Oscar Pistorius is in the news again. But this time it is not for winning medals.

The South African amputee sprinter (popularly known as Blade runner) is facing murder charges for the death of his model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp who died from gunshot wounds to the head and upper body in Pistorius’s home in a gated community in South Africa after it was claimed she tried to surprise him at his home for valentine.

Valentine gone wrong?

Local media claimed she was shot through a bathroom door. The question being asked is was his volatile nature the cause or was he just a victim of the high crime rate in south Africa.

The Other side of Oscar Pistorius

Reaching a conclusion as to what may have happened on the 14th of February 2013 may be a complete mystery. With this sad tragedy and the death of his girlfriend. News have been emerging with a lot of revelation on the personal life of Oscar Pistorius and still more to come I am sure.

A news paper headline called it - 'the dark side of a sporting hero'. Although many knew him as one who has overcome his difficulties from a tender age, some have called him a true gent. We have now learnt that this hero whose image is now being tarnished is also a short tempered womaniser. He has obviously had a complex love-life with a long list of girlfriends. So we expect to hear more of his other side as investigations go on.

There have also been incidents where he has been accused of threatening a former football player after a row he had over his teenage girlfriend and another for assaulting a 19-year-old girl when he threw her out of a party at his house (although he was not prosecuted).

High Crime rate in South Africa

South Africa is known to have a very high rate of murder, rapes, assault compared to most countries. In fact, a survey for the period 1998–2000 compiled by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime ranked South Africa second for assault and murder per capita and first for rapes per capita in a data set of 60 countries including the United States. It is estimated that around 50 people are murdered in South Africa everyday.

Unfortunately, the South African government has been criticised for doing little or nothing to stop these crimes and the people are left with no choice but to take different measures to protect themselves.

Under South African law, it is permitted for one to use firearms when a life is threatened. The government passed laws granting the right to kill to defend property. This may well explain why Oscar Pistorius sleeps with a revolver by his bedside and other weapons around the house. As he like many South Africans are forced to live and sleep with one eye open.

This killing has definitely raised the talks about the level of crime in the country. This is not the first of the case as a former Springbok rugby player (South African) was also charged with murder in 2004 after he mistook his daughter for a car thief and shot her dead in the family's driveway.

A victim or an opportunist?

For now, there are no known motives or reason for why Oscar Pistorius would want to kill his girlfriend. According to her last tweet - #getexcited #ValentinesDay - it is safe to say that girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp was looking forward to the special day with her boyfriend.

Neighbours have claimed they heard noises at about 3am and called the police - was this an argument between the two lovers or was it the scream of pain after being shot that was heard? Were these noises heard regularly to suggest that the couple argued a few times?

Did Oscar act in self defense in response to being burgled which is a common issue in South Africa or did he pick the perfect opportunity to carry out a horrible crime on his girlfriend under the guise of self defence?

We may never know. But as investigations go on, more will be revealed.

What do you think? Victim or Opportunist?

I have been following the case quite closely as I always had a lot of respect for Pistorius. I was a bit disappointed in his behaviour after he lost the 400m in the Olympics, but as he has already mentioned the problem about the longer legs before, it might make sense that he was frustrated.

His recall of what happened that night sounded a bit like a story full of holes. That is maybe exactly why it is true. If you plan a murder won't you have a better story?

The police investigation seemed to be a bit haphazard, not uncommon in SA. Botha didn't even know what the substance was that was found in his house. It turned out to be a harmless herbal remedy. He also had to admit that the witness who heard the screaming was actually living about 600m away and she couldn't confirm that the shouting came from Pistorius' house. She also claimed she heard 8 gun shots. Not much of a witness.

For me one of the strongest pieces of evidence is the fact that her bladder was empty. I don't think your first instinct when you are scared that somebody is going to hurt you is to use the toilet. It seems that she actually went to toilet to use it and not that she was hiding there as the media try to suggest.

Regardless, it is still a very very sad thing that happened.
