Internet Safety: Protecting your Children Online

When it comes to safety on the internet, unfortunately children are the most vicitimised today. Many unfortunate children have fallen prey to hackers, pedophiles, identity thieves and scammers who prowl the internet.

As a parent you have to understand that children are excited about the use of the internet and may even know how to use it more than you do. You may not always be able to monitor what your child is up to online, but you can be ahead of them and take practical steps to protect them while on the internet.

Keeping your child safe online

There are many ways to ensure your childs safety online, but these are just a few safety tips you can use

1.a. Password protect your computer - This may sound like hard work, especially when you have to type in your password every time you use the system. But it also means that every time your child wants to use the system, he or she has to pass through you first to gain your permission. b. Create user accounts on your computer - Your children's user account should be different from yours. You can password it to restrict what they view on their own account. Make sure your password to sensitive documents are kept away from them, this will prevent them from disclosing or sharing it with others.

2. Keep the computer in an open space - A small reading table in the living area or dining area will do. Any other family member can easily see what someone else is doing on the computer. Decide when they go online. It is safer for you to sit with your child while on the internet so you can guide him/her to make safe choices. (Remember NEVER leave them unattended at the system). Monitor their conversations with friends online and teach them internet etiquettes while bookmarking safe sites that will be beneficial to them.

3. Block their access to sites you do not want them visiting at all - There are many different types of websites that can be potentially harmful to children. Agree with your child what kinds of sites they are allowed to visit and block access to the others like pornographic sites, gambling sites. You can investigate what kind of software tools can be used to block access to certain websites.

4. Educate your children on the dangers of the internet - Nothing can ever replace a valuable lesson you teach your child. Teach them never to give out personal information no matter what the circumstance.

a. Explain to them why it is important to take precaution at all times. And make them understand that not all information they get on the internet is true, anyone can lie to them to lure them into danger.

b. 1 out of 3 kids have been contacted by strangers online. Do not allow your child to speak to strangers or arrange to meet face to face with a stranger. They do not yet have the skills or experience required to handle inappropriate conversations or chat.

Internet safety- lesson for young children

Most importantly, effective and open communication is key to their online safety. Know their friends, know their emails and passwords (this will not go down well with them). If you suspect anything like someone stalking your child or exploiting your child sexually, contact the law enforcement agency.

Everyone needs to have internet security on their computer whether its for your children or for your own use. Computer security threats are on the increase and if you want to keep your computer safe from all the threats when on the Internet, you could install a software program that will block each individual threat. Keep your children safe.

Great advice. We have Safe Eyes & really like it. Not only can you control what sites your kids visit, you can also control the amount of time and the times they are on it. We can easily spend too much time on "good" sites even - which can be as bad as visiting bad sites.

@cupid51, sorry for responding late. I agree they are intelligent but we always have to be a step ahead.

@anne. The more you visit the so called good sites, the more you explore to more dangerous zones. The internet is both a curse and a blessing, we just need to educate children on the ills and how they can use the internet for more beneficial stuff. Thanks for stopping by
