Ponyo Movie Review-How did it get an A- from the critics?!

Updated on August 28, 2009

The Worst Movie I Saw This Summer

Just so you know, I am a huge fan of Hayau Miazaki. I have watched Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, Kiki's Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke, Castle in the Sky, and My Neighbor Totoro. I loved them all and have watched many of them multiple times. I became very excited when I learned Hayau was making another movie: Ponyo. I saw the movie about a week ago, and it was a huge disappointment. Spirited Away started out a little slow and then got much better as the movie progressed. I wish I could say the same about Ponyo. The movie was boring the whole way through. Instead of waiting for it to get better, I found myself waiting for it to end. The animation, though still very good, was not up to par with Hayau's other movies. I expected Ponyo to take me to another world, full of interesting creatures and other unimaginable things. Unfortunately, I was constantly aware of my being seated in a movie theatre, and I wasn't taken anywhere.

Yahoo Was Wrong!

What made me really mad wasn't so much the movie itself but more the faith I put into the reviews on yahoo.com. I like Yahoo because it gives you reviews not only from the critics but also from Yahoo users. The average rating from the critics on Yahoo is probably a B. Therefore, I was overcome by excitement when I saw that Ponyo had received an A- from critics! Just to make sure, though, I checked to see what Yahoo users had to say. Like the critics, Yahoo users gave the movie an average grade of A-. At that point, I was very happy, and I knew that Hayau had done it again. At least, that's what I thought at the time. Unfortunately, I don't trust Yahoo reviews anymore, and I will always check with other sites before seeing a movie. I wouldn't want to waste another 2 hours of my life on something that boring.
