Asa Harmon McCoy was the first casualty of the Hatfield McCoy Feud. Most present day historians agree that the Civil War marked the beginning of the hostilities that led to the feud. The above statement from the WV State Archives relies on outdated books & information.

Robert Baker 23 months ago

Agreed Mr. Autry. I have (or had) Harmon's widow's pension records and a copy of a letter from an examining surgeon dated to sometime around April of '63 indicating that Harmon was captured (likely during the VSL sweep up the valley after Wireman's in early December, '62) while he was recuperating at home from a gunshot wound received during a fight during February or March of '62. The dude was rousted out of his bed with a wound that was almost obviously mortal and marched with probably 120 or more Unionists to the railhead at Saltville before being sent on to one of the larger camps in and around Richmond (which prison escapes my memory at this moment). The surgeon described the wound a year after it was inflicted as suppurating. This dude's grit and toughness, not to mention his determination, surely frightened the local Confederates enough to hope that he would die long before returning to East Kentucky to rejoin the 45th Kentucky. Harmon was actually one of perhaps dozens of Tug Valley Unionists who did their best to play hell with the West Virginia rebels early in the war. A progressive (albeit likely unplanned) campaign against each of the more ardent in turn (Billy Phillips, the Kings, the Colemans, Bill Francis, the Hurleys, and others) eventually tipped the balance irretrievably against the Unionists. Many chose to flee and set up homestead where the greatest threat was marauding Indians rather than their Confederate neighbors. Some abandoned huge land holdings to ensure the safety of their families.

Thank you Robert! I'm honored to make your aquaintance. I've read everything I can find online written by Brian Hall & yourself. I'm the 2x great grand daughter of Asa Harmon & great grand daughter of Lark & Mary Eliz. Coleman McCoy. I grew up listening to Dad's stories about the feud. He remembers seeing Harmon's Union uniform coat hanging in the corner of his grandfather's bedroom.
