My Greatest Accomplishment - My Children
My greatest accomplishment would have to be my children. Many people bemoan the fact that when life is finally over, they would have nothing to show for it. They often compare themselves to the Olympians, the prolific writers who sold millions or those who hold high offices. The Issac Newton's or the Picassos of the world can sometimes make us feel like our small, uneventful life is worth little.
It always surprises me that many of the people who think that they have made little or no contribution to life are parents with children who anyone would be proud to call their own. I may not climb mount everest, but childbirth sure felt like I did. I have not carried the burden of a nation on my shoulder, but I carried and nurtured an emerging human life for 39 weeks on 3 different occasions.
I have not run any marathons yet but I have labored for thirty six hours bringing a human being into this world and I have the scars to show for it. So when I look at myself in the mirror and I feel that my body is not the same as that of a super model's, I look at my children and I wear every crease, scar or wrinkle with pride.
Yes, I have had other accomplishments. I have done things, and gone places, survived much and constantly challenge myself. I care about the downtrodden, the poor, the prosecuted and the maligned and my volunteer work is extensive. But I see these acts as merely rites of passages or something that anyone else would do.
What do I have to be proud of? What have I accomplished? My children. One has my dimples, one has my smile, and the other has my stubborn streak. They share many of my passions, for art, politics, cultures and the environment.
