A New Mom's Review: Playtex Diaper Genie II Elite - How Does It Work?
Playtex Diaper Genie II Elite
Got baby, got diaper pail stink? Not anymore!
The Playtex® Diaper Genie® II Elite Disposal System is a godsend for this new mom. Before having my baby, my perception was that there was no way to prevent the telltale baby-in-the-house stink of a dirty diaper pail. Now I know better!
In my quest to find a system to keep the stench of dirty diapers from infiltrating my house, I consulted with what I consider to be the baby products bible: Baby Bargains, by Denise and Alan Fields. Baby Bargains is a fantastic guide to all things baby, and includes reviews of products, ratings of baby product manufacturers by product, and ways to save on everything that one might need for a baby. The Playtex® Diaper Genie® II Elite Disposal System was among the highest rated products in the diaper disposal category of Baby Bargains. The one major drawback listed the Diaper Genie® is the need to buy specialized bag refills, which aren't cheap. However, if, like me, your greatest interest in a diaper disposal system is odor control, the cost of the refills is well worth it!
A fantastic guide to baby products, covering everything from diapers pails to cribs to high chairs and more. (Paperback. Kindle version also available.)
How Does the Diaper Genie II Elite Work?
How does the Playtex® Diaper Genie® II Elite work, you ask? It's really a pretty simple, albeit ingenious, design. The unit is composed of two chambers, both molded from antimicrobial plastic to help inhibit the growth of odor-causing bacteria. The top chamber has a convenient flip top, a spot for the Playtex® Diaper Genie® II Elite refill container to drop in, and a sort of clam-like contraption. The bottom chamber is the actual containment area for the dirty diapers that have been disposed, and features a foot-pedal, which is what opens the flip top on the top chamber.
After a diaper change, wrap the dirty diaper up tightly, using the tape tabs to secure the diaper into a little bundle that you can handle without getting your hands dirty. The more compact this little "poop burrito" is wrapped, the more dirty diapers will fit into your Playtex® Diaper Genie® II Elite between bag changes, costing you less money on refills.
Next, step on the pedal on the bottom of the Playtex® Diaper Genie® II Elite. The flip top on the top of the unit will open. Drop the dirty diaper down through the center of the refill, into the plastic bag, and onto the clam-like trap. Now, just release the pedal to close the flip top cover. When you do this, the clam-like trap will automatically release the diaper that you threw away down into the bottom chamber of the Playtex® Diaper Genie® II Elite. No muss, no fuss, no stink! Plus, the diapers never touch the pail itself, only the refill film, which means little to no clean up is required of the Playtex® Diaper Genie® II Elite diaper disposal system.
The clam-like trap is the genious part of the Playtex® Diaper Genie® II Elite diaper disposal system. When you step on the pedal to open the cover of the system, the trap closes creating a landing spot for the diaper you are tossing as well as sealing off the bottom chamber of the unit where all of the previously disposed diapers are housed, thus sealing off the stink. When you release the pedal, the trap opens, dropping the newest dirty diaper down to join its stinky kin, at the same time that the flip top cover closes, thus keeping all stink inside the unit.

How does the Playtex Diaper Genie II Elite Refill work?
The refill system for the Playtex® Diaper Genie® II Elite disposal system was created to ensure that you never have to handle a dirty diaper once you have disposed of it.
The Playtex® Diaper Genie® II Elite refill container looks like a big ring. Once the plastic seal is removed from the top of the refill container, find the edge of the plastic bag inside, pull it up, feed it back through the center of the ring, and tie a knot near the end. Then, pull the continuous plastic bag down long enough so that it will reach the bottom of the lower chamber when the refill cartridge is seated in place in the top chamber. Next, step on the foot pedal on the bottom of the unit, drop the refill cartridge into place, making sure that the knotted bag slips down through the clam-like trap and enters the bottom chamber. Now you're ready to toss dirty diapers!
When the Playtex® Diaper Genie® II Elite diaper disposal system is full, it will need to be emptied. To do this, press the button near the middle of the unit to allow the top and bottom chambers to separate. Fold back the top chamber and allow it to rest with the flip top cover on the floor. On the inside of the hinge between the top and bottom chambers, there is a convenient cutter. Simply slide the plastic bag through the cutter to cut it off, making sure to leave enough room above the dirty diapers to tie off the plastic bag. Once the knot is tied in the plastic bag housing the dirty diapers, You can lift what looks like a big sausage made of dirty diapers out of the Playtex® Diaper Genie® II Elite and put it in your outdoor garbage can to await for garbage pickup day. Now, just tie a new knot in the freshly cut plastic bag, stretch the bag down to reach the bottom of the lower chamber of the Playtex® Diaper Genie® II Elite diaper disposal system, and close the system back up.
One Playtex® Diaper Genie® II Elite diaper disposal system should seal approximately 270 Newborn-size diapers, 233 size 1 diapers, 192 size 2 diapers, 176 size 3 diapers, 144 size 4 diapers or 105 size 5 diapers.
