Baby Registries

When you're expecting your first child, one of the most fun and sometimes difficult things to do is create and manage a baby shower gift registry. Besides trying to figure out what to put on the registry list, you first need to decide: where will I register?

One of the best known baby gift registries is through Babies R' Us, part of the R' Us chain of stores. Most pregnant mothers and expectant fathers turn to Babies R' Us to pick out all of the essentials for their new babies because of the convenience of the one-stop-baby-shop.

Here is my review of the Babies R' Us registry from start to finish.

Where to Register for a Baby Shower

One of the first things an expectant couple must decide when planning a baby shower is where to register for the baby shower gifts. A popular place to register is Babies R' Us.

Babies R' Us has several nice features about its baby registry:

  • Easy to walk in and register in any store, or even online
  • One-stop-shop for all things baby and pregnancy
  • Varied selection of high quality baby items, including baby gear, clothing, feeding supplies, etc.
  • Easy to follow registry checklist
  • Free gift bag upon opening of registry
  • Free personalized registry cards available in-store or online to print
  • Often, free $10 gift card upon opening of registry
  • Guests can easily find a store within driving distance, or have items shipped to them
  • Guests can buy in-store or online
  • VIB card (Very Important Baby), good for diapers, wipes, and formula
  • Gift cards available for purchase through registry

Have a Babies R' Us rewards card? Attach it to your baby registry! Any purchase made by your guest can be added to your rewards account as if you bought the item yourself. You can then use the rewards coupons or promotions later on for diapers or other baby essentials.

Babies R Us Gift Registry

Adding items to the baby shower registry can be a breeze. You have the ability to add items using a scanning gun in-store, using the website registry features, or the mobile registry app.

Probably the easiest way to add items to the registry is by going to the store itself. That way you can compare items and prices side-by-side. You may also see things you like but may never have found on the website just by walking around the store. In addition to that, you have the assistance of any sales associate on the floor who can help you pick out items or help you adjust the list.

One setback to choosing the items in-store is you may be limited to that particular store's inventory and stock of color choices or character choices, such as in the car seats and strollers. If you have other choices in mind, you may find more available on the website.

Creating a registry on the Babies R' Us website is quite easy too, but you have to be mindful of one thing: whether or not the item is available in-store or only online. The website offers many items exclusively through the website, often at a sale price. Many guests would rather buy physical items in a store than wonder if the item will be shipped on time.

One convenient thing about using the online feature as a guest is that you have the option to pay for the item using your debit card, credit card, or even PayPal.

Using the Babies R' Us mobile registry app isn't too difficult to use, but that can depend on your smartphone or tablet and your service. You are able to manage your account and add more things to your list, but it may be difficult to view the items and information depending on what device your using. The service you have for your device might make the pages load slower or not load at all.

On the bright side, the mobile app does have nearly everything you'd see on the website, plus some guides and videos to help you make your selections.

Updating a Baby Registry

If you needed to add, delete or change your selections from your baby registry, you can easily do so in-store, online, or with the mobile app. Any changes you make, however, may take a few hours or a day or so to update on your registry list.

You can also update the registry based on gifts your guests bought. For instance, if you know Aunt Meredith purchased your baby bedding before the shower but didn't tell the store she was buying it from a registry, you could go on the website or go to the store and update the registry yourself. Again, it might take some time before the registry is current.

Note: I recommend not making any changes to the registry for at least five days before your shower. That way the list is current and your guests don't have any issues with the gifts.

Babies R' Us Registry Completion

When your shower is over, you may notice that some of your registry items were not purchased. Babies R' Us will send you a certificate or coupon for 10% any remaining items in your registry.

When purchasing the remaining items in your registry, it would also be a good time to make any returns of items that were on your list. You can make returns with the receipt or by using your registry list.

Babies R' Us Registry

Having used this baby registry process twice in the past five years, I can tell you that it is worth it to register at Babies R' Us. Their products are great, the selection is vast, and the prices are manageable for all sorts of incomes. Plus, with the great sales and promotions going on all year long, you can score some awesome deals on all the baby supplies you'll ever need in a one-stop-shop.

Have fun creating your registry!

I love the fact that this registry system makes it so much easier to have a shower. It just makes perfect sense, and these pointers and tips help us use it to our full advantage.

Very interesting hearing the good and bad about BRU -- I hear both. As a registry shopper I've had good experiences so far.

Joy, I am so sorry you had such a bad experience with Babies R' Us! Thank you for sharing your story.

Have had the worst experience with babies r us! Set our registry up two weeks ago, and the party is meant to be on this Saturday; my mother and the rest of our family were pretty excited as this is her fourth baby, yet this was her first ever baby shower. Today, we received a call from one of our guests telling us that we were not registered with them; which was impossible, because we scanned everything we wanted, and we even got a registry number. We raised this up with their head office and still waiting for a solution. We are never going to get registered with babies r us ever again!!

D.White, I am sorry to hear that you too had issues with BRU's registry process. Thank you for your honest assessment!

I agree with John. I am pregnant with my third baby and have had issues with BRU this go around. Items are not being removed from my list AND I received multiples even thought it would say it was already purchased. For example, I registered for 1 highchair but clearly states they sold 2. Why would it allow someone to but one if one was already purchased? I would have loved to register somewhere else but buy buy baby is an hour away from me also. I tried to use multiple coupons at BRU for some of the remainder of the items on my registry and none of them were able to be used even though they sent them to me and said they could be used for the remainder of my registry. They would only give me store credit for the lowest price the item has been sold for in the past 45 days. Very disappointed with their services.

John, I'm sorry you had such a negative experience with Babies R Us! I have heard people say that items were not taken off of their registries, but often they find out later that the baby shower guests didn't give the cashiers the registry list when checking out. The good thing about receiving doubles from BRU is that they will take the second item back within 90 days of purchase, and they even will give merchandise credit back for the items returned without a receipt.

Thanks for sharing your experience!

DO NOT use the Baby's R Us registry if you can avoid it. First, BRU is more expensive than any other baby store. Second, items are not accurately taken off your registry, which means you get many of the same gift. Finally, the rewards are worthless. After thousands of dollars being spent on our registry, we received a total of $10 dollars from BRU.

teaches12345, I too have been hearing a lot about Buy Buy Baby, but the closest one to here is about an hour away. They do have an online registry, though, so for anyone who is a distance away can still use it.

Thanks for reading, commenting, and keeping on file! :)

I currently know no one having a baby, but this advice will be kept on file for when I do. I hear Buy Buy Baby is pretty popular with moms right now. Great job on providing this information for those in need.
