What Is Butterbeer?

There are two types of butterbeer; one an alcoholic version made from real beer and one a non-alcoholic sweet version made from butterscotch flavouring and soda pop. The version being served to much fanfare at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and in homes throughout the world of course falls into the second category. This theme park version is also a non-dairy drink. People say that it tastes like a cross between cream soda and butterscotch.

The first reference to butterbeer in the Harry Potter series is The Three Broomsticks, a pub in Hogsmeade village, which is famous for its butterbeer. This pub is a popular spot for both the Hogwarts staff and the students although butterbeer is also available at the Hog's Head. In the books, the beverage is a warming drink that is safe for young wizards and witches intoxicating to house elves.
