what came first.

   This is an age old question and one that has puzzled us for quite a long time. It is my own belief that all creatures that swim, fly, walk and crawl upon and above this earth were once established creatures that have evolved from very minute cells that over time(Millions of years) became adult creatures and developed a male and female variety, with the ability to procreate with egg and sperm(The majority).Perhaps they had the ability to divide into more sections of original cell structure and evolved into paired mating organisms much later in their development. Because most organisms require a female egg and a male sperm in order to combine and form a new organism, It makes more sense to believe that there were more developed adult forms of creatures having this ability to mate and have offspring. Because eggs require nutrition and warmth and an adult organism form in the beginning, I have concluded that the lazy feathered couch potato chicken evolved and later got lonesome and paired with a mate and had a few eggs, to kick start the whole doggone aggravating, questioning all over again.

   Chickens first (male and female) wahehehe... Common sense there will be no eggs without the rooster fertilizing the egg, right?

   Chickens evolved from reptiles and reptiles lay/laid eggs. So the egg came first.

   The egg. Chickens are evolved from other creatures, and ancient relative of the chicken is a type of dinosaur whose name escapes me. Since dinosaurs also hatched from eggs then I would say it is most definitely the egg.

   Two choices: Creationism, God made the chicken first, it walked across the road, laid an egg, and Adam had breakfast.
   Evolution: Something developed cells that eventually became an egg that became a chicken...much more boring alternative.

   I suppose there are many theological and scientific influences involved in the answer to your inquiry...however it seems to me the chicken had to have come first.  An egg in of itself would not produce a chicken without fertilization...

       I believe in evolution and creationism. I still believe that the egg came first, it is not a one or the other choice. The way the Bible describes creation it leaves a lot of room for evolution.

       I don't understand how you can think the egg came first if you believe in the Bible because God made it all complete, it says he made the birds and the fish, not the eggs! There is no evidence for the gap theory in the Bible.

       The Bible says that God made the kinds. The birds of the sky after their kind, the creatures of the earth after their kind, also 2- 7 of each kind boarded Noah's Ark. We can not honestly deny micro evolution, but it does not disprove creation either.

       If you're talking micro - micro is observable, but macro and micro are very different. Micro explains variations of the kinds: dogs and wolves are the same kind, just like zebras and horses. But this is not mutation, it's adaptation and degradation.

    The egg came first. The assumption is that the egg must be a chicken egg.  If Darwin and the Theory of Evolution is correct, then eggs evolved long before chickens.  For example, the crocodile is said to be a prehistoric animal.  It therefore precedes the chicken.  A crocodile lays eggs.   The answer is therefore, 'The egg came first.'
    
    I rest my case.

    I have two answers to this question; The first is the philosophical answer; "A circle has no beginnings" This from the hand of J.K.Rowling when a Hogwarts student asked, Which came first, the Phoenix or the ashes?
    My personal answer to which came first; The Rooster.

    Thanks guys for the answers.
    I believe that the chicken came first. My reason being that as a process of the evolution, the cells came into being. As a cell develops it has to surely nurture into an animal, just like everything else that has been evolved. Following Darwin's theory of evolution.
    
    But as all of you have said, we all have different opinions and we have a strong reason for it too.
    
    So i guess the question still lies unanswered.....
