Have you tried building a radio station on Pandora.com?  You put in the music you like, and it will come up with similar bands and songs.  You thumb-up the ones you like, thumb-down what you don't.  It's a great way to discover new artists.

Go with the classics: Doors, Deep Purple, the Eagles, Queen, Santana, even Jethro Tull (a bit folkish in parts but what MUSIC!).

    Drew Breezy,
I just got back from Bonnaroo, a huge music festival in Tennessee so I'll make a couple recommendations based on live performances.

First off. The latest Ben Harper release is straight up rock music. No Steal My Kisses business here. ROCK N ROLL!

I also saw the White Rabbits, a 6 piece band out of NYC, originally from the mid-west I believe. Anywho, no screaming here, just some good rock. A little more poppy, but still rock.

And one final suggestion. In my opinion the best rock band out now. The Drive By Truckers. If you get a chance to check them out. DEAR GOD SIR, do not pass that up!!

Let me know if you check any of them out.
    Cheers.

Hot Hot Heat, Carolina Liar, My Chemical Romance, AFI, Seether, Foo Fighters (obvious) System of a Down (and Serj's side projects)

Some are more "rock" than others, but worth taking a listen anyway

op said he doesn't want anything with screaming in it. Foofighters. System of A Down. But they're good though.

He said he doesn't want hardcore screaming stuff. They aren't screamo bands. Underoath is the only screamo band I like. And Snow Patrol? Not quite 'Rock & Roll' but a good band, especially live smile

If you like great vocals, I recommend Evanescence.

Pearl Jam and Nickelback...however, Pandora is great for a lot of options in rock music.  Good luck

What bands would you recommend with strong lyrics?

If you want lyrics with musicality, to just sit in the dark and escape for a while, then the Doors and Pink Floyd would be my choice.

I've always been partial to Rush.  Lyrics are poetry to music.

Certainly no hard feelings.  I had never thought of it like that before.  Kinda funny and I had to laugh while listening to Rush driving to Florida (in Macon, GA right now).  Nice thing about having kids is that you can suck out the leftover helium of their balloons after they stop floating.  Do too many and you get a headache, though.

Also reminded me:  Q95 in Indianapolis and Bob & Tom used to do helium Mondays years ago.  Brought back some memories.  Ha Ha.
