Cripple Creek by The Band-a question of lyrics

My friend and I have been arguing about song lyrics. We checked the Internet and have gotten no help on this.

Is the lyric "take a load off Annie" or "take a load off Fanny" because I can hear both?  Published song lyrics quote both.

Also, is "big Mama" the same person as "Bessie"?

    Thanks.

    Actually, you mean The Weight.

According to sites I looked at, it should be Take a load off, Fanny. The article I read thinks Fanny was chosen because of the double entendre.

It seems that no one has actually asked Robbie Robertson about it or he just does not comment on it.

I never read song titles.  Serves me right for getting it wrong.  I'm glad you recognized the one I meant.

I always just figured that the words were slurred and some of the f sound dropped onto the name Annie.  My friend swears not.

I went to the article and got completely lost about half way through it.

I must not be hip enough.

Thanks for the reference though.  At least now I know I'm not the only one confused.
