Lack of Respect in Today's Society

Lack of Respect in Today’s Society

Lack of respect in today’s society can be traced back to the way this generation and the last generation has been raised by their parents. Not all parents are neglectful in their parenting skills but the few that are have created this demographic of disrespect. The parents are not the only ones to blame but they are on the front line of discipline and respect. Our social mediums are to blame as well with these so-called rearing experts who have their own TV shows and write books on this subject. Some of these if we look at their childhood years probably have had a disciplinarian as a parent and this is their way of revenge against their childhood.

Most of the blame rests on the parents themselves. A majority of today’s parents advocate their responsibilities as parents onto either daycares or the overstressed school systems. What has been the result of this type of parenting is alarming and violent. Lack of respect for parents and authority figures have seen a rise in bulling, suicide, violent acts within the school environment and a rise of crime under the age of twenty-one. With the lack of respect young adults are sponging off their parents more rather than being responsible for their own lives.

Respect begins at home with the parents both teaching it and leading by example of it. Our children are gifts from God, shouldn’t we be treating them like the treasures they are instead of throwing them away like we do with other possessions. The return of honor and respect within the home will change our society as a whole. Look back a few generations when respect and honor were front and center in the home. This country was great then. Now look at where we are today. I cry for the youth because they might not be strong enough to change what parents failed to do and I cry for the parents who have the knowledge to make it right but choose to turn their back on their children.

We have lost the respect toward our heavenly father how can our children learn respect from you!

I also think it's a generational thing. I would NEVER have spoken back to my Father. My Mother? Well, yeah, we did until she uttered the ominous words: "Wait 'til your Father gets home." Then we quit whatever it was we were doing.

My parents were of the "Greatest Generation" although they hated that phrase. We were taught manners, i.e. I got a knife handle rapping my funny bone if my elbows were on the table. Kids today (I know what I sound like) haven't had the opportunity to learn because their parents don't know how to do things properly. I do think that's no excuse but how long has it been since a young person opened a door for you or tipped his hat?

Even "please" and "thank you" seem to have gone by the boards.

My parents NEVER hit us, yet we knew better. (We're 54 & 53.)

I hit my son once. We were at the Erie County Fair with my Mother who, at the time, was about 75 and walked slowly with a little walker. He made a snarky remark about having to wait for Grandma to his friend whom we brought with us. Without a moment's hesitation I backhanded him.

Not hard but I was mortified that I'd done that. My Mother was pleased.

We were taught manners by our parents. The kids today don't have a clue and it will hinder their chance for advancement the rest of their lives. Thankfully, my son says "yes, Sir," "yes, Ma'am," etc. and holds the door. Rare in a 22 year old, I think.

Today's parents do not teach their kids the importance of manners, since bible studies has been taken out of schools the kids has lost respect for themselves and others
