Working at Rock The Lakes and Enjoying Every Minute Of It!

Updated on June 20, 2015

I may be a post toasty, but I would happily do it again and again!

Post toasty - the sun block did not help.

Have you ever had someone say to you "they are looking for volunteers? " Well this happened just last week when I was on vacation. So of course he was a good friend so I asked what was needed? The answer is that they need ushers for the Rock The Lakes outreach. You need to come on Wednesday for an orientation and then be there on Saturday and or Sunday. The hours would be from 1:30 PM til 8 ish or later depending on what role you would be filling in for. So being on vacation a free two day concert sounded "Great".

Wednesday was easy It was just a run down of what we would be doing. They asked the people that would be the coaches to stay for a few more moments for some additional information. I should have seen this as an omen as I stayed with a question. After everyone dispersed I walked around the stadium to get a better idea what it was like and get a better idea of where things were located. I was waiting for my ride as was another lady. Her and I were able to talk and pray for our team of fellow ushers and the upcoming events.

Saturday was quickly upon us. We piled into the car a drove to the stadium parking section. Look there is a line already of people that want to see the concert and the doors don't open till much later for the concert goers. We are able to get in as we are the volunteers. He goes his way and I go mine. I get my free shirt that shows that I am a volunteer. Going over I get in line with the others to find out what section I will be covering. Suddenly they need more coaches. People step forward. Wait we need three more. People step forward. They point at me and say we need one more. I say I wouldn't mind but would prefer to be on the ground / field. Turns out that the last position they needed was for section three which was on the field. Hmm like I said earlier I was part of the coaches that stayed even though it was for a question. I had three people that I was responsible for. We basically covered the area and made sure that the folks in the audience were OK. It was turning out to be a rather worm day. This was only two o'clock. I checked with my people on a regular basis to make sure that one they were OK and tow to make sure that the people that were filling up our area were also OK. At four the music started. If you look further down you will see the artist that were preforming on Saturday.

Sunday was fathers day. At church they were giving each father a Happy Father's Day bar of chocolate with Proverbs 10:9 on the label.

Proverbs 10:9 The man of integrity walks securely.

As a side note I waited until I worked on this lens before eating this chocolate.

After church I got changed and off to the stadium we went. I once again was on the field and responsible for two others this time. Again it was a scorcher so each of us would check to make sure that we each had water. Again the people flooded the field. And again we moved around our area to make sure that every one was OK. Even though this day was warmer that the first there was a constant breeze to help. Unlike the day before we actually had a couple of people that needed some help. These both were mostly just sitting in the shade and getting them some water. Afterwords we checked back on them they were fine.

Even though the music was great on both days there was something even more important going on. And that was when Franklin Graham would take the stage. For what he would do was more wonderful than the music. He would speak of Jesus and what it meant to follow Him. It was amazing to see the people both young and old come forward and dedicate their lives to Jesus.

At the end of both days we would do clean up in our areas. The idea being was to leave the stadium in better condition then when we got there.

At the end of the second day I went over to the volunteers supply trailer for a bottle of water and walked away with a box of snacks and water as they were cleaning out before removing the truck from the site. Wow the blessings never seamed to end during this weekend event.

As a final note though out both days the music was played and the artists would sing. The one thing that perplexed us was the clothes that the performers were waring. They were in long sleeve shirts and some had jackets.

Testimony of a Fellow Volunteer.

I was ask to be a part of Rock the Lakes on June16th and 17th, 2012, by one of the ladies from our Church, and also to be a volunteer for the office part of the Event. I had a good friend from my church join me. We had lots of fun and got to know each other a little more. He was a last minute volunteer, which he didn't mind whatsoever. The message from Franklin Graham was awesome and many came forward to make decisions for the LORD. The music was absolutely Rocking the stadium , and the neighborhoods. I can't wait till the next two events, even though they will be in towns that I will not be at. I would ask that you be sure to pray for the next two up coming events in both Buffalo NY and Green Bay WI.

Who were the performers?

Listed below you will see the different performers broken down by the two days.

Each one will have some of my thoughts and a video that was linked in from the internet. This way you can compare my thoughts with the music and make your own decisions.

With that being said read, listen and most of all Enjoy.

Student Night

Here is a list of the fiver artists that were performing on the first night.

Trip Lee - Invasion

It was amazing that I heard rappers. I started to tune them out. Boy was I surprised. The music did not over power the voices. I heard and understood them. Wow they even made sense. To be blunt I will actually look into their music and my add some to my collection.

The Almost - Hands

This group was part of the crew reaching out to the youth. With that being said they were loud. Yet I was able to understand the words when I had time to listen. You could hear that there was praise worked into their songs.

Flame - Move

Sorry I don't have any comments on this one I was pulled in another direction during their time on stage.

Lacey Sturm - Testamentary

Its amazing how people are willing to share what they have gone through. All I can say is, please listen.

NewsBoys - Born Again

As stated it was very warm that day. And these guys were dressed in jackets. They were moving. And I don't mean from side to side. It mad me wonder if they practiced in a sauna to get ready. It was also amazing to see the people move from the stands to the field to get closer to the performers.

Sunday June 17, 2012

Here are the artists that were performing on the second night.

Canton Jones - Stay Saved

Its amazing how you can hear people in concert and then to see the videos it draws your attention in another direction. This can be said in the case. Live they were not keeping my attention. This may have been due to the fact I was always on the move. But being able to give my full attention to the video once again changes my mind about what I am thinking about this artist. To quote a newer phrase, Time to Google this one.

L'Angelus - Ca C'est Bon

This was a family group. They worked phenomenal together. It was as if God said to the parents OK here comes the family music group. This is another group that I am looking into getting some music from.

L'Angelus on Amazon

NewsBoys - God's Not Dead

But wait there's more. The day was just as warm and the group was still in jackets. How did they do it? I don't think it matters as they were there to share the word of God and did so very well.

Lacey Sturm

From Flyleaf

The second day she also shared her testimony and music live with the crowd. Sorry there is no link here. The testimony bears repeating.

Michael W. Smith - Healing Rain

Michael W. Smith was the final artist for Rock the Lakes Rochester. There were two songs that I was hoping that he would do. The first was friends and the second was Healing rain. He did both, Yes! One almost right after the other. To be honest Friends was the only song over the two days that I actually stopped and listened to fully. Every other song by every other performer I was on the move. I know that I have said it before but its amazing how God knows your wants and needs. In this case it was a want.

Side note on the video: I have Googled this many times to watch.

One final suggestion

Trust me if I could, I would follow through on this one.

If you are looking for a great family outing this summer I would strongly recommend attending one of these events. From my experiences at the Rochester event it was more than worth my time and the sunburn. Even though I was not able to pay full attention to the music I was able to give my full attention to the people around me. It was really nice to see families being able to share time together. This may not be your typical vacation spot but it's a great weekend get a way.
