What can a composer do in order to get more inspiration for writing?
Live a full life and draw from life experiences- great love, great suffering or sorrow.
Meditate daily to clear the mind
Practice, play and listen to great composers
Practice play and listen to favourite composers.
Practice and compose with friends of like mind
Most of all, be yourself
Think that's it
That was beautiful. I have never really learned to meditate. I bet it would help me a lot.
The best thing you can do is just show up. Make an appointment with yourself on a regular basis. This time is set aside specifically for composing music. Start with a musical phrase of 3-5 notes. Then play with those notes, modifying the musical phrase. Try these techniques...
1) Repeat the phrase
2) Raise the pitch of the phase
3) Lower the pitch of the phrase
4) Invert the notes
5) Play the notes in reverse order
Some wise council there! Making an appointment with myself each day for composing is a great idea. Also, I like some of these other ideas you posted as well. Thank you! I will have to take a look at them again and try them out. Thanks!
Creative people of all disciplines usually have a need to stir their already sensitised emotions. Just being alive is enough sometimes!! All the events that we witness directly or indirectly can have an effect, from which a melody or a few notes emerge. Human psychology and all its myriad workings can be a source of ideas.
Contact with nature is often a time of enlightenment - walk into a sunset, be amongst a flock of birds, sit on a cliff top, walk through a wood..see a young creature, see a dead creature. The mystery of beauty and decay is a universal theme.
Books are another. Read a poem, a short story and who knows what might be created as a result?
Those are some really good ideas! I think I will try a few of them! Thanks!!!
