Humanity: How to Help a Child

Big Brother and Big Sisters of America

One way you can really impact your community by helping a child is to become involved in the Big Brother Big Sisters of America. There are so many children that need someone to care about them. They need a relationship with someone they can count on and someone that can guide them There are many ways to help through this great organization.

How to Volunteer

First, you can volunteer to be a big brother or a big sister is you have time to make this commitment. I have known people involved in this mentoring program, and they have revealed they think they gained as much from their relationship with their little brother or sister as did the child. It is truly a fulfilling youth program. Whether you play sports together, a game of checkers or take them out to eat pizza, you are making an impact on that child. There are 21,000 boys waiting for a big brother at this time. They need men and women, as well as, people that speak Spanish.

If you can donate a few hours a couple of times a month, the impact for that child is significant. Anyone can volunteer. You will be interviewed, asked to provide references and go through a background check for obvious reasons. If you are unable to be a big brother or sister, you can also donate money as they are a non-profit corporation. They have a newsletter that tells of the children and the impact of the program. They also have a Facebook and Twitter page.

Big Brother Real Life Story

The main website tells some of the real life stories. The children are primarily from one parent homes or sometimes from orphanages. In one of the stories, the mother was concerned about her son, Jon, as he had no male role model. The man, Jesse, who answered this call, is an intelligence officer in the U.S. Air Force and now Jon has been to his first major league baseball game. Jesse had moved across the country away from his family and chose this way to connect with his community. He feels the relationship has allowed for good, open communication and it is rewarding for them both.

Big Sister Real Life Story

In another story a young 23 year old new mother states the ten years in her life where she had a big sister gave her confidence and she made better decisions due to that relationship. She is in dental hygienist school, happily married and has and 18 month old son. This young lady grew up in public housing without a parent, so her Big Sister made a huge impact on her life. When you consider spending a few hours a month for a child with such huge voids in their life, I can not imagine finding any better use of your time.

Big Brothers Big Sisters - Start Something

In Conclusion

Children are so precious and you can not always undo psychological damage that happens to so many when they are so young, despite good counseling. There is no greater calling than to help children. Having the privilege of impacting the direction of a young person’s life is certainly an honor.

Great hub about Big brothers & Big Sisters of America. We need all the help available to change a child's life and the world 'per se.' You have linked your work with the site, and that will make a sound difference for future Brothers and sisters! Remarkable job!

P.S. Hope your mom is doing better!

Pamela,

I knew you would contribute a meaningful and most necessary piece to the ever growing H.O.W. initiative.

This is one of the most valuable programs we have as a country. I agree there is no greater satisfaction than giving time and life experiences to our youngsters.

Voted UP and UABI, with a double of Beautiful. Hugs, Maria

Hi Pam. Wonderful message here. It doesn't take much to change the course of a child's life, just our time. Big Brother and Big Sister are wonderful programs. I will share and post as many places as I can to help spread your message.

I know whereof you write, Pamela, because I was a Big Sister for a number of years before my work required traveling. It is a wonderful organization and I enjoyed every moment I spent with my 'little sisters.'

What a beautiful hub, Pamela. I recently saw a program promoting this. My 'mentoring' at this time of my life is my own nephew. But, it is food for thought in the future. :) Thanks-am sharing.

Pamela....BSBB organization is close to my heart. Many years ago, while still raising a family, I volunteerd as a Big Sister with a private institution which housed young women who had been mandated to the program, either via the courts or through Child Welfare. The reasons were numerous. Some were placed through no fault of their own, but that they were abused, neglected or removed from home for their own safety and welfare. Some because they had unfortunately gone astray.

I was involved for 4 years and I can say I enjoyed every minute. It is a wonderful and beneficial experience........

BTW...very nice new interview!! You deserve the recognition!

Great H.O.W.-hub, Pamela! Many children would need someone to look up to and learn from. This seems like a very good idea. I don't know if we have anything similar here in Finland...

What a simply simple way to connect, impact a life, and do something positive for the world - all at the same time..

i'm in limbo right now - half in canada, half in the states, but when i'm fully settled - this is something i will consider! it's clean, close, effective, inexpensive...it's not just sending money - it's...shaping a life for the better..

mmmmmmm...H.O.W. perfect..

Made, This works really well from everything I have been told. Of course, I don't know about Finland. Thanks so much for your comments.

ImKarn, Yes, this is different. It is an investment of time and probably emotions if your develop a relationship with the child. I think that is probably the most rewarding part. Thank you for your comments.
