No offense, but why the idol worship of a "royal" baby even in the US?

I get British have their traditions or whatever and I don't mean to offend anyone, but all over the US media is the "royal" baby news.  We have so many important things we could discuss and I have seen "royal baby" anticipation for weeks on end.  It's irritating.  Babies have been born by the billions.  Someone help me understand why this kid is inherently more special just because Kate had her?  I don't get this mindset of idolizing certain people.  What do Royals contribute to modern society? Why does the US media pay so much attention to it?  Again, no offense, I truly want to understand!

I don't understand this hysteria for Royals and their offspring. We appear to need other people to look up to or the media wants us to believe that.
Celebrities lead more interesting lives than the rest of us mere mortals? LOL!

lol, some celebrities I'm sure do - but the royals? What exciting, ground breaking thing have any of them done? I see them as the richest welfare recipients on earth adding another dependent. Maybe I'm wrong.. I just don't get it lol.

Agreed. The birth of the Royal baby is just news. Not the most important news. There are way more important issues in the world and in United States than reporting this.

agreed, if it was just a birth announcement fine - but our media has been going on and on about it for weeks.  It's a birth for heaven's sakes! smile Millions more will occur around the world, none of them will be news.

It's just the media.  News is news. They print what draws attention.  Like them or not the Royals have been and always will be in the spotlight. The leader of this country gets the same coverage for their off-springs, just less glamorized. Maybe a crown, English history, or other connections to our British ancestors makes us still drawn to Great Britain. Avoiding taxes really worked out well for them. Wish they could see us now taxed beyond belief.

It's lazy media if you ask me, pay attention to frivolous BS and distracting people with silliness when the world has real problems they could be covering but don't.  Ironically the BBC is a much better news outlet than most American media.

I don't understand why England has a monarchy to begin with.  The queen does NOTHING. Yet the British pay taxes and keep these people wealthy, and revere them, and all Princess Kate does is look good.  Why do the British waste their money supporting these people?  They don't do ANYTHING.  The Prime Minister runs the country.  It's ridiculous.

I agree.  Kate is pretty much a brood mare, what other purposes does she actually serve? I know that sounds harsh, but it angers me that these people suck up resources and attention and for what? they serve no actual use.

Why? There's another interesting point here. There's an hub also on this topic by our Nell Rose. I also wonder why there's so much talk about them since much more earlier (say since one year) on all web sites and media.
I hope it is just like fans taking interest in each and every movement of their celebrities. They are free to do whatever they like and we should not make them feel annoyed.

true people can idolize whoever they want.  Royal "news" in the US media irritates me. It's irrelevant yet front page, not relegated to celebrity gossip sections where it belongs. It's presented as though it were actually important news; it's not.

To many Americans, royalty is elevated to almost supernatural status.  We do not have anything equivalent to royal families with the exception of perhaps the Kennedys.  There are some Americans despite the premise of a classless culture and society, pine for some type of royalty and the Windsors are it so to speak.

The royal baby is only an extension of the worship of royalty among some Americans.  They also view royalty as exemplifying class, taste, civilization, and culture  Royalty is also viewed as beyond reproach and deemed untouchable in a positive sense.  Royalty is furthermore considered to be beyond human and "not like us".

Many Americans worship the wealthy because they are seen as better and more than the average person.  This is evident in the worship of celebrities, sports figures, highly successful people from all work of life, noted political dynasties such as the Kennedys, and/or royalty.  Wealthier babies, especially noted ones, are always the subjects of coverage. After all, they are  A NAME in one way or another.  Yes, classism was, is, and shall forever be.

True. I think of the history of this family and how they've attained their "status" through robbing the citizens for centuries and I am baffled how Brits not only subsidize the monarchy still, but don't rise up against it and all it has stood for.

What I don't get-- besides the points you've made about the British aristocracy-- is why sports figures are worshiped inspite of mostly playing children's games and being paid enormous sums of money-- and often living extravagantly.

I will take the royals all over the news than the Kardashians anyday! At least we get a break from those yahoos for a couple of days.

In all seriousness, the royals are obsessed over as much as any other celebrity I suppose.  In this day and age, the word "celebrity" is used loosely to mean anyone famous, but it doesn't take much to become famous these days; a sex tape, a big butt, a little luck, and some timely decisions can get you plastered all over the front page.

While the royals don't have a reality show or a movie coming out, they do get their fame from being relics of the past. I would rather people obsess over some history than some nouveau riche wanna be's that take their clothes off when ratings on twitter go down and who probably couldn't count to one hundred if you gave them three tries.

lol I hear you and I hate them too, but we don't subsidize them the way the British do the royals. Could you imagine being taxed to support the Kartrashians? I think it's more what the "royals' represent that irks me about it the most.

I'll never understand why anyone gives a crap about the stupid Khardashian family, and that crazy Bruce Jenner.

I'm not sure why news outlets seem to focus on the royal family so much. Since they are ratings-driven, we only have ourselves to blame for tuning in. But, even though I don't really follow the stories, I do think it's nice to hear news that isn't all doom and gloom. Depressing/infuriating politics tends to dominate 24/hr news, so to see a birth getting attention (even though it doesn't affect me) is a nice reprieve.

There's plenty of good news in the world of people actually doing things to better themselves and mankind besides breeding.  Too bad the media never wants to focus on that.

Why the idol worship of any celebrity baby? Sure the British royals get royal treatment, and people are curious about them, but why do the Kardashians, Britney Spears, and any other Hollywood female you see with a belly bump make front page news? Well, front page on the tabloids anyway. Pardon my cynicism, but having a baby, any baby whether royal, celebrity or  commoner, is just a natural body function of any couple or woman who want to procreate. I'm not sure that the newspapers, except for small-town weeklys, bother to run the birth's column anymore. What's the big deal? My conclusion, it's just the media in its usual role of creating news. I don't think it is overdoing it to run one story and include a photo, if available, but the days of hype are nauseating.

This is just one of the tools used to maintain the wide gap between the masses of people in the worker/slave/poverty mode and the super wealthy elite class.  The super wealthy do not like competition, and so they’re always working on many fronts to keep the common people believing that great success and wealth is for someone else with the right genes/upbringing/education/connections and not for themselves.  The super wealthy own the major media, and so they carefully tailor it to condition the people into believing just what they want them to believe.  This keeps the masses in their place and limits super success to those “in the gene pool” or “in the club” - in the elite secret societies of the world.

Your asking of this question indicates that you are breaking free of this hold - congratulations!  There are some good hubs on this if you search for “dumbing down”.

I agree with you.  What boggles my mind is why so many people continue to buy into it in this day and age.

Yes, but the good news is that an increasing number of people are waking up to this now.  This is indicated even in the top two answers from Stacie L and Akriti Mattu.
