Hooded Towels for Infants/Children
Description of Hooded Towels
An appropriate hooded towel makes a wonderful gift for a newborn through toddler age and can be used for several years. Most people think of a hooded towel as a gift for newborns, however, hooded towels are great gifts for toddlers as well. Most children enjoy their hooded towels until they are 5 to 7 years of age. Therefore, considerations in purchasing a hooded towel include the actual usefulness (as opposed to the cuteness factor) of the hooded towel and the period of time you expect it to be used. In the following paragraphs these considerations will be further discussed.
Hooded Towels are made from several different materials and sizing varies significantly. The most common material used is 100% cotton terry, followed by cotton/polyester blends and micro-fiber. The 100% cotton terry has loop terry on both sides of the material. The loop terry is the part of the towel that is the most absorbent. This material comes in weights ranging from 8 oz. to 14 oz. per square yard. The 12 oz. or 14 oz. 100% cotton terry is the best choice for a hooded towel that is being purchased for daily use. This weight of terry provides substantial absorption qualities. The cotton/polyester blends and micro-fiber are very light and generally have a soft feel, but they do not possess the moisture absorption qualities of 12 oz. or 14 oz. 100% cotton terry.

The single most over-looked factor when selecting a hooded towel is the sizing. In an effort to reduce costs, many manufacturers have reduced the size of the hooded towel to as small as 30" X 24". While this size may be usable for newborns, the infant will soon outgrow this size hooded towel. We suggest the smallest size to consider is 36" X 30". If you expect the hooded towel to be used through the toddler years, and perhaps beyond, consider a 45" X 36" size.
Why is there significant variances in the pricing of hooded towels? We have discussed materials and sizing in the above paragraphs. 100% cotton terry material in the 12 oz. and 14 oz. weights are the choice of most users, however, this material is the most expensive of most available choices. The size of the hooded towel is a major factor in the cost. The larger hooded towels have almost twice the coverage as compared with the smallest. Some manufacturers add colorful appiques to the hood area of the hooded towel, which also adds to the cost.
