How Grandma Stole Their Hearts

Having Fun With the Grandchildren

It has been less than a month since Christmas and by now most of the new toys have lost their appeal and have found their way to the toy box or closets where they may or may not ever be played with again. This is not to say they haven't enjoyed playing with them, it seems most have more toys that can ever have the time to enjoy. My grandsons really enjoy the movie Toy Story with good old Woody and his cronies and now there are even more versions to captivate and occupy the time of our youngsters.

We only have two grandsons and one afternoon this week they discovered the joys of creating their own fun. Of course it was from the help of grandma who is forever coming up with new and exciting things for them to do. I had been downstairs for a while and heard the footsteps overhead and the laughter of little boys. I had to go investigate because as all you grandma's and paw paw's will readily attest, nothing is more heartwarming than the giggles of little people.

The source of the commotion turned out to be a footstool in our living room had been so imaginatively transformed into a catapult. Using the elastic band from some unknown (I was afraid to ask) garment, the band had been drawn between the two outer legs of the foot stool. and placed on an old steamer trunk. A piece of masking tape had been placed in the center and ping pong balls were being hurled at a DVD cover which had been set on the piano stool as a target.

I had to get involved giving my own play by play of all that they were doing. Soon the aim of the boys got better and the cover was knocked over. The ping pong balls weren't heavy enough to cause any damage to our furniture and the new toy reigned supreme. I expect that new toy will again e put to use on their next visit.

I can't help but remember the things my mom showed us when we were little. One is using a string to make a Jacob's ladder. Another was making a toy from a string and one of mama's old buttons. these little inventions sometimes got me into trouble when I would get the button humming along and mischievously stick it in one of my siblings hair. The hair would be instantly tangled and the screams of the offended brought on the wrath of mama.

I have found kids enjoy almost anything that allows them to laugh and have fun. It is not always the high tech toys or games, sometimes it only requires imagination and sometimes a rubber band or a piece of string.

I never actually got to see my grandmother when I was a child. I saw her very briefly once a year and then she died when I was 16.

Thank you Sunnie, you always bring a smile to me.

Phoebe Pike, thank you for stopping by my hub and your comment is appreciated. I was very fortunate to have known both my grandmothers and one great grandmother. Having their influence on my life is priceless and my life so enriched by knowing them.

My grandmother on my father's side died when he was just a baby, and he was raised by his grandmother, but she died before I was born.

This certainly brought back memories. The things we could do with a piece of string... cats cradle, Jacob's ladder, Eiffel Tower, dog on a leash. I remember the button game too. Skipping games with elastic too. Kept us amused for hours. Lol

I think people are too focused on giveing their kids the best nowadays, but is it really the best?

Great fun hub
