Let it Rain!

It is a little weird that it is raining during the month of February here in Manila. Usually, Feb is the start of summer and it should be really hot and I must be sweaty as of this writing. Apparently, it is the opposite. I guess I have to blame it to global warming again. Hence, before I divert into a totally different topic, let me tell you that I hate it when it rains. When you wake up and you see the gloomy skies, no sun and all umbrellas on everyone’s hands—it saddens me so much. Furthermore, it’s hard to commute when it’s raining. You’ll soak yourself in cold rainwater plus you'll be working inside a Antarctic-cold office for eight hours—that sucks. (I feel like working inside the fridge)

What will I do when it rains? Usually, when it’s a “bed weather” day I just literally chill in my room, watch TV or just listen to some good old tunes. During these past few days, it is raining (and it’s stealing my summer). So after work, I just go home and listen to my phone as it plays my favorite “rain songs”. Yes, I have a rainy day mix that I play if I want to rest and just relax while the pouring rain water is making love with our roof. To share some of the songs that I have, here are some of that I would happily share to you.

Lovesong

Artist:The Cure/311/Adele

This song is originally done by The Cure back in 1989. 311 band recorded this in 2004 and was used in the Adam Sandler/Drew Barrymore movie called “50 First Date”. British singer Adele sang this track and is included in her “21” CD.

My fave line from the song : “However far away, I will always love you

However long I stay, I will always love you”

Why is it included in my rain mix?

The 311 version is my favorite. It is mellow and it has a little touch of reggae beat. The music itself relaxes my mind and I really think that it is perfect for such kind of weather. On the other hand, I would also like to commend Adele’s version. Hers is a little lounge-y and totally soulful and it is so fantastic

Sleep All Day

Artist: Jason Mraz

This track was recorded back in 2002 from the album “Waiting for my rocket to come”.

My fave line from the song: “If all is grounder you should, go make a mountain out of it”

Why is it included in my rain mix?

I am a big fan of this guy since I first heard his song “The Remedy”. Jason Mraz is my high school hero for being such a geek in the songs that he wrote and I can always sing my heart out into it. What I love about “Sleep all day” is the lyrics and how Jason sang it. The entire song adds good vibes to my bad rainy day mood.

Black Coffee

Artist: All Saints

One of their last singles as a group, the song “Black Coffee” zoomed to the top spot in UK charts back in the year 2000.

My fave line from the song: “Each moment is new, freeze the moment. Each moment is cool, freeze the moment”.

Why is it included in my rain mix?

Oh, the days! Yes, this song was released back in 2000 when I was still in grade school. I was hooked on watching MTV the whole day and whenever I hear this one, it reminds me of my good old childhood days. Reminiscing is fun and the rainy days are the opportune time for that. *each moment is new, freeze the moment*

One and Only

Artist: Adele

Grammy Award winning Adele said in an interview that this track is just a simple love song. Yes, a simple yet powerful one from her current album “21”.

My fave line from the song:”I know it ain’t easy giving up your heart”

Why is it included in my rain mix?

Adele is the star of the moment. She wrote her songs straight from her personal experiences and sang it from her heart. For me, Adele is packed with pure talent. No excess baggage. No gimmicks. Just pure unadulterated talent!

This song might be a simple love song for her but for me, it is something special. It is worth playing while the raindrops outside. It is simple. It is soulful. It is so personal. I guess, that is the factor that makes this song exceptional.

Two Princes

Artist: Spin Doctors

This song is part of Spin Doctor’s Pocketful of Kryptonite album which was released back in 1990. (Wow, I was just a snotty 2-year old kid that year).

My fave line from the song: ”I know how a prince and lover ought to be…And if you, want to call me baby, just go ahead now”

Why is it included in my rain mix?

I just love its old school rhythm. Classic hits from the 90s along with happy lazy days are totally awesome. Back then, I enjoyed listening to my favorite DJ named Jimmy Jam during my grade school day. Simply because he used to play old school alternative music from the late 80s and early 90s and I just love such era. This song is one of my staple phone-in requests during his program on RetroJam Sundays. Ahh, those were the days.

Before I forget, this song is also sang by Jake Gylenhaal in the film “Love and other drugs” in its opening scene.

Under The Bridge

Artist: Red Hot Chili Peppers

Out in 1992, this single is included in Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “Blood Sugar Sex Magik”. Anthony Keidis wrote this song during the times when he felt so distraught and totally alone.

My fave line from the song: “It’s hard to believe that there’s nobody out there. It’s hard to believe that I am alone. At least I have her love, the city, she loves me. Lonely as I am, together we cry”

Why is it included in my rain mix?

Red Hot Chili Peppers is one of the best bands in the world! Period. Should I say more? Well, with regards to their song. I love it. Period. Should I say more?

All the love in the world

Artist: The Corrs

This single is included in the album called “In Blue” back in the year 2000. It was used as one of the soundtracks of the movie “Americas Sweethearts” starring John Cusack, Julia Roberts and Catherin Zeta-Jones.

My fave line from the song: I’m only human. And nights grow colder with no one to love me that way. I need someone who really sees me”

Why is it included in my rain mix?

The Corrs is one of the best bands I know. These guys are musically inclined siblings who just want to share their music to the entire world and I love them for their sensible songs. Not to mention, Andrea Corr is smoking hot. So, what I like about this song and I include this in my top ten rain mix? There are so many reasons. I actually love to include the whole album. However, I only have to choose one. In the entire “In Blue” CD, this one makes the cut above the rest.

The Lazy Song

Artist: Bruno Mars

This is part of the successful Doo-Wops and Hooligans album that was released on 2011.

My fave line from the song: “I aint gonna comb my hair, coz I aint going anywhere”

Why is it included in my rain mix?

Oh, I just love Bruno Mars. The entire album is worth every cent. What is interesting about this single is its music video with insane dancing monkeys in the background. The song is very laid-back. This is just perfect for those people who came from work and do not want to think about anything about their jobs. It makes you happy and it tells you to just chill and relax because you don’t have to do anything.

Aqueous Transmission

Artist: Incubus

This seven-minute long track is part of the “Morning View” album which was released in 2001. (One of the best albums during my high school years)

Why is it included in my rain mix?

Listen to it so you may know why I include this to my rain mix. The sound of this song is slow compared to the usual Incubus hits. This song used Asian instrument called Pipa. In fact, when you hear this song, you’ll feel like you are in a spa. Not to mention, at the end of the song, you’ll hear frogs cloaking and those are real.

While My Guitar Gently Weeps

Artist: Santana featuring India Arie

This song is originally done by music legend “The Beatles”

Why is it included in my rain mix?

For me, the version of this song is more like a “sexy song”. The rhythm is sexy plus the soulful voice of India Arie—perfect combination.

Okay, these are just 10 of my favorite songs that I have included in my “Rainy Day”. If you will scan my file, you will definitely see hundred. Creating a collection of tunes for a certain phase of your life is fun so try to create yours. So, now, what’s your mix?
