I want to give a guitar as a gift to my sister who want to learn how to play it -- she is a beginner.

Make sure the neck is comfortable, and generally the guitar is not too big. Yamaha acoustics are usually good, or maybe a Baby Taylor.

If your sister is a complete beginner it may be a good idea to buy her a resonably cheap classical guitar (with nylon strings). You can pich up a good one for a few dollars. The nylon strings will not hurt her fingertips like steel strings will. Also if she decides not to continue playing the guitar, you have not lost a small fortune by buying an expensive model.

an electric guitar is usually best for a beginner - they are easier to play, which will encourage them to practice more.  Some sort of strat copy is probably best, Cort make great and inexpensive electric guitars.

I can only answer from personal experience.  My wife bought the Esteban package you see on the TV commercials.  It was for our son's birthday.

I was afraid it would be a little cheesy but the quality is excellent.  It came with a dvd training program and a little amp.  The guitar alone is probably worth what we paid for the whole package.

He's still playing that guitar but he wanted an electric guitar for his next birthday.   We got him a Fender Squier from Musicians Friend.  Again, this is an excellent guitar for the price.

You can see him playing the Fender with the Esteban amp at my hub.

The Yamaha acoustics are great (that's what I play on). They just feel good.

For an electric guitar? I would say that my favorite is the Schecter Hellraiser C7... but any Schecter is great. I am also a big fan of the Ibanez Xiphos.
