Megabloks are the perfect building blocks for 18 month olds. They are easy to grasp and put together which means little ones can have fun building huge towers and then knocking them down. My son is now 2 1/2. He's had these blocks since he was one, got really interested in them at about 18 months and he still loves building really tall towers with the megabloks. They also keep him entertained for a while which means I have a few minutes to myself.

We have a similar one which we now use as a slide for the paddling pool and my son loves using it to splash into the water. You can also take it to places where you need some entertainment for your child.

Car Toys for 18 Month Old

Fisher-Price Little People City Skyway
Fisher-Price Little People City Skyway

My son loved cars from around his 1st birthday. He used to just sit and move them around. Then he used to lie and move them back and forth until he went to sleep.

If you have a car crazy 18 month old, they will love the new little people skyway which has lots of ramps for your cars to speed down. It stands over 3 feet tall so is really spectacular for little ones to look at and play with.

There's one point of entry on top with three exits on the bottom, one of which is a jump. Flip different switches to make cars change paths. It think children up to 3 or even 4 years will enjoy playing with this so hopefully it's a toy that will last a long time.

Ride On Toys for 18 Month Old

Ride on toys are great for an 18 month old. They will love pushing, pulling and riding on the toy.

Ride on toys which have compartments are good as children will love putting stuff in and carting it around and then taking it all out again!.

My son has really enjoyed playing with the Little Tikes Push and Ride racer (featured opposite) at one of the playgroups we go to. I think its particularly good as it's quite low so easy for him to get on and off and also really easy for him to push himself along on. It's one of those toys that he doesn't want to give up! And the reviews with this ride on are excellent.

Update: it's been a while since I first wrote this article and the Little Tikes Push and Ride Racer remained a favorite with my own boy until he was over 3!

Another thing to look for with ride on toys is that they are sturdy and easy to clean.

Play tents make great toys for children of 18 months andyounger and older children love this them too. My son and my neice love sitting in their play tent at Grandma's house. They hide in it, crawl through the tunnel, eat their lunch in it and read books in it. They like playing peepo with adults too! It's great for them to have their own little hideaway and space to play in. It can be used inside and outside as well.

Fridge Magnets / Magnetic Letters

Fridge magnets were a real favorite of my son's at 18 months and a lifesaver for me. He used to play for ages with the fridge magnets, putting them on and taking them off the fridge. They worked on the washing machine too. This used to give me some time to get things done in the kitchen while still keeping an eye on him.

Check out the leapfrog magnets below. If you want to learn more check out my article on magnets for young children.

The Remo Kids Percussion Drum, featured first, is a great little drum that toddlers will love. It's shaped like a brightly colored lollipop which is easy for little hands to hold. It also comes with a brightly colored mallet to use. The sound is deep so isn't too annoying. It will keep an 18 month old occupied for quite a while and is good for hand and eye co-ordination too.

Dump Truck

18 months is a good age to get a toddler a dump truck. They will love putting things in the back and carting them around. It's a great toy that will last. Older toddlers and preschoolers love pushing around dump trucks too. They make great toys to play with inside or outside. Fill up the truck with sand or mud and push it around the garden or find things around the house to put in the back.

The Fisher Price Little People range is very popular with this age group. My son got the little bus around 18 months and he loves it. He pushes it around and takes the people in and out. It plays music and beeps too. The little people are the right size for little hands to grasp. He still plays with it now. It's especially great if your child is interested in vehicles and buses. The toy is very sturdy and durable.

Little Tikes Cozy Coupe

This is a highly recommended buy for an 18 month old. They have these cars at a toddler group I go to and they are always occupied by the children. My son absolutely loves sitting in it and "driving". It keeps him entertained for ages. They can be used inside if you have the space but are a great outdoor toy too. It is also a well made toy, sturdy and durable. This is particularly good as your child will probably be using it until he/she is at least 3 (probably older).

Wooden Peg Puzzles

18 months is a great age to get a first set of wooden peg puzzles. At this age, they will need help to do them but it's a toy that will last and they will be doing them on their own before you know it. It's great for hand and eye co-ordination and for developing fine motor skills. This particular set will also help them learn number and letters.

Step 2 Rollercoaster

Step 2 Up & Down Roller Coaster

The Step 2 rollercoaster is an extremely fun toy that children will use for years after purchase.

The track is 10 feet long and can be used indoors or outdoors. There's a downhill run at the start and a smaller hill about halfway along. At 18 months you will probably need to hold onto your toddler when they're on it but as they get older they will be able to ride it for themselves. Check out the reviews on amazon.com. They are really good. The toy will last right into the preschool years.

Outdoor Toys for 18 Month Old Toddlers

I have already mentioned quite a few outdoor toys for 18 month olds but here are a few more:

Other ideas include:

Balls - toddlers of this age love balls. My son used to have about 8! And he always wanted to carry one whenever we went out. They are good for rolling, kicking, throwing, chasing and trying to catch!

Mini trampoline - You can get nursery trampolines for young toddlers to jump on. They have a handlebar and can be used indoors or outdoors.

Outdoor games - there are lots of outdoor games you can get for this age. The Little Tikes Tot sports tball set is recommended for ages 18 months to 4 years. It inclues an easy to use oversize bat, 2 oversize baseballs and a tee. Great for learning batting skills and improving hand and eye co-ordination.

Water Table

Water table - water tables are great for this age. My own son used to spend ages pouring water out of containers and then filling them up again. They are particularly good for hotter days as you can imagine. You can also get water and sand tables. These have water in one half of the table and sand in the other (bringing the beach to you). Or another idea is a sand pit.

Step 2 Climber

Step2 All-Star Sports Climber

18 month olds love to climb and play and you an get climbers with slides and other activities. I love the Step 2 climber opposite. It features a slide, climbing wall, basketball hoop, soccer ball and junior sized football. It can be used indoors and outdoors.
